Estimating farmed shellfish stocks is essential, in terms of both developing shellfish farms and evaluating trophic capacities with respect to existing stocks. At Marennes-Oléron, estimation is carried out every five years, following a multi-layered strategy. First, cluster sampling of areas of 1 ha provided an estimate of biomass per surface area as well as characteristics of oyster farms (age, type of collectors used, etc.). These data were then interpolated to the stratum level. Second, the overall exploitation rate of the stratum was estimated based on coverage by aerial photographs. Following the development of net protection techniques (1980), Japanese clam Ruditapes philippinarum farms develop in the ponds of Charente-Maritime. The county production for 1984 is about 100 tonnes, for a turnover of 4.5 Million Francs. To this day, farmers cultivating clams in ponds over a full cycle get better growth results during the first year. The size of 24 mm is obtained with a density of 200 individuals per square metre. However, due to the type of water input in ponds and to the limited primary production developing in the latter, it appears that biomasses in farms during the second year should not be greater than 0.5 to 1 kg per m² (30 to 50 clams per m²). The growth of oysters (Crassostrea gigas) is modeled in order to study the trophic capacity of the Bay of Marennes Oléron. Total seston and amount of protids, lipids, and carbohydrates converted to energy are the environmental factors taken into account. Time series of these variables are derived during 2 yr with a daily time step from a linear regression including the tidal velocity, the height of the water column, and the wind velocity. A model of the energetic budget based on assimilation and respiration terms and depending on the previous time series is run to simulate the individual growth of an oyster. The Marennes-Oléron is a well known cupped oyster (Crassostrea gigas) and mussel (Mytilus edulis) reproduction area. Every year, a monitoring of the reproduction of these two species is carried out on behalf of the Regional Shellfish Culture Section of Marennes-Oléron. This monitoring aims to determine the periods of larval emission in order to let the professionals know about the best collection times This study presents the main results obtained in 1999 and compares them with those obtained in 1997 and 1998. The year 1999 showed good results as far as larval emission and development are concerned in both oysters and mussels. The comparison of the three consecutive years shows the disparity of larval evolutions. |

Les claires situées sur les deux rives de la Seudre, sur les côtes de Marennes, du Chapus et de l'Ile d'Oléron, sont des bassins creusés dans des terrains argileux. Elles sont alimentées en eau de mer par un système de chenaux et de ruissons, leurs affluents, pour un coefficient de marée en général égal ou supérieur à 70. Dans certaines claires, les ostréiculteurs déposent, au mois de Mai, des huîtres plates originaires de Bretagne ou d'Arcachon, âgées de trois ou quatre ans, à raison de 2, 3 et 4 huîtres par mètre carré. Dans ce milieu, sous quarante centimètres d'eau, elles vont pendant six ou sept mois, croître, engraisser et verdir. |

Cette étude a pour but d'introduire dans le modèle de production globale du bassin de Marennes-Oléron une nouvelle source de variabilité des teneurs de la colonne d'eau en éléments particulaires par la prise en compte des échanges verticaux à l'interface eau-sédiment.
