A review of UK research and development for organic food and farming Organic Eprints
Anon,.
The objective of the project is to draw together information on current levels of funding for organic research throughout all UK public sector, private and charitable sources. A list of 268 potential organic food and farming research funders and contractors throughout the UK was drawn together and questionnaires were mailed to them in the week of 24th February 2003. With regular follow up of all recipients to achieve the best return rate possible a response rate of 41% was achieved. We asked for details on all projects that were ongoing in the period between Jan 2000 and March 2003. The survey identified 168 individual projects. The total cost of this research was £23,578,902 of which nearly £20M was solely from the public purse with 72 per cent of this...

Herausforderungen für den Wissenstransfer in der Schweiz Organic Eprints
Alfoeldi, Thomas; Weidmann, Gilles; Schmid, Otto; Niggli, Urs.

THE ORGANIC FOOD AND FARMING INNOVATION SYSTEM IN GERMANY: IS SPECIFIC LOBBYING JUSTIFIED? Organic Eprints
Braun, Charis; Häring, Anna Maria.
Organic agriculture offers solutions for various key problems currently faced by the agro-food sector. This includes challenges such as adapting to climate change or increasing food security. To cope with these, an effective innovation system is needed. The framework conditions for innovation in the organic agro-food sector, however, do not adequately reflect the potential that lies within it. This study’s goal is to identify starting points for improving how the interests of the organic agro-food innovation system are represented in Germany. In order to achieve this, the sector’s innovative ability and innovation requirements were analysed. Another focus was on the status quo of the research relating to the organic agro-food sector and the overall...

Fundamental understanding of cellulose dissolution can improve the efficiency of biomass processing Organic Eprints
Ghasemi, Mohammad; Tsianou, Marina; Alexandridis, Paschalis.
A major barrier to the efficient utilization of biomass is the recalcitrance to dissolution of crystalline cellulose. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the current understanding of the mechanism and kinetics of cellulose dissolution, with particular attention on how these findings can improve the efficiency of biomass processing. An improved fundamental understanding of cellulose dissolution can guide the rational selection of solvents and the optimization of processing conditions, thus leading to an enhanced utilization of biomass.

Niggli, Urs; Leifert, Carlo.
Abstract - Improving the quality and safety and re-duction in cost in the European organic and ‘low in-put’ food supply chains (QLIF) is an Integrated Pro-ject under the 6th Framework Programme of the Euro-pean Commission which started in March 2004. After a two year period of research activities of the 31 partners, first preliminary results are available and will be presented during this congress. In our intro-ductory paper we try to develop an overall view on how the many work packages will strengthen the system approach of organic and ‘low input’ agricul-ture.

This research report is about animal health in organic farming. It has been intended for providing recommendations for future research in order to optimize organic farming. An evaluative review and assessment of searchable publications, which cover the period from 1991 to 2011, national as well as international, has been conducted. A total of recorded 569 publications on animal health in livestock production were found. This included articles on general topics (42 publications), on cattle (211), on pigs (181), on poultry (100), on small ruminants (25) and on other species (10). There is a lack of research to examine a practical realisation (n = 124). In organic cattle farming the subject of mastitis has been edited very often. Problems such as lameness,...

Ileen Macpherson: Life and tragedy of a pioneer of biodynamic farming at Demeter Farm and a benefactor of Anthroposophy in Australia Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Edith Ileen Macpherson (1898-1984) was a co-founder of Australia’s original biodynamic Demeter Farm (c.1934-1954) along with her partner Ernesto Genoni (1885-1974). Ileen was a member of Rudolf Steiner’s Experimental Circle of Anthroposophic Farmers and Gardeners (from 1936). Ernesto was the first Australian member (from 1928). At their Demeter Farm in Dandenong, Victoria, they practiced biodynamic agriculture on over 40 acres (16 ha) through the years of the Great Depression, through World War II, and for the first decade of the post-war years, producing milk, fruit, and vegetables. Ileen was an early Australian Anthroposophist and follower of Rudolf Steiner. It was a blow to their Demeter Farm enterprise when she fell ill. Eventually she was no longer...

Hoischen-Taubner, Susanne; Bielecke, Alexandra; Sundrum, Albert.

A row cropping system with cover crops for balancing weed and soil fertility management in organic cereal production Organic Eprints
Phan, Hong TT; Thorup-Kristensen, Kristian.
This manuscript shows the result from testing the new row cropping system for its ability to produce a balanced combination of inter-row hoeing and undersown cover crop in order to obtain a sufficient N supply and an effective weed control as well as to identify optimal sowing time for high biomass production and cover crop species suited for late undersowing. The new system produced a sufficient N supply and an acceptable weed control effect, leading to an improvement in the subsequent crop yield. Yield in this system is potentially improved further because some managements are suggested to increase its weed control effect, especially for the perennial creeping thistle cirsium arvense.
