"Gill disease" of Portuguese Oysters ArchiMer

During April and May of this year, there has been a heavy mortality of Portuguese oysters, Crassostrea angulata LmK., which were imported into Britain from the River Tagus (Portugal) in March. Losses in some cases exceeded 90 per cent. The symptoms shown by the dyring oysters are the same as those seen in Britain and France in C. angulata in 1967 and 1968. Farley described the general symptoms in oysters (C. virginica Gmelin) dying of prolonged functional or infectious disease. These gross symtoms appear to be similar in the case of several different diseases including the present European mortality.

Characterization of 27 microsatellite loci in the European flat oyster Ostrea edulis ArchiMer

The flat oyster Ostrea edulis is native to Europe and populations have been severely depleted by the parasite Bonamia ostreae since the 1980s. Additional genetic markers are required to improve population genetics study and linkage map development for selection for B. ostrea-resistance in this species. Here, we characterized 27 novel microsatellite loci for O. edulis. Number of alleles per locus ranged from 6 to 25 and observed heterozygosity between 0.375 and 1. Null alleles were suggested at a few loci but most loci were in Hardy-Weinberg agreement enabling their reliable use in further population and mapping genetics approaches.

In situ estimations of uptake and release of material by oysters in the Bay of Marennes-Oléron (France) ArchiMer

The uptake and release of material by oysters (Crassostrea gigas) in the intertidal zone were estimated in situ in the Bay of Marennes-Oléron (France) in spring and autumn. 10 m long plexiglass tunnels were placed over small tables with bags containing oysters or empty oyster shells (control). Although in the very turbid conditions of the water column sedimentation of suspended particulate material could be observed in control experiments, higher fluxes (uptake) of seston, POC and PON and especially chlorophyll occurred in the presence of live animals. Sample-size calculation in the context of the surveys aimed at substantiating freedom from infection have been commonly undertaken an terrestrial animals over recent years, but not on aquatic animals. A recent model developed by Audigé and Beckett in 1999 can be used to plan and assess animal health surveys. The aim of this study was to adapt that model for marine aquaculture, in particular to help in planning surveys aimed at substantiating freedom form two exotic diseases, mikrocytosis and perkinsosis, in the French population of Crassostrea gigas. As a first approach, farmed animals are so frequent that it would be very difficult to be representative of a single area or zone. Using a satellite DNA family for species identification of commercial oysters ArchiMer

The cultivation of oyster presents some problems related with the identification and differentiation of species as Ostrea edulis (European flat oyster) with respect to Ostrea stentina (Provence oyster) or Crassostrea angulata (portuguese oyster). Crossostrea gigas (Pacific oyster). We have characterized a satellite DNA family and used it as a molecular marker for genetic differentiation between commercial and non-commercial oyster species present in Europe. This marker clearly supports a high degree of differentiation between O. edulis and O. stentina and conversely upholds the contention that C. gigas and C. angulata are the same species.

A long term study of bonamiosis in Quiberon bay, France ArchiMer

Bonamiosis was first reported in association with mass mortality of flat oysters, Ostrea edulis, in June 1979 in L'Ile Tudy, Brittany. The disease rapidly spread to all of the oyster farming areas in France but also in other European countries. The French flat oyster production, which already suffered from another protozoan disease, marteiliosis, decreased from 5500 mt in 1979 to less than 2000 mt after 1980. In 2001, about 350 French farms sell 1650 mt of flat oysters. This production mainly relies on natural spat collection which specially occurs in Quiberon bay. Among oysters, species of Crassostrea (Sacco, 1897) are the most attractive to aquaculture. In Brazil, the genus is represented by C. rhizophorae (Guilding, 1828) and C. brasiliana (Lamarck, 1819). Because the maturation and breeding technology is not well developed for these species, aquaculturists need a reliable method to decide the correct time to place spat collectors in the field, and to identify both species, which are morphologically similar. Maastrichtian and Danian species of Turkostreini (Ostreidae, Crassostreinae) from the Neuquén Basin, Argentina Ameghiniana

The record of Turkostrea damboreneae nom. nov. and Cubitostrea primordialis n. sp. in the Maastrichtian Jagüel and Roca Formations and of Turkostrea argentina n. sp., in the Danian beds of the Roca Formation reveals that the two genera involved have a history that reaches back into the Late Cretaceous in northern Patagonia. Turkostrea damboreneae nom. nov. and Cubitostrea primordialis n. sp. are the two oldest representatives of the genera in which they belong. The two species of Turkostrea show clear affinities with other species of this genus that thrived in the Paleogene of the Northern Hemisphere. Abundance and distribution of Lithophaga (Mytilidae) in extant and fossil oysters: taphonomic and paleobiological implications Ameghiniana

In this study we analyze the abundance and distribution patterns of Lithophaga patagonica in valves of Ostrea puelchana and compare them to those of Lithophaga sp. observed on the fossil species " Ostrea " patagonica and " Ostrea " alvarezii from the late Miocene Puerto Madryn Formation. No specimen of the fossil oysters showed borings of Lithophaga sp. on the interior surface of the valves. This suggests that they were produced while the oysters were still living and, at the same time, that the oyster beds were buried rapidly after death. In Ostrea puelchana the boring abundance was significantly higher for the left valve and, within it, the areas more heavily bored were the umbones and the platform. Treatment of shrimp effluent by sedimentation and oyster filtration using Crassostrea gigas and C. rhizophorae BABT

Efficiency in removing particulate matter from Litopenaeus vannamei shrimp culture effluent was assessed in laboratory scale employing sedimentation and oysters Crassostrea gigas and C. rhizophorae filtration processes. Cylindroconical tanks (100 L) were used in duplicate for sedimentation and 50-L in triplicate for oyster filtration. Fifteen oysters of each species weighing 76-80 g were stocked in each of the filtration treatment experimental units (biomass of 1065 - 1174 g oyster per unit). Oysters are filter feeders able to ingest particles in suspension that may carry pathogenic microorganisms. In this respect, the consumption of raw oysters can cause foodborne diseases in humans. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the microbiological quality of Crassostrea gigas oysters cultivated and commercialized in the coastal region of Florianópolis, SC, Brazil. Shellfish are readily contaminated with viruses present in water containing sewage due to the concentrating effect of filter feeding. Enteroviruses are generally used as a model for the detection of viruses from shellfish due to their public health significance. In the present work, oysters were placed in glass aquaria containing seawater plus unicellular algae.
