THE ROLE OF ASYMMETRIC PRICE TRANSMISSION AND STRUCTURAL BREAKS IN THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN COSTA RICAN MARKETS OF LIVESTOCK CATTLE, BEEF AND MILK AgEcon
Hernandez-Villafuerte, Karla Vanessa.
The research analyzes the price transmission among the Costa Rican markets of cattle, beef and milk, accounting for asymmetric behavior and structural breaks. Monthly price data covering the first month of 1998 to the fourth month of 2008 were used. Price transmission between each market pair was found. The Price adjustment is consistent at 1% of significant with the behaviour expected. Cattle prices adjust in the milk - cattle relationship, beef meat prices adjust in the cattle - beef meat relation and in the milk - beef meat relation. This finding supports the statement regarding the leading position of “Dos Pinos” as the main player in the market. The results of the asymmetric analysis are not as expected. The coefficients of both adjustments (positive...

EU Policy-Making: Reform of the CAP and EU Trade in Beef & Dairy with Developing Countries AgEcon
Halderman, Michael; Nelson, Michael Byron.
The present study is part of the PPLPI effort to identify significant political and institutional factors and processes that currently hinder or prevent the poor in developing countries from taking greater advantage of opportunities to benefit from livestock. The study examines the political economy of policy-making concerning trade in livestock and livestock products (LLPs) between the European Union (EU) and developing countries (DCs). The main objective is to determine and assess how relevant EU policy is made, including the role of key actors and forces both domestic and international. The political economy of relevant LLP trade-related issues are examined at four levels: (a) the EU member state, (b) the European Union itself, (c) the international...

Understanding the Market for Holstein Steers. AgEcon
Burdine, Kenneth H.; Meyer, A. Lee; Maynard, Leigh J..
A semi-structured interview process was combined with an econometric analysis to document the newly changed structure of the Holstein sector, to evaluate existing quality perceptions, and to assess the impact that recent changes in production practices have had on prices of Holstein steers. Results suggest that finished Holstein steer prices are driven by many of the same market factors as native steers, overturning some common quality misconceptions.

U.S. MARKET POTENTIAL FOR DRIED DISTILLERS GRAIN WITH SOLUBLES AgEcon
Dooley, Frank J..
Prior research presumes that the U.S. livestock feed demand for dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) can accommodate the rapid growth in DDGS production. The objective of this work is to reexamine the market potential for DDGS by considering factors that limit the adoption rate of DDGS. An estimate of DDGS market size requires information about DDGS inclusion rates, animal populations, and adoption rates. The rapid expansion of the ethanol industry will saturate the dairy and hog markets for DDGS by the end of 2009, while the beef and poultry use must triple to consume all available product. One must be circumspect of these forecasts for three reasons. First, the supply of DDGS is contingent on ethanol production. If the downturn in ethanol...

Poverty, Livestock and Household Typologies in Nepal AgEcon
Maltsoglou, Irini; Taniguchi, Kiyoshi.
Agriculture and livestock are key components of the livelihoods of the poor. Livestock make a substantial contribution to household livelihood's’ and currently sustain the livelihoods of an estimated 700 million rural poor in developing countries. In Nepal, poverty levels are extremely high and more than 80% of the population relies on the agriculture sector for employment and income generation. In this context, it is important to be able to understand the link between poverty and livestock and the possible impact of livestock policies on the poor. The aim of the analysis presented in this paper is twofold: firstly, to gain an in-depth understanding of the features that characterize the poor in Nepal so as to determine the role livestock plays in and for...

Cost Efficiency and Scope Economies of Crop and Livestock Farms in Missouri AgEcon
Wu, Shunxiang; Prato, Anthony A..
This study investigates productive efficiency for a sample of Missouri crop-only (specialized) and integrated crop-livestock (diversified) farms using a cost frontier approach. Results suggest that significant cost inefficiency exists among sample farms. Lower cost efficiency in both types of farms was attributed to improper scale of operations and mis-allocation of inputs. On average, diversified farms were as technically and scale efficient as specialized farms. Lower allocative efficiency diluted gains in technical efficiency and resulted in greater cost inefficiency for diversified farms than for specialized farms. Technical efficiency was independent of farm size, whereas allocative, scale, and scope efficiencies were not.

The Political Economy of Pro-Poor Livestock Policy-making in Ethiopia AgEcon
Halderman, Michael.
This paper presents a case study of how livestock policies are made and implemented in a national context, and how they can be improved to better serve the interests of the poor. Livestock are extremely important in Ethiopia and could play a key role in pro-poor development strategy. Livestock are estimated to contribute to the livelihoods of 60-70% of the Ethiopian population. There have been several negative livestock-related trends over the past 20-30 years, however, including a decline in: national and per capita production of livestock products, official livestock and livestock product exports and earnings from exports, and per capita consumption of food from livestock origin. The study used the key informant method supplemented with official...

The Economic Impacts of a Foot-And-Mouth Disease Outbreak: A Regional Analysis AgEcon
Pendell, Dustin L.; Leatherman, John C.; Schroeder, Ted C.; Alward, Gregory S..
Contagious animal diseases like foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) are often referred to as economic diseases because of the magnitude of economic harm they can cause to producers and to local communities. This study demonstrates the local economic impact of a FMD outbreak in southwest Kansas. The expected economic impact of the disease hinges heavily on where the incidence of the disease occurs. Disease surveillance, management strategies, mitigation investment, and overall diligence clearly need to be much greater in concentrated cattle feeding and processing areas at large feeding operations in the region.

The Politics of Livestock Sector Policy and the Rural Poor in Bolivia AgEcon
Fairfield, Tasha.
This paper presents a case study of how livestock policies are made and implemented in a national context, and how they can be improved to better serve the interests of the poor. It seems that good opportunities for improving rural livelihoods in Bolivia through livestock policy are to be found in the camelid sector. Markets for camelid meat, fiber, and leather are currently small but hold significant potential to benefit poor herders in the Andean highlands. The study used the key informant method supplemented with official documents, newspaper sources and recently published research on the livestock sector. Interviews helped reveal policymaker's’ concerns, whereas field trips allowed the researcher to talk to a few peasants and learn their perspectives...

Carbon Markets and Methane Digesters: Potential Implications for the Dairy Sector AgEcon
Key, Nigel D.; Sneeringer, Stacy E..
Anaerobic digesters that capture and burn manure methane can provide a renewable source of energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Paying producers for these emission reductions—either directly or through a carbon offset market—could substantially increase digester adoption. However, there is likely to be wide variation in the scale, location, and characteristics of adopters, so these policies could have long run structural implications for the livestock sector. Using a model of digester profits and data from a nationally-representative survey of dairy operations we estimate the likely distribution of digester adoption and profits under different carbon price scenarios.

The Sustainability of Intensive Livestock Areas (ILAS): Network System and Conflict Potential from the Perspective of Animal Farmers AgEcon
Otten, Dennis; van den Weghe, Herman F.A..
The present study has determined the perceived consequences of an ILA on the production conditions of livestock farming systems based on the advantages of an agglomerated agri-food industry and the disadvantages of an increasing livestock concentration. It became obvious that the benefits of such ILAs can be understood according to their human and social capital. These elements, however, are both associated with a low geographic responsiveness to any increase in problems and so cause land use conflicts to increase. Their perception of the effects of being located within an ILA caused the livestock farmers in this survey to consider their production conditions more when formulating their demands with respect to policies concerning regional development and...

GANADERIA EJIDAL Y EMIGRACION EN EL MUNICIPIO DE SAN LUIS DEL CORDERO, DURANGO, NORTE DE MÉXICO AgEcon
Orona Castillo, Ignacio; Estrada Avalos, Juan; Rangel Ramirez, Gerardo; Espinoza Arellano, Jose de Jesus; Vazquez Vazquez, Cirilo; Salazar Sosa, Enrique.
Extensive ejidal cattle in northern México has developed due adequate water soil and climate conditions; nevertheless, in the past few years a natural resources harm has been observed as well as a trend of emigration of the population. The methodology utilized in this paper was supported in a pool to ejidal cattle producers of the San Luis del Cordero County in the state of Durango, by means of stratified random sampling based on the number of cows. Results have shown that producers owning less than 20 cows depend mostly on remittances from emigrants. This group of producers also are less organized and with less technology for the agricultural and cattle activities. This study presents a characterization of the ejidal cattle production system identifying...

LIVING WITH HOGS IN IOWA: THE IMPACT OF LIVESTOCK FACILITIES ON RURAL RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY VALUES AgEcon
Secchi, Silvia; Herriges, Joseph A.; Babcock, Bruce A..
To better understand the magnitude of the effects of livestock feeding operations on residential property values, we constructed a new dataset that merges data on home sales with data on the location and size of livestock feeding operations in five rural counties of Iowa. We estimated a hedonic model to explain variations in residential sales price with standard house attributes, such as number of bedrooms and square feet of living space, as well as the effects of distance and density of livestock feeding operation. We find that livestock operations have an overall statistically significant effect on property values. Predicted negative effects are largest for properties that are downwind and close to livestock operations. In addition, feeding operations...

A FŐBB SZÁNTÓFÖLDI NÖVÉNYEK TERMELÉSE ÉS AZ ÁLLATÁLLOMÁNY ALAKULÁSÁNAK KILÁTÁSAI AgEcon
Hegedus-Baranyai, Nora.
A vizsgálatok a múltbeli tendencia folytatásaként a búza, a kukorica vetésterületének csökkenését, illetve a napraforgó növekedését vetítik előre.

Economic Growth and Transition in Vietnam and China and its Consequences for their Agricultural Sectors: Policy and Agricultural Adjustment Issues AgEcon
Tisdell, Clement A..
Secondary data are used to discuss and compare the consequences for agriculture of economic growth and transition in Vietnam and China. It is found that China and Vietnam have experienced similar adjustments in their agricultural sectors and face at this time, similar agricultural policy problems. China began its economic reforms in 1979 and Vietnam followed in 1986. Since then both countries have experienced rapid economic growth, falling poverty rates and significant rises in per capita income. At the same time, substantial restructuring of their economies has occurred, a feature of which has been a decline in the relative contribution of agriculture to total employment and output. These changes are outlined. Significant changes have also occurred within...

LONG-TERM PLANNING OF A LIVESTOCK-CROP FARM UNDER GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS AgEcon
Kouka, Pierre-Justin; Duffy, Patricia A.; Taylor, C. Robert.
Optimal crop and livestock mix was determined for a representative Alabama farm using a dynamic programming model. Results indicate that decisions concerning livestock production are highly influenced by the amount of cotton base available on the farm. In most cases, increasing cotton base results in less cattle production. The triple base provisions of the 1990 Farm Bill, however, may give some cotton farmers an incentive to produce more stocker cattle during the winter months. Research results also indicate that the availability of farm programs can alter the optimal enterprise mix on a farm with no beginning base in cotton.

Effects of Environmental Regulation and Urban Encroachment on California’s Dairy Structure AgEcon
Sneeringer, Stacy E..
Environmental regulatory compliance costs are often cited as a factor in dairy location decisions, but few studies estimate the impacts of regulation in this sector. This article uses California dairy regulations to examine the pollution haven hypothesis in agriculture. Dairy industry regulation has varied regionally within the state, with the more strictly regulated Southern California region losing production and the more environmentally lenient Central Valley gaining production. Results show that even after controlling for population density and property values, regulation had significant negative effects on dairying in Southern California.
