Legumes and herbs are able to contribute to productivity and biodiversity in forage production. Besides they are known for beneficial properties for nutritive value and animal health. In the present study the potential yield and forage quality of eight legumes, four herbs and perennial ryegrass were tested under growing conditions in northern Germany. Due to their ability to bind protein and affect ruminal fermentation in a favourable manner, concentration of condensed tannins (CT) and total phenols (TP) were measured. High variability of symbiotic nitrogen fixation in farming conditions Organic Eprints

Symbiotic nitrogen fixation (SNF) in perennial legume-grass leys is the primary source of N to organic farming systems in northern countries. This work aimed to quantify SNF in organically managed red clover (Trifolium pratense L.)-grass leys and to relate SNF to explanatory variables. The study was carried out on 27 farms located in the coastal regions of Finland and included 117 ley crops subjected to regular organic farming practices. SNF was calculated from clover herbage dry-matter yield with an empirical model. In the accumulated first and second cuts of one- and two-year-old red clover-grass leys, SNF averaged 185.4 kg N ha-1 yr-1 (SD ± 90.0 kg N ha-1 yr-1); fixation in the aftermath added 62.1 kg N ha-1 yr-1 (SD ± 49.8 kg N ha-1 yr-1). Forskere fra Det Jordbrugsvidenskabelige Fakultet, Aarhus Universitet, har set på, om man ved at bruge hjemmedyrkede grovfodermidler med et højt naturligt indhold a vitaminer og mineraler kan dække køernes behov for disse næringsstoffer i økologisk mælkeproduktion. Resultaterne er lovende og den nye viden kan bringe de økologiske køer et skridt nærmere den totalt hjemmedyrkede foderration.

In einem konzeptionellen Projektansatz, der sowohl Felderhebungen, Feldversuche, Gefäßversuche und Laboranalysen umfasste, wurde der Frage der Bedeutung der Bodenphosphor-Trophie für die Präsenz, die Entwicklung und die Leistungsfähigkeit von Grünlandleguminosen im Ökologischen Landbau nachgegangen. Ziel der Untersuchungen war es, die Bivalenz des Phosphors, der einerseits die Leguminosen und damit den N-Ertrag fördern kann und andererseits die Phytodiversität zu reduzieren vermag, näher zu ergründen. Objetivou-se avaliar o valor nutritivo do capim-elefante, quanto aos teores de PB e FDN e a digestibilidade in vitro da MS (DIVMS), submetido a algumas práticas agroecológicas. Foram usados dois piquetes (0,15 ha cada), onde foi estabelecido o capim-elefante, em 2001, com espaçamento entrelinhas de três metros. Nas entrelinhas, estabeleceram-se aveia (Avena strigosa Schreb.) e azevém (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) no período hibernal e, no estival, permitiu-se o desenvolvimento de espécies de crescimento espontâneo. Biologically fixed N2 as a source for the N2O production in a grass clover mixture, measured by 15N2 Organic Eprints

The contribution of biologically fixed dinitrogen (N2) to the nitrous oxide (N2O) production in grasslands is unknown. To assess the contribution of recently fixed N2 as a source of N2O and the transfer of fixed N from clover to companion grass, mixtures of white clover and perennial ryegrass were incubated for 14 days in a growth cabinet with a 15N2-enriched atmosphere (0.4 atom% excess). Immediately after labelling, half of the grass-clover pots were sampled for N2 fixation determination, whereas the remaining half were examined for emission of 15N labelled N2O for another eight days using a static chamber method. Preliminary evaluation of annually cultivated forage legumes for organic farming in Finland Organic Eprints

In 1998-2001 nineteen forage legume species (Lupinus, Medicago, Melilotus, Pisum, Trifolium and Vicia species) were evaluated at two sites of Eastern Finland (Mikkeli and Juva). Species were studied for their annual productivity in pure stands and in mixtures with cereals (barley and oats) and Italian ryegrass. Swards were cut either twice or once (whole grain silage stage of barley).

Red clover-grass leys were fertilized with cow manure or with chemical fertilizers. The yields were lower with organic fertilizers, but nevertheless the GHG emissions were lower per tonne of biomass in organic than in conventional conditions, even when the extra need for cultivation area to gain equal amounts of yield was considered. Results of a 4 year field experiment in Southern Finland.

Bælgplanter, herunder de forskellige kløverarter, kan ved knoldbakteriers hjælp (symbiose) optage luftens kvælstof (N2), og derved udnytte denne uudtømmelige kvælstofkilde. Processen er simpelt-hen forudsætningen for at kunne drive økologisk jordbrug, og det har derfor stor interesse at kende størrelsen af N-fikseringen og have kendskab til hvilke faktorer der har betydning for derved om muligt at kunne optimere produktiviteten og reducere eventuelle miljømæssige effekter af et givet dyrkningssystem.

Methoden zur Verbesserung der Vegetationszusammensetzung in ökologisch bewirtschaftetem Dauergrünland Organic Eprints

In der ökologischen Grünlandbewirtschaftung werden artenreiche Bestände mit Standort angepassten und möglichst wertvollen Futterarten angestrebt. Dennoch sind in der Praxis oftmals stark Weidelgras betonte Bestände anzutreffen. Im Vergleich zur Neuansaat sind Nachsaaten deutlich kostengünstiger. Daher wurden im Sommer 2007 auf 8 ökologisch bewirtschafteten Betrieben Nord-Westdeutschlands Nachsaatversuche mit unterschiedlicher Technik (Schlitzsaat und Bandfrässaat) und ausgewählten Arten angelegt. However, the scarce availability of organic feed for monogastric animals together with the lack of organic fertilizers are challenging the development of this sector. In this context, a Danish project called Organofinery is focusing on developing a green biorefinery platform for the production of organic protein-rich feed for monogastric animals, of biogas and of organic fertilizer. Amounts of rapidly rumen degradable protein in forage plants breed to a lower N-Use-Efficiency (NUE). Secondary plant metabolites, like tannins are able to protect forage protein against inefficient ruminal degradation. Feeding forage plants containing moderate concentrations of tannins may increase the sustainability in organic dairy production. Effects of cropping practice dynamics on permanent grassland vegetation during the conversion to organic farming Organic Eprints

The aim of this work was to identify the impact of farming practices on permanent grassland vegetation during the conversion from conventional to organic farming. We considered functional and species diversities in order to compare the different grassland categories based on the farming practices used over a period of six years - five years before conversion and one year after. We identified three categories of grasslands: those generally cut twice a year, those intensely grazed, and those that were used under diversified practices. Il s’agit d’évaluer l’impact environnemental (sur air et eau) des systèmes d’élevage de ruminants en agriculture biologique ( NH3, N2O, NO3 , CH4, CO2,). Le projet s’articule autour de deux approches, l’une très précise dans deux stations expérimentales biologiques, l’autre en fermes d’éleveurs biologiques ou de lycée agricole au système proche des systèmes d’élevage étudiés en station et que nous appelleront « fermes satellites ». Les calculs en stations expérimentales seront réalisés à partir de données journalières concernant l’alimentation des animaux, les productions, l’utilisation des parcelles par les animaux et toutes les pratiques de fertilisation et de récolte. Køer, der leverer økologisk mælk, skal i praksis fodres med 100% økologisk foder. Derfor spiller afgræsning en aktuel og vigtig rolle for fodringen. På Rugballegård ved Danmarks JordbrugsForskning undersøgte vi, om det er muligt at maksimere optagelsen under afgræsning ved at bruge et leder-følge system. Ved udbinding havde vi 12 folde, som i løbet af sæsonen blev udvidet til 18 folde efterhånden som væksten af kløvergræsset blev mindre. Malkekøerne græssede to døgn både dag og nat i hver fold, inden de blev flyttet til næste fold, dvs. systemet er et rationsgræsningsprincip. Det nye er, at kvierne sammen med goldkøerne fulgte efter. Symbiotische Stickstofffixierung in biologisch und konventionell bewirtschafteten Wiesen Organic Eprints

Because of lower nitrogen (N) input it is assumed that organically cultivated legumes fix more N2 than legumes grown under conventional cropping. Using the natural 15N abundance method, we assessed symbiotic N2 fixation by white and red clover. The clover was growing in a grass-clover meadow installed as part of the crop rotation of a long term (30 years) field experiment. Dry matter yields were similar for organic and conventional meadows on plots fertilized at levels typical for the respective system, but organic meadows tended to higher clover yields. Rapporten har til formål at belyse markedspotentialet for økologisk græsprotein til fodring af økologisk fjerkræ – fortrinsvis høner. Danmark er det centrale marked for rapporten, men der indgår også betragtninger om Sverige, Tyskland og Frankrig for at perspektivere analysen. Økologisk græsprotein er ikke et produkt, der reelt eksisterer i markedet i skrivende stund. Derfor er beregningerne baseret på en række antagelser, som det er anført i rapporten.
