Cyclooxygenase-2 expression in epithelial neoplasms and its relevance as a targeted therapy in dogs Ciência Rural
Cunha,Rúbia Monteiro de Castro; Horta,Rodrigo dos Santos; Lavalle,Gleidice Eunice; Araújo,Roberto Baracat.
ABSTRACT: Targeted therapy of neoplasms is an emergent approach in human and veterinary medicine. Cyclooxygenase (COX) is a class of catalytic enzymes related to the formation of inflammatory mediators. COX-2 is expressed constitutively in a few body tissues, but it may be induced in specific pathophysiologic conditions, such as cancer. COX-2 expression in neoplams may be considered a potential predictive factor, due to the possible association of selective COX-2 inhibitors in adjuvant treatments. This scientific communication has the objective to report COX-2 expression in seven neoplasms of dogs and the usage of adjuvant treatment with COX-2 selective inhibitors as an effective and feasible option in cancer treatment.

Carcinoid of the gallbladder in two dogs Ciência Rural
Argenta,Fernando Froner; Pereira,Paula Reis; Bertolini,Marianna; Fratini,Letícia Mendes; Saccaro,Renata de Oliveira; Sonne,Luciana; Driemeier,David; Pavarini,Saulo Petinatti.
ABSTRACT: A carcinoid is a rare neoplasm derived from neuroendocrine cells that may arise in the hepatobiliary system. This report described two cases of carcinoid of the gallbladder in dogs, with emphasis on the clinical, pathological and immunohistochemical aspects. Case 1 was a 10-year-old female Shih Tzu, with a history of prostration and occasional episodes of diarrhea and vomiting. Case 2 was a 10-year-old male Cocker Spaniel, with a history of diarrhea and abdominal pain. Abdominal ultrasonography suggested a neoplasm of the gallbladder in both cases. The dogs underwent cholecystectomy, and 10% formalin-fixed samples were sent for pathological examination. Histologically, a neoplastic proliferation of neuroendocrine cells was observed in the...

Histopathological findings and detection of parasites in the eyes of dogs infected naturally with Leishmania chagasi Ciência Rural
Brito,Fábio Luiz da Cunha; Laus,José Luiz; Tafuri,Wagner Luiz; Figueiredo,Maria Marta; Silva Júnior,Valdemiro Amaro; Maia,Frederico Celso Lyra; Alves,Leucio Câmara.
The objective of the present study was to investigate the histopathological alterations and detection of parasites that occur in the eyes of dogs naturally infected with Leishmania chagasi. The eyes of 25 dogs with a positive parasitological and serological exam for L. chagasi were submitted to routine ophthalmic examination. Fragments were obtained from the eyeball and were analyzed by immunohistochemistry and histopathology. Among the structures studied, the conjunctiva of the third eyelid was the tissue most frequently stained for L. chagasi. Histopathological analysis revealed a predominantly mononuclear inflammatory infiltrate whose intensity ranged from discrete to intense in the various ocular structures. Vascular congestion and perivasculitis were...

Annona crassiflora Mart. fruit pulp effects on biochemical parameters and rat colon carcinogenesis Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Venâncio,Vinícius Paula; Ferreira,Eric Batista; Brigagão,Maísa Ribeiro Pereira Lima; Paula,Fernanda Borges de Araújo; Barbisan,Luis Fernando; Azevedo,Luciana.
A. crassiflora Mart. a Brazilian savannah fruit, is a source of phytochemical compounds that possess a wide array of biological activities, including free radical scavenging. This native fruit proved to potentialize the mutagenic process in previous in vivo investigations. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of A. crassiflora Mart. pulp intake on colonic cell proliferation and on the development of Aberrant Crypt Foci (ACF) in male Wistar rats. The animals were fed with either a commercial diet or a diet supplemented with A. crassiflora Mart. pulp mixed in 1%, 10% or 20% (w/w) for 4 weeks or 20 weeks. The carcinogen 1,2-dimethylhydrazine dihydrochloride (4 doses, 40 mg kg-1 each) was used to induce colonic ACF. After euthanasia, the...
