The French anchovy fishery ArchiMer
Duhamel, Erwan; Biseau, Alain; Masse, Jacques; Villalobos, Hector.
The french fishery of anchovy is divided in two groups defined by gears : purse seine and pelagic trawl. The average length of these vessels is about 20m. This fleet is very opportunistic : all trawlers are using several trawls during the year, to catch sometimes bass, tuna, hake, or scampi, and purse seine are mainly fishing sardine. Each year, the main anchovy catches are provided by pair trawlers. Purse seiners operate often in coastal areas (<10 nautical miles); trawlers may operate until 50 nautical miles offshore but are banned inside the three miles coastal zone. The pair trawlers may operate from Basque country to western Channel according to fish availability. Purse seiners usually stay around their home harbour.

La flotte de pêche commerciale bretonne ArchiMer
Talidec, Catherine; Berthou, Patrick; Jezequel, Michele; Lespagnol, Patrick.
The annual activity calendars of the 2,000 Breton fishing boats registered in the national POP file (with the exception of seafaring ships: 35 ocean-going tuna boats and 2 ships from Saint-Malo) were reconstituted for the year 1994 through surveys of the owners of these ships. Resorting to this method was necessary to overcome the weak statistical coverage of coastal fishing activity that is practiced within the 12 miles of territorial waters. This collection of information made it possible to build a database that contains, for each boat, the various trades practiced during the year 1994 and, if applicable, the periods of inactivity. By "trade", we mean the putting to use of a fishing vessel in order to catch one or several target species, in a given...

Evolution du peuplement halieutique de la baie de Vilaine au cours des décennies 1980 et 1990 ArchiMer
Desaunay, Yves; Guerault, Daniel.
A beam trawl survey of the Bay of Vilaine was conducted from 1981 to 1997. Changes in the commercial fish community were analyzed by comparing the characteristics at the year and decadal scales. The community structure and nursery function of the Bay were steady during the period. However, specific richness, assiduity and distribution indices demonstrated a reduction in the second decade. The global abundance fell from 105.8 ind.ha-1 to 31.3 ind.ha-1. This trend was less marked for the external more marine stratum, which exhibited the lowest densities. The results are discussed in terms of ecological meaning of such a community, compared with the overall demersal fish community. The reasons of the decrease are questioned regarding nursery habitat, local...

Sequential process to choose efficient sampling design based on partial prior information data and simulations ArchiMer
Kermorvant, Claire; Coube, Sébastien; D’amico, Frank; Bru, Noëlle; Caill-milly, Nathalie.
Issues on sampling procedure definition led numerous study results to be biased and object of controversy. Choosing relevant sampling design and number of samples is a difficult task when wanted to set up or optimize a survey. The survey design choice is very important to avoid bias and increase the survey cost-efficiency. It can have a strong effect on the sample size needed to achieve some targeted accuracy on results. And on the final cost of the procedure. The sequential process we expose here melt design based and model based sampling theories. Its objectives is helping practitioners defining a sampling design and a number of samples for their survey when inference to the whole population is wanted. The main idea is to mathematically reconstruct the...

Trophic level-based indicators to track fishing impacts across marine ecosystems ArchiMer
Shannon, Lynne; Coll, Marta; Bundy, Alida; Gascuel, Didier; Heymans, Johanna J;; Kleisner, Kristin; Lynam, Christopher; Piroddi, Chiara; Tam, Jorge; Travers-trolet, Morgane; Shin, Yunne.
Trophic level (TL)-based indicators have been widely used to examine fishing impacts in aquatic ecosystems and the induced biodiversity changes. However, much debate has ensued regarding discrepancies and challenges arising from the use of landings data from commercial fisheries to calculate TL indicators. Subsequent studies have started to examine survey-based and model-based indicators. In this paper, we undertake an extensive evaluation of a variety of TL indicators across 9 well-studied marine ecosystems by making use of model- as well as surveyand catch-based TL indicators. Using detailed regional information and data on fishing history, fishing intensity, and environmental conditions, we evaluate how well TL indicators are capturing fishing effects...

An improved bait method for collecting hymenoptera, especially social wasps (Vespidae: Polistinae) Neotropical Entomology
Noll,Fernando B; Gomes,Bruno.
In this work, an alternative method for the capture of neotropical social wasps is described, which may supplement or replace the procedures commonly used in wasp surveys. The method was tested in a seasonal semideciduous forest in the northwest of São Paulo State, collecting a larger number of species and a greater abundance of social wasps and of other Hymenoptera than other methods also used in the same area, namely Malaise traps, bottle traps and meat baits. The proposed method was adapted from Wille (1962) who used an attractive solution based on water and honey for bee attraction. In here, the attractive solution was based on water, salt and crystal sugar, and was effective in attracting bees and solitary wasps, but mainly social wasps, which is the...

Insecticide resistance in populations of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), from the state of Pernambuco, Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Santos,VC; Siqueira,HAA de; Silva,JE da; Farias,MJDC de.
The diamondback moth Plutella xylostella (L.) has a great economic importance in Brassicaceae crops in many parts of the world. Recurrent infestations of this pest in growing areas of Pernambuco state, Brazil, have led farmers to frequently spray their crops with insecticides. However, control failures by several insecticides have been alleged by farmers. The objective of this study was to check whether resistance to insecticides could explain these control failures in P. xylostella. Populations of P. xylostella from Pernambuco were collected between January and April 2009. The resistance ratios of P. xylostella populations were compared among five different active ingredients: abamectin, methomyl, lufenuron, indoxacarb, and diafenthiuron by leaf dipping...

First standardized inventory of ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in the natural grasslands of Paraná: New records for Southern Brazil Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Franco,Weslly; Feitosa,Rodrigo Machado.
Abstract Despite the large number of studies investigating ant diversity in Brazilian biomes, no ant-related studies have been carried out in Campos Gerais, a grassland physiognomy in Paraná state. The present study is the first inventory of the ant fauna in one of the few conservation units protecting the Campos Gerais landscape, the Guartelá State Park (PEG). Sixty samples were collected from different habitats within PEG using pitfall traps. Qualitative samples of leaf litter were collected from forest fragments and submitted to Winkler extractors. In addition, manual qualitative sampling was carried out in the various physiognomies within the PEG. A total of 163 species was collected and sorted into 43 genera and nine subfamilies. Five genera and 28...

Surveying neotropical social wasps: an evaluation of methods in the "Ferreira Penna" research station (ECFPn), in Caxiuanã, PA, Brazil (Hym., Vespidae, Polistinae) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Silveira,Orlando Tobias.
A survey of social wasps was made in the area of the "Ferreira Penna" Research Station (ECFPn) in Caxiuanã, PA, Brazil. Traditional collecting methods as the use of Malaise traps and the search for individuals and colonies of wasps along trails in the forest and by river margins, were applied in a more systematized fashion. Seventy-nine species belonging to 18 genera were discovered within a discontinuous period of 52 days of collecting. Angiopolybia pallens, Polybia liliacea, and several Agelaia species were the most frequently collected species. Active search for wasps in the forest and by river margins was far more efficient than Malaise traps regarding the discovery of polistine species.
