210Po and 210Pb trophic transfer within the phytoplankton–zooplankton–anchovy/sardine food web: a case study from the Gulf of Lion (NW Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Strady, Emilie; Harmelin-vivien, Mireille; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Veron, Alain; Tronczynski, Jacek; Radakovitch, Olivier.
The transfer of 210Po and 210Pb in the food web of small pelagic fishes (from phytoplankton and zooplankton to anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus and sardine Sardina pilchardus) is investigated in the Gulf of Lion (GoL). We present original data of 210Po and 210Pb activity concentrations, C and N stable isotope ratios, measured (i) from different size classes of phytoplankton and zooplankton during spring and winter in different environments of the GoL, and (ii) in two fish species. Significant spatial patterns based on 210Po, 210Pb activity concentrations and 210Po/210Pb ratios in the different plankton size classes are evidenced by hierarchical clustering, both in spring and winter. This variability, also observed for C and N stable isotopes ratios, is...

Fluctuations à long terme du thon rouge: validité, origines et conséquences ArchiMer
Ravier, Christelle.
Describe and gain understanding on fluctuations in animal population over time and space is a central goal of population ecology. This is also crucial to ensure the sustainable management of exploited resources, particularly those with complex population dynamics such as the bluefin tuna. The goal of this work is to collect bluefin tuna catches from the ancestral Mediterranean and Atlantic trap fisheries to (i) characterise long-term fluctuations in bluefin tuna population migrating in the Mediterranean, (ii) analyse their causes et (iii) assess their implications for fisheries management. The bluefin tuna main biological and ecological characteristics are first detailed. Then, the first part presents the trap fishery, and the process of collect and...

Density dependence in the spatial behaviour of anchovy and sardine across Mediterranean systems ArchiMer
Giannoulaki, Marianna; Petitgas, Pierre; Barra, Marco; Tugores, Pilar; Vasapollo, C.; Iglesias, M.; Leonori, Iole; De Felice, Andrea; Bonanno, A.; Basilone, G.; Mazzola, Salvatore; Bigot, Jean-louis; Machias, Athanassios; Pyrounaki, Maria M..
A spatial indicator—the spreading area index—is used to describe anchovy and sardine spatial distribution in relation to biomass variation and to look for ecosystem differences within the Mediterranean basin. Specifically, the variation in the spreading area index in relation to biomass was examined for different areas of the Mediterranean Sea (i.e. Aegean Sea, western Adriatic Sea, Strait of Sicily, Gulf of Lion, and Spanish Mediterranean waters). In order to capture the spatial variability of the population at different levels of fish density, acoustic survey data for the years of highest, lowest, and intermediate abundance were used. In a subsequent step standardized values of spreading area and biomass were estimated to allow comparisons. Results...

Toxin content of Ostreopsis cf. ovata depends on bloom phases, depth and macroalgal substrate in the NW Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Gémin, Marin-pierre; Réveillon, Damien; Hervé, Fabienne; Pavaux, Anne-sophie; Tharaud, Maxime; Séchet, Veronique; Bertrand, Samuel; Lemée, Rodolphe; Amzil, Zouher.
Over the last fifteen years, blooms of the genus Ostreopsis have been reported more frequently and at higher abundances in the Mediterranean area. Ostreopsis cf. ovata is known to produce ovatoxins (OVTXs), structural analogues of palytoxin, which is one of the most potent non-polymeric toxins. However, the production of OVTXs is poorly characterized in situ. The present study focuses on toxin content and profile according to the bloom phase during summer 2017 in Villefranche-sur-Mer, France (NW Mediterranean Sea), depth (from 0.5 to 5 m) and three different macroalgal substrates of this epiphytic dinoflagellate (Padina pavonica, Dictyota spp. and Halopteris scoparia). Ovatoxin quantification of all samples was performed by liquid chromatography coupled to...

Unusual Po-210/Pb-210 ratios in the surface water of the Gulf of Lions ArchiMer
Radakovitch, O; Cherry, Rd; Heyraud, M; Heussner, S.
Concentrations of Po-210 and Pb-210 have been measured in sea water collected in the Grand Rhone Canyon. Concentrations of Pb-210 are at similar levels to those found in other Mediterranean seawater samples, and are at the levels which would be expected in comparison with global sea water data. The same applies to the Po-210 concentrations in samples from below 100 m depth. Surface samples from above 100 m have Po-210 at levels rather higher than expected, and their Po-210/Pb-210 ratios are about 1 or more as compared with the usual open ocean ratio of about 0.5. These data can be interpreted as indicating another source of supply of Po-210 to the surface layer in addition to the normal atmospheric input. We suggest that an episodic advective particulate...

Determination of the copper isotope composition of seawater revisited: A case study from the Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Baconnais, Isabelle; Rouxel, Olivier; Dulaquais, Gabriel; Boye, Marie.
A new technique for the determination of dissolved copper isotope composition (δ65Cu) of seawater was applied to examine copper sources and internal cycling in the Mediterranean Sea. A succession of chelating resin with nitrilotriacetic acid functional groups and strong base anion exchange resin, together with optimization of the multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry set-up allowed to isolate copper from seawater matrix and to measure the 65Cu/63Cu ratios in seawater with an external precision of 0.06‰ (2 s.d.). This method was first applied for inter-comparison measurements to surface and deep waters sampled at station BATS in the North Atlantic Ocean. Disparities in δ65Cu reported here and in the literature over these samples...

Fourteen years after the first observation of Caulerpa taxifolia (Valh) C. Agardh in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea, this green alga of tropical origin is now present in five countries (Spain, France, Monaco, Italy and Croatia). By the end of 1997, more than 46 km(2), at depths of between 0 and 50 m, were found to be affected by this expansion. A standardization of the cartographic procedure is proposed here. Such a standardization is necessary to compare maps produced by various organizations from different countries. For a given independent station, it is based on the definition of three levels of colonization:Level I refers to a station where one or several colonies less than 100 m apart cover a total surface area inferior to 1000 m(2):Level II...

Some like it hot: Paracartia grani (Copepoda: Calanoida) arrival in the Thau lagoon (south of France—Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Boyer, Séverine; Arzul, Isabelle; Bonnet, Delphine.
Paracartia grani originates from high latitudes and has progressively been recorded in the Mediterranean Sea since the 1980s. In Thau lagoon, while Acartia clausi and Acartia discaudata present maximum peaks of abundance from January to April and in November and December, both species being perennial over the year, P. grani and Paracartia latisetosa appear in May, develop during summer, in July and August, and slowly decrease in autumn before disappearing from the water column in December. The Acartiidae populations have changed over the years at our monitoring station. Indeed, P. latisetosa was last recorded in August 1983 while P. grani appeared in the lagoon in 1998.

Coralligenous reefs state along anthropized coasts: Application and validation of the COARSE index, based on a rapid visual assessment (RVA) approach ArchiMer
Gatti, Giulia; Bianchi, C. N.; Morri, C.; Montefalcone, M.; Sartoretto, Stephane.
A rapid visual assessment (RVA) approach for the characterization and assessment of the integrity of coralligenous reefs was applied in 21 stations subjected to different levels of anthropogenic pressure, along the French Mediterranean coasts. The reefs were characterized from both the geomorphologic and bionomic (biotic cover, conspicuous species richness, canopy-forming species, etc.) points of view, and their health status was estimated through the COARSE (COralligenous Assessment by ReefScape Estimate) index. The sensitivity of the COARSE index and the robustness of the RVA approach to observer biases were analyzed. Results showed that most coralligenous reefs were characterized by (sub) vertical cliffs or platforms with variable slope, usually...

Active biomonitoring in Greek coastal waters: Application of the integrated biomarker response index in relation to contaminant levels in caged mussels ArchiMer
Tsangaris, Catherine; Hatzianestis, Ioannis; Catsiki, Vassiliki-angelique; Kormas, Konstantinos Ar; Strogyloudi, Evangelia; Neofitou, Christos; Andral, Bruno; Galgani, Francois.
An integrated approach using biomarkers and contaminant levels in mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis L was employed to assess chemical contamination in Greek coastal waters within the framework of the MYTIMED program. Biomarkers (metallothioneins, glutathione S-transferase, catalase, acetylcholinesterase and RNA:DNA ratio) have been previously described in mussels caged at 14 sites in coastal areas influenced by different types of anthropogenic activities. This study applied a biomarker index, the Integrated Biomarker Response (IBR) to summarize biomarker responses and relate stress levels to concentrations of organochlorine compounds (PCBs, DDTs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and metals (Cu, Ni, Fe, Zn) measured in the mussel tissues. The IBR...

Environmental and Benthic Community Patterns of the Shallow Hydrothermal Area of Secca Delle Fumose (Baia, Naples, Italy) ArchiMer
Donnarumma, Luigia; Appolloni, Luca; Chianese, Elena; Bruno, Renato; Baldrighi, Elisa; Guglielmo, Rosanna; Russo, Giovanni F.; Zeppilli, Daniela; Sandulli, Roberto.
The occurrence of hydrothermal vent ecosystems at Secca delle Fumose, Pozzuoli Bay (Gulf of Naples), represented an opportunity to study the benthic assemblages under the thermal stress of hydrothermal emissions in a very shallow environment (9–14 m water depth). In autumn 2016, the macrobenthic community was sampled by scuba divers at four sites located in the Baia Underwater Archeological Park. Two sites were characterized by vent emissions (one with white bacterial mat scattered on the bottom and one with a yellow substrate around a geyser opening) and two at about 100 m away, used as control. Sediment and interstitial water environmental variables were measured to determine their influence on the structure of macrobenthic assemblages. A total of 1,954...

Regionalisation aims at delimiting provinces within which physical conditions, chemical properties, and biological communities are reasonably homogeneous. This article proposes a synthesis of the many recent regionalisations of the open-sea regions of the Mediterranean Sea. The nine studies considered here defined regions based on different, and sometimes complementary, criteria: dynamics of surface chlorophyll concentration, ocean currents, three-dimensional hydrological and biogeochemical properties, or the distribution of organisms. Although they identified different numbers and patterns of homogeneous regions, their compilation in the epipelagic zone identifies nine consensus frontiers, eleven consensus regions with relatively homogeneous conditions,...

Annual variation in neustonic micro- and meso-plastic particles and zooplankton in the Bay of Calvi (Mediterranean–Corsica) ArchiMer
Collignon, Amandine; Hecq, Jean-henri; Galgani, Francois; Collard, France; Goffart, Anne.
The annual variation in neustonic plastic particles and zooplankton was studied in the Bay of Calvi (Corsica) between 30 August 2011 and 7 August 2012. Plastic particles were classified into three size classes, small microplastics (0.2–2 mm), large microplastics (2–5 mm) and mesoplastics (5–10 mm). 74% of the 38 samples contained plastic particles of varying composition: e.g. filaments, polystyrene, thin plastic films. An average concentration of 6.2 particles/100 m2 was observed. The highest abundance values (69 particles/100 m2) observed occurred during periods of low offshore wind conditions. These values rose in the same order of magnitude as in previous studies in the North Western Mediterranean. The relationships between the abundance values of the...

Diversité et activité des communautés microbiennes dans des sédiments marins associés aux émissions de fluides froids ArchiMer
Lazar, Cassandre Sara.
A large portion of the greenhouse gas methane on Earth is trapped in marine sediments. However, little methane actually reaches the hydrsphere and the atmosphere, because it is efficiently consumed by anaerobic methane-oxidizing Archaea (ANME). This methane is mainly biogenic in marine sédiments, and is produced by methanogenic Archaea. Methane ascends from deep sources to the seabed, in cold seep sites of continental margins. In order to study microbial community diversity in cold seeps, and to determine geochemical factors that control these microbial communities, we compared four geochemically and geologically distinct sites. In this work, molecular tools (PCR, RT-PCR, DGGE, cloning) as well as genetic markers (16S rRNA, mcrA, dsrB) were employed, to...

Flood inputs in a Mediterranean coastal zone impacted by a large urban area: Dynamic and fate of trace metals ArchiMer
Oursel, B.; Garnier, C.; Zebracki, Mathilde; Durrieu, G.; Pairaud, Ivane; Omanović, D.; Cossa, Daniel; Lucas, Yves.
Trace elements and organic carbon inputs to the Mediterranean sea from an urbanized area (Marseille city) were studied and characterized during flood events. Inputs were brought to the sea by two small coastal rivers whose waters were mixed together and also with treated wastewaters (TWW) just before discharge. The monitoring of the rivers during flood events showed the high temporal dynamics of water flow, suspended particulate matter (SPM), organic carbon and trace metals concentrations, typical of small coastal Mediterranean rivers and requiring an appropriate sampling strategy. Dissolved/particulate partition coefficient (log Kd) in rivers during floods remained quasi-constant for a given trace element, but differed from one element to another...

Assessment of contaminant concentrations in sediments, fish and mussels sampled from the North Atlantic and European regional seas within the ICON project ArchiMer
Robinson, Craig D.; Webster, Lynda; Martinez-gomez, Concepcion; Burgeot, Thierry; Gubbins, Matthew J.; Thain, John E.; Vethaak, A. Dick; Mcintosh, Alistair D.; Hylland, Ketil.
Understanding the status of contaminants in the marine environment is a requirement of European Union Directives and the Regional Seas Conventions, so that measures to reduce pollution can be identified and their efficacy assessed. The international ICON workshop (Hylland et al., in this issue) was developed in order to test an integrated approach to assessing both contaminant concentrations and their effects. This paper describes and assesses the concentrations of trace metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and polychlorinated biphenyls in sediments, mussels, and fish collected from estuarine, coastal and offshore waters from Iceland to the Mediterranean Sea. For organic contaminants, concentrations progressively increased from Iceland, to the...
