Magen-Darm Parasiten – Unterscheiden sich Schweizer Schafrassen bezüglich ihrer Anfälligkeit? Organic Eprints
Heckendorn, Felix.

Vegetation-type effects on performance and meat quality of growing Engadine and Valaisian Black Nose sheep grazing alpine pastures Organic Eprints
Willems, H.; Kreuzer, M.; Leiber, F..
Lambs of two Swiss mountain breeds, Engadine Sheep (ES; n=55) and Valaisian Black Nose Sheep (VS; n=55), were fattened in 2010 and 2011 on one lowland and three alpine pastures. Groups of six to seven lambs per breed were allocated to pastures of a size allowing ad libitum intake on the following four vegetation types: (i) species-poor and nutrient-rich lowland (400 m a.s.l.) ryegrass–clover ley on flat terrain (‘lowland-rich’); (ii) alpine, species-rich and nutrient-rich vegetation type on a flat terrain (1950 m; ‘alpine-rich’); (iii) alpine, species-rich vegetation type, moderate in nutrients on steep terrain (2150 m; ‘alpine-moderate’); and (iv) alpine, species-rich and nutrient-poor vegetation type on steep terrain (2150 m; ‘alpine-poor’). Lambs were...

Organic beef and sheep production (OF0147) Organic Eprints
Keatinge, Ray.
This is the final report from Defra project OF0147 To study the potential of organic farming in the hills and uplands, a comparison of organic and conventional production systems at similar stocking rates was made at ADAS Redesdale. This was supported by additional assessments in two further organic flocks, managed at reduced stocking rates, and by data collection on 10 commercial organic farms. Data were provided on physical and financial performance, animal health and welfare, and changes in botanical composition. Specific studies were done to quantify the potential of novel crops for parasite control, the performance of treated and untreated animal manures, and the requirement for trace element supplementation in organic hill stock. The attached...

Organic Eprints
Santos, Fernanda Carlini Cunha; Vogel, Fernanda Silveira Flores; Monteiro, Silvia Gonzales.

In vitro effects of three woody plant and sainfoin extracts on two parasitic stage of 3 parasitic nematode species Organic Eprints
V., PAOLINI; I., FOURASTE; H., HOSTE.
Most studies on the effects of tanniferous plants on nematodes have examined forages but have neglected the woody plants. Therefore, in vitro effects of extracts from 3 woody plants (Rubus fructicosus, Quercus robur, Corylus avellana) have been tested on trichostrongyles and compared to sainfoin, a legume forage. Because some in vivo results indicated that the effects of tannins differed depending on the parasitic species and/or stages, the effects were measured on third-stage larvae (L3) and adult worms of Teladorsagia circumcincta, Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis. The effects of plant extracts varied according to the plant sources, the parasite species and stages. For the woody plants, significant inhibitory effects were obtained...

Økologisk sauehald - kort innføring. Organic Eprints

Distribution of infection with gastro-intestinal nematodes in different groups of dairy goats in Switzerland and its influence on milk production Organic Eprints
Grohmann, Markus; Winckler, Christoph; Perler, Erika; Isensee, Anne; Christ, Benedikt; Amsler, Zivile; Werne, Steffen; Maurer, Veronika; Heckendorn, Felix.
The aim of this field study was to investigate interactions between gastro-intestinal nematode (GIN) infection, milk performance and age in goats in order to identify animal groups with higher susceptibility to GIN. On 3 farms (farm A: n = 29, farm B: n = 33, farm C: n = 117 milking goats) fecal egg count reduction tests (FECRT) were performed in summer. All 179 milking goats were enrolled in FECRT and individual milk performance was recorded before and after FEC for FECRT. Furthermore, in early summer and autumn bulk fecal samples were cultured for every farm and GIN genera were determined.

Interactions between nutrition and gastrointestinal infections with parasitic nematodes in goats Organic Eprints
H., Hoste; J.F., Torres-Acosta; V., Paolini; A., Aguilar-Caballero; E., Etter; Y., Lefrileux; C., Chartier; C., Broqua.
Parasitic nematodes of the digestive tract remain one of the main constraints to goat production both in temperate and tropical countries. The usual mode of control of these gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) based on the repeated use of anthelmintics is now strongly questioned because of the increasing development of resistance to these molecules. Among the alternative methods to anthelmintics currently available, the manipulation of host nutrition in order to improve the host resistance and/or resilience to parasitic infections seems to represent one of the most promising options to reduce the dependence on conventional chemotherapy and to favour the sustainable control of gastro intestinal nematode infections. This paper will review the available...

Esparsette (Onobrychis viciifolia) als mögliche Futterpflanze zur Kontrolle von Magen-Darm-Strongyliden bei Schafen Organic Eprints
Heckendorn, F.; Maurer, V.; Senn, M.; Hertzberg, H..

Organic Farming at ADAS PwllPeiran 1993 - 2001 Organic Eprints
Frost, David.
Agriculture at Pwllpeiran has a long history. Pwllpeiran was eventually established as an Experimental Husbandry Farm in 1955. During the following forty years, work at the farm achieved substantial improvements in the quality and quantity of lamb and beef produced, but by the turn of the millennium the emphasis of agricultural policy was turning away from increased livestock production per se and towards the development of environmentally sensitive farming systems. The 1,118 ha Pwllpeiran Research Farm is now managed by ADAS Wales. The land is rented from the National Assembly for Wales and the Forestry Commission. All of the land is under a ‘whole farm’ Environmentally Sensitive Area agreement. The results from the Pwllpeiran unit underline the...

Organic and low intensive, traditional sheep farming in the Polish Carpathian Mts Organic Eprints
Twardy, Dr. Stanislaw; Kuzniar, Dr. Antoni.
The Polish Carpathians Mts. occupy about 19.6 thousands km2, which constitute over 6 % of the area of the country. The length of this mountain chain within Poland 's territory is 330 km and width is 60-80 km. In described agricultural land the permanent grasslands dominate. At lower elevation, i.e. about 600-650 m a.s.l. they are moved, and the above this elevation land is utilised as a pasture. In whole area the low input agriculture is practised, usually as sub-sistence farming, i.e. feeding the farmer and his fam-ily. Possible surpluses of food are sold in the local markets or directly to the tourists and holidaymakers, who are rather numerously visiting this glamorous mountain region. The described specific agriculture is favouring the organic...

Künstliche Besamung von Ziegen Organic Eprints
Koopmann, Regine; Fischer, Peter.
