Seed reserve composition and mobilization during germination and initial seedling development of Euphorbia heterophylla Rev. Bras. Fisiol. Veg.
SUDA,CECILIA N.K.; GIORGINI,JARBAS F..
Seed composition and reserve mobilization were investigated in wild poinsettia (Euphorbia heterophylla L.). Lipids, around 60% of seed dry mass, are the major reserve. Proteins, including albumins (49%), salt insoluble globulins (30%), salt-soluble globulins (21%) and prolamins (0.3%), comprise about a quarter of seed dry mass. Soluble sugars comprise about 3.6% of seed dry mass, sucrose being the predominant sugar. Starch was not detected in the endosperm of E. heterophylla. Lipid depletion starts after initial imbibition, and is completed between 72 and 96 hours. Protein fractions exhibit different degradation patterns, salt-soluble globulins being continuously degraded after the start of imbibition whereas salt insoluble fractions are degraded between...

Velásquez Ballesteros,Oscar Julián; Murillo Perea,Elizabeth; Jairo Méndez,John; Murillo Arango,Walter; Noreña,Diana Alexandra.
Introduction: Sida cordifolia L. (Malvaceae) is a weed about which not much is known in Colombia. This plant is used in folk medicine to treat oral mucosa, blennorrhea, asthma and bronchitis. In Brazil it finds application as an anti-inflammatory,while in Colombia its "baba" is used for treating hair loss, constipation and internal fever, among other ailments. Objectives: to quantify the saponoside content and evaluate its antioxidant and antifungal functionality. Methods: we prepared organic, aqueous and hydroalcoholic extracts from the aerial section of the plant. The saponoside material was quantified by the DNS and p-anisaldehyde methods. The most concentrated extracts were selected for antioxidant and antifungal assays. Results: it was found that Sida...

Soil seed banks Scientia Agricola
Christoffoleti,P.J.; Caetano,R.S.X..
The goal of this literature review is to discuss some of the major aspects of the soil seed bank, from its characteristics down to methodological aspects of its determination. Soil seed bank is the reservoir of viable seeds or of vegetative propagules that are present in the soil and that are able to recompose a natural vegetation. In the agroecossystems the soil seed bank is related to weeds, and the knowledge of its size and composition in terms of species can be used in the prediction of future infestations, to built simulation models of population establishment through time and also the definition of soil and cultural management programs, in order to have a rational use of herbicides.

Competition effects with mixed stands of wheat and kochia (Kochia scoparia) biotypes resistant and susceptible to acetolactase synthase inhibitor herbicides Scientia Agricola
Christoffoleti,P.J.; Westra,P..
Greenhouse experiments were conducted to compare the competitive ability of sulfonylurea resistant and susceptible kochia (Kochia scoparia L. Schard) compared to wheat. The results of several replacement series experiments indicate that wheat was the dominant competitor, and an average of one wheat plant reduced resistant kochia yield per plant equal to the effect of 4.8 resistant kochia or 5.4 susceptible kochia plants. Intraspeciflc competition was more important than interspecific competition for wheat, whereas the reverse was true for the resistant and susceptible kochia. The results of the niche differentiation index (NDI) indicate that wheat and either resistant or susceptible kochia are only partly limited by the same resources. The resistant and...

Brachiaria decumbens supresses the initial growth of Coffea arabica Scientia Agricola
Dias,Guilherme Faus da Silva; Alves,Pedro Luís da Costa Aguiar; Dias,Tomás Carneiro de Souza.
Brachiaria decumbens is becoming one the most common weeds growing in young coffee orchards because, besides its fast growth and difficulty of control, new coffee orchards are usually established in pasture areas. In order to verify the effect of B. decumbens plant density on the early growth of coffee (Coffea arabica L. cv. Catuaí Amarelo), a competition experiment was conducted under semi-controlled humidity conditions. Soil collected in a Typic Haplustox was placed in 70 L asbestos cement boxes and one coffee seedling was planted in each box. The B. decumbens seedlings were transplanted to the boxes at the 2-4 leaf stage. Treatments consisted of 0, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 36, 48, and 60 weeds m-2. The experimental period started 120 days after...

Determination of Merremia cissoids leaf area using the linear measures of the leaflets - doi: 10.4025/actasciagron.v33i3.6379 Agronomy
Carvalho, Leonardo Bianco; FCAV-UNESP; Bianco, Silvano; FCAV-UNESP; Galati, Valéria Cury; UNESP; Panosso, Alan Rodrigo; FCAV-UNESP.
Knowledge of the weed leaf area may give support to study the interference relationships between weeds and crops. The objective of this research was to determine a mathematical equation for M. cissoides leaf area estimation based on the relationship between the leaf blade linear measures. Leaves of the species were collected from a variety of agroecosystems at São Paulo State University, Jaboticabal, São Paulo State, Brazil, measuring the length (L), maximum width (W) and real leaf blade area of the three kinds of leaflets. Linear equations Y = a x (X) were estimated for each kind of leaflet. The confidence intervals of the primary leaflet equation overlapped those ones from the secondary leaflet equation, and then only one equation was considered for...

Digitaria species are sugar cane crop weeds in Brazil and are being controlled with herbicides, although there are some reports of control failure, notably to the triazine group. Molecular techniques are recommended to analyze the genetic variability in weeds. RAPD (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA), PCR-RFLP (Polymerase Chain Reaction – Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism) and, in combination with sequencing, allow the localization of resistance genes, as well as possible mutations related to the onset of resistant individuals in some species. Thus, the objective of this work was to characterize ten accessions of Digitaria spp. by RAPD and PCR-RFLP markers, to sequence a conserved region of the psb A gene and evaluate the accessions response to...

Fresh matter production by two forms of Oxalis latifolia as influenced by soil and climate Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Royo-Esnal,Aritz; López,María Luisa.
Oxalis latifolia is a widely distributed weed that mainly affects corn fields, orchards, plant nurseries and gardens. Two forms of the weed have been identified: the common form, with fish-tailed leaflets, bulbils growing on stolons and dark pink flowers, and the Cornwall form, with rounder leaflets, sessile bulbils and whitish-pale pink flowers. In this study, the fresh matter production, expressed as the increase of the bulbs' fresh weight, of both forms was compared during two growing seasons in two locations. The bulbs were grown in pots from spring to autumn, and different aspects of growth were measured at the end of each season. The total fresh matter production, weight of the apical bulb, total weight of the lateral bulbs and number of lateral...
