Rural Wealth Creation Concepts, Strategies, and Measures AgEcon
Pender, John L.; Marre, Alexander W.; Reeder, Richard J..
This report presents a conceptual framework for rural wealth creation, drawing upon the U.S. and international development literature. The framework emphasizes the importance of multiple types of assets (physical, fi nancial, human, intellectual, natural, social, political, and cultural capital) and the economic, institutional, and policy context in which rural wealth strategies are devised. The report discusses the role of wealth creation in the rural development process, how wealth can be created in rural communities, and how its accumulation and effects can be measured.

A AMAZONIA E O MERCADO DE CARBONO AgEcon

The Roles of the Environment and Natural Resources in Economic Growth Analysis AgEcon
Toman, Michael.
The primary aim of this paper is pedagogical. We first present and discuss a "wiring diagram" framework in order to elucidate the general links between economic growth and "natural capital." After developing the general framework, we develop parallel frameworks applicable to several specific sectors of the economy (agriculture, forestry, and manufacturing). Two appendices provide a mathematical formulation of the economy-wide framework and a brief historical review of the role of natural resources and the environment in economic growth theory.

Managing Forests for Sustainable Economic Development: Optimal Use and Conservation of Forests AgEcon
Tisdell, Clement A..
The conservation of natural forests contributes significantly to the goal of achieving sustainable economic development. There is, however, growing concern that natural forests (which provide tangible and intangible economic benefits to humankind) are being lost at a rate which (combined with other factors) seriously threatens sustainable economic development because of the environmental and social impacts of such loss. There is little doubt that in order to achieve sustainable development, multifunctional forest ecosystems (as well as other important ecosystems) need to be managed appropriately. However, determining the socially optimal level of conservation and use of forests is a challenging task. From a human point of view, it is clearly not optimal to...

Mature Cooperative Groups Seeking New Identities: The Case of Belgium AgEcon
Develtere, Patrick; Raymaekers, Peter.
The cooperative sector in Belgium has always been very much linked to other social movements. In the 1990s the backbone of the sector, namely the cooperative banks, have undergone major transformations. In this article, the two most important cooperative financial holdings that were created to replace the stand-alone cooperative banks are looked at: the Cera and the ARCO-group. We see that they follow a similar path but have opted for a slightly different positioning in the Belgian social and economic landscape. Both have sought a new identity by repositioning themselves vis-à-vis the market, civil society and the state. The consequences of the new “cooperative trilemma” are gradually becoming clear.

Sustainable Agriculture: An Update AgEcon
Tisdell, Clement A..
Provides some background on concerns about the sustainability of agriculture, outlines and discusses views about what constitutes sustainable agriculture and contrasts the sustainability of modern industrialised agriculture with that of traditional agriculture. Then the question is considered (taking into account the available evidence) whether organic agriculture is more sustainable than non-organic agriculture. Barriers to switching from non-organic to organic agriculture are mentioned. The development of agriculture usually has a serious negative impact on wild biodiversity. Whether or not more intensive agriculture would reduce the negative ecological footprint is unclear but many scientists believe it will do this. Globally, there has been a rapid...

Goodbye to projects? The institutional impact of sustainable livelihoods approaches on development interventions AgEcon
Franks, Tom; Toner, Anna; Goldman, Ian; Howlett, David; Kamuzora, Faustin; Muhumuza, Fred; Tamasane, Tsiliso.
The research goodbye to projects grew out of the increasing interest in sustainable livelihoods approaches (SLA) and growing disillusion with projects as mechanisms for addressing the development needs of the poor. Its aim was to investigate the implication of the adoption of SLA on the management of development interventions and in particular of the future of development projects. The underlying research questions were: a) How are elements of the sustainable livelihoods principles being applied in practice b) What are the problems and challenges for managing livelihoods-oriented development interventions? c) What is the future for development projects, given the increase in direct budget and sectoral assistance?

Conservation Value AgEcon
Tisdell, Clement A..
This paper outlines the significance of the concept of conservation value and discusses ways in which it is determined paying attention to views stemming from utilitarian ethics and from deontological ethics. The importance of user costs in relation to economic decisions about the conservation and use of natural resources is emphasised. Particular attention is given to competing views about the importance of conserving natural resources in order to achieve economic sustainability. This then lends to a discussion of the value of conserving natural resources in order to meet the moral obligations of present generations to future generations. Anthropogenic views of the value of conserving natural resources (for example, derived from utilitarian ethics) are...

Sustainable Decision-making: The State of the Art from an Economics Perspective AgEcon
Toman, Michael.
Government, corporate and other decision makers are more and more often being urged to 'act sustainably' and to pursue policy paths toward 'sustainable development.' However, application of these concepts is hampered by serious interdisciplinary disagreements about the interactions of humans with their environment. Moreover, reducing disagreements about sustainability cannot be achieved solely through an improvement in scientific knowledge. These observations lead me to express skepticism about the capacity of any more or less mechanistic rule, economic, scientific or otherwise, to provide definitive and reliable answers about sustainable policies or conduct. However, there are processes and procedures that can help guide decision-making. I underscore the...

Sustainable development ability of grain production in Sichuan Province AgEcon
Guo, Hong; Zou, Yi-xing; Xiong, Guang.
We set up the evaluation index system of the sustainable development ability of grain production on the basis of the overall analysis of grain production trend in Sichuan Province. And then we evaluate the sustainable development ability of grain production from 1990 to 2006 in Sichuan Province by adopting the method of principal component analysis. Result shows that the sustainable development ability of grain production has improved steadily, but there are some hidden troubles such as frequently changes of grain yield and gradually decrease of total farmland. Cluster analysis method is used to study on the sustainable development ability of grain production of 21 cities of Sichuan Province in the year 2006. result shows that grain production levels in...

Enjoying a Good Port with a Clear Conscience: Geographic Indicators, Rent Seeking and Development AgEcon
Kerr, William A..
The European Union is attempting to have the protection of geographic indicators strengthened in the WTO. There may be sufficient rents and other benefits available to justify this strategy in the negotiations. To achieve its rent-seeking goals, however, the European Union needs allies at the negotiations. It has been courting developing countries by touting the benefits of geographic indicators for their products. For most products originating in developing countries, the opportunities for rents will first have to be created, a resource-intensive and problematic activity. Further, even if rents can be created in the short run, the forces of competition are likely to erode them. Scarce resources might be better utilized on other development strategies that...

Conceptual development in the theory of externalities have opened up several policy options for their internalization including payment towards environmental services. Hence as externalities are social costs, accountability is crucial in increasing environmental awareness and for collective action through education and extension more so in developing countries. Here a modest attempt has been made to estimate externalities in water, forests and environment with field data from peninsular India to reflect on the economic perception of externalities by farmers and users of environment for the consideration of policy makers to devise institutions for payment towards environmental services. Dynamic Change of Ecological Footprint in Xingtai City in the Years 2003-2009 AgEcon
Chen, Ji-bing; Li, Yu-ping.
Quantitative estimation of the ecological footprint in Xingtai City in the years 2003-2009 is carried out by using the Ecological Footprint Model and the Time Series. Result shows that the per capita ecological footprint demand increases in Xingtai City from the year 2003 to 2009; and land use for energy shows a significant increase, accounting for the maximum proportion in per capita ecological footprint demand. Per capita ecological footprint supply gradually decreases. Ecological supply provided by cultivated land occupies the greatest proportion in the supply of per capita ecological carrying capacity, which is the main factor determining the supply of ecological carrying capacity in Xingtai City. In the years 2003-2009, ecological footprint of Xingtai...

MULTIFUNCTIONALITY OF AGRICULTURE, PUBLIC POLICIES AND SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCES: SOME CRITICAL ISSUES OF CONTEMPORARY CONTROVERSIES AgEcon
Laurent, Catherine E.; Berriet-Solliec, Marielle; Kirsch, Marc; Labarthe, Pierre; Trouve, Aurelie.
Various theoretical models of public policy analysis are used to treat situations of decision-making in which public deciders have to take into account the multifunctionality of agriculture. For some, science-society relations are not really problematical. Others acknowledge the current attempts of these policy-makers to find adequate scientific knowledge, and the difficulties they encounter. These difficulties stem partly from the very content of knowledge produced by research. Could other modes of production be more efficient? The status of the knowledge produced by these approaches is a subject of debate. Bridging the divide between science and policy more effectively is not only a question of knowledge brokerage. Accessibility and reliability of the...

Land property, tenure security and credit access: a historical perspective of change processes in China AgEcon
Jia, Xiangping; Piotrowski, Stephan.
The North China Plain is the country's granary: most of wheat and maize is supplied by this region in the northeast of China. Intensity of agricultural production has risen sharply in the last decades and the negative environmental effects like water scarcity, salinization and nitrate contamination have been widely acknowledged. In the wake of the country's rapid economic development it becomes at the same time more and more urgent to narrow the gap between the well-being of the urban and rural population. In order to better understand the paths that lead to this present dilemma, this paper provides a historical overview of the development of the land and water markets and the rural financial system. It highlights the linkages and reciprocal restraints...

A fenntarthatóság mérése az erdőgazdaságban AgEcon
Somogyi, Zoltan.

Ellis, Frank; Biggs, Stephen.
This article provides a brief overview of the major switches in rural development thinking that have occurred over the past halfcentury or so. Dominant and subsidiary themes are identified, as well as the co-existence of different narratives running in parallel. The continuing success of the long-running small-farm efficiency paradigm is highlighted. The article concludes by asking whether sustainable livelihoods approaches can be interpreted as provided a new or different way forward for rural development in the future. The answer is a cautious yes since these approaches potentially permit the cross-sectoral and multi-occupational character of contemporary rural livelihoods in low-income countries to be placed in centre-stage in efforts to reduce rural...

Environmentalism in tourism: the connection of lifestyle, tourism and sustainable development AgEcon
David, Lorant; Szucs, Csaba.
In Adler’s theory the “style of life” refers to how we live, sort out difficulties, and manage our own personal relationships. He strongly believed that each one of us is a distinctive, unique individual with our own characteristic way of life. Since the term was coined in the early 20th century it is no wonder that the meaning of “lifestyle” has gone through enormous changes. These days it is more often used to express “a way of life or style of living that reflects the attitudes and values of a person or group”. Since globalisation is increasingly turning the world into a “global village” no wonder that lifestyle is changing faster than ever before. As a result “for tourism, this influences the tourist’s perception of his/her personal needs and behaviour...
