The number of organic farmers in Scotland increased dramatically in the period between 1997 and 2000, from 120 in 1997 to approximately 600 at the end of 2000; a five fold increase. Currently the outlook for organic farming in Scotland appears positive, despite recent publicity about farmers leaving the sector. Market prospects for all organic commodities are buoyant and there are increased Scottish Executive Organic Aid Scheme (OAS) maintenance payments in the offing. But what do Scotland’s organic producers really think about the system, which has them, tied in for at least five years? In June 2004, a representative group of Scottish organic farmers in the South of Scotland was surveyed to determine how many intended to continue farming organically once... |

Veterinarians could be the expected sparring partners of organic dairy farmers in promoting animal health which is one of the main organic principles. However, in the past organic dairy farmers did not always consider veterinarians to be pertinent advisors for them. The objectives of this study are – from private veterinary practitioners’ point of views- i) to describe the roles of veterinarians today in organic dairy farmers’ animal health promotion strategies, ii) to identify factors related to organic farming which determine their role on organic dairy farms, and, iii) to identify opportunities for improvement of veterinarians’ advisory services for organic dairy herds. Fourteen veterinarians, providing herd health advisory services to dairy farmers,... |

Discursive dynamics have played an important role in determining the development of the organic farming sector in Flanders (the northern part of Belgium). These dynamics co-shaped political and institutional changes including the implementation of EU regulations and the deployment of supply-and market-driven measures. Moreover, discursive dynamics mediated the effects of these political-institutional changes on the willingness of agricultural stakeholders –including individual farmers– to contribute to a growth of the organic agricultural sector. Our results suggest that a focus on institutional changes or individual farmers’ willingness to convert may be useful but only partially explains organic agricultural developments. |

Organic farming certification has certainly contributed to unifying organic production, particularly by reducing the number of private charters. However, this reduction should not be misleading. Organic agriculture cannot be reduced to just a label and includes other requirements related to ethics, agronomy and economic policy whose implementation contributes to the diversification of marketing organisations that selectively ensure the marketing of organic products. Furthermore, in the case of viticulture, organic producers have recently placed more emphasis on the taste quality of their wines that they have linked in various ways to the quality of the environment. This new link between taste and environment has added a new complexity to marketing... |

Organic farming in the UK provides a range of economic and social benefi ts. In particular, it provides 32% more jobs per farm than equivalent non-organic farms. These new findings are based on the fi rst national survey of employment on UK organic farms, carried out by the University of Essex for the Soil Association. Organic farming is helping to reverse the decline in the UK’s agricultural workforce, which has fallen by 80% in the last 50 years. In contrast to the ageing overall farming population, organic farmers are, on average, seven years younger than their non-organic counterparts. Organic farmers are also three times more likely to be engaged in business innovations activities, such as direct marketing and on-farm processing. If all UK farmers... |

The Danish organic farmers’ strategy of strategic cooperation with actors of the conventional food production chains is widely seen as a success story, not least in terms of volume and efficiency. On the other hand it has been claimed that this strategy would easily lead to a dissolution of the network forces that produce and reproduce the ideas and values of organic farming and thereby the forces that are developing the organic farming practice. The objective of this paper is to re-examine the surveys among the Danish organic farmers, conducted by Michelsen and his colleagues to examine whether the process we are witnessing is a process of enhancement or dissolution of ‘Organic farming’. Michelsen finds a minor difference in attitudes toward organic and... |

The social problem of food insecurity and the challenge for farmers on adapting successfully to climate change in West African societies build the framework and scope of our research for development. It is addressed through a project called Syprobio and operating in the three countries of Mali, Burkina Faso and Benin. Elected farmers, representing 2 – 3,000 organic farmers are conducting on-farm research and cooperating with 40 – 50 researchers and technicians in testing 27 innovative practices by forming innovation platforms. Soil fertility, seed improvement, pest management, agronomy and socio-economics are the main themes. The innovations to be tested shall improve food security and climate change adaptation. The main research for development methods... |

This paper discusses how the consumption of organic food can be understood as a form of hybrid communication. By describing the consumption of organic food as a form of hybridity the paper shows how different codes such as health, aesthetics and morality can be reproduced by re-entering the economic code. This process of hybridizations allows the communication to handle more complexity than had it only been coded economically. But on the other hand the hybridization also creates an increased amount of social complexity. The paper argues that in order to better understand how consumption functions systems theory provides an analytical perspective that is well attuned into the entanglement of the different logics. |
