Abscess secondary to facial snakebite J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
QUIROGA,M.; AVILA-AGÜERO,M. L.; FAINGEZICHT,I..
In Costa Rica, approximately 700 snakebite cases occur each year, 5 to 10 of which result in death. At the Hospital Nacional de Niños (HNN), 6 to 10 cases are reported annually, more than half of these cases and nearly all deaths are result from Bothrops asper snakebite. This venomous snake, popularly known as the "terciopelo", most often attacks the lower or upper limbs and characteristically produces local tissue damage, which can be severe. The following is a report of the first case of a non-fatal and unusual facial bite caused by Bothrops asper in our country.

PEREIRA,P.C.M.; BARRAVIERA,B.; BURINI,R.C.; SOARES,A.M.V.C.; BERTANI,M.A..
Honey, royal jelly, propolis, materials produced and/or gathered by Apis mellifera honeybees have been used as food and medication for centuries(6,7,8). Although extensively used, honeybee products have become a matter of interest and controversy for years. Honey, well known as healthy and natural food, has shown therapeutic properties in the treatment of digestive, respiratory, cardiac and rheumatic disorders, among others(4). Several studies have reported honey's immunological, antibacterial, antiinflammatory, antipyretic properties besides its importance in terms of energy intake(3,5). Furthermore, honey has proved to possesses wound healing and analgesic actions(1,2). Honey and propolis are also known to be effective in the treatment of respiratory...

On frogs, toxins and true friendship: an atypical case report J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Daniel-Ribeiro,Cláudio Tadeu; Roussilhon,Christian.
Abstract The authors report a series of events including the scientific interest for poisonous dendrobates of French Guiana, the human confrontation with the immensity of the evergreen rainforest, the fragility of the best-prepared individuals to a rough life, and the unique and very special manifestation of a solid friendship between two experts and enthusiasts of outdoor life. In the evergreen forest of South America, as in many other scientific field expeditions, everything may suddenly go wrong, and nothing can prepare researchers to accidents that may occur in a succession of uncontrollable errors once the first mistake is done. This is what happened during an expedition in search for dendrobates by an experienced forest guide and naturalist. The...

Central retinal artery occlusion: an unusual complication of snakebite J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Bhalla,A.; Jain,A. P.; Banait,S.; Jajoo,U. N.; Kalantri,S.P..
Snakebites are endemic in some parts of India, being associated with a number of complications. Ocular disturbances are rare, except for injury to the cornea or conjunctiva when the eye is directly exposed to the venom. In this work, we present a case of central retinal artery occlusion caused by snakebite.

Mycobacterium marinum infection: a case report J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Sette,Christiane Salgado; Wachholz,Patrick Alexander; Masuda,Paula Yoshiko; Figueira,Renata Borges Fortes da Costa; Mattar,Fernanda Rodrigues de Oliveira; Ura,Deise Godoy.
AbstractThe infection by Mycobacterium marinum in humans is relatively uncommon. When it occurs, it mainly affects the skin, usually with a chronic, indolent and benign evolution. The diagnosis requires a high index of suspicion, and a significant delay may be observed between the first symptoms to the final diagnosis. This present case reports a M. marinum infection in an immunocompetent patient that had a chronic undiagnosed injury on the dominant hand for at least five years. The patient had several medical consultations, without proper suspicion, hampering adequate diagnostic investigation. Histopathology detected tuberculoid granulomas, but showed no acid-fast bacilli. The culture in appropriate medium and the polymerase chain reaction-restriction...

Deinagkistrodon acutus envenomation: a report of three cases J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Cheng,Chin-Lung; Mao,Yan-Chiao; Liu,Po-Yu; Chiang,Liao-Chun; Liao,Shu-Chen; Yang,Chen-Chang.
Abstract Background Deinagkistrodon acutus envenomation is associated with severe hematological and wound complications but is rarely described. Case presentation Herein, we report three cases of victims bitten by D. acutus and indicate that rapid-onset severe coagulopathy and thrombocytopenia are distinct features of D. acutus snakebite, which are not observed in other crotaline snakebites (i.e., Trimeresurus stejnegeri and Protobothrops mucrosquamatus) in Taiwan. The toxic effects could occur as early as 2 to 3 h following D. acutus envenomation and persist if the administration of specific antivenom is delayed or even not commenced. Based on our findings, 2 to 4 vials of specific antivenom as the first dose should be administered to victims and...

Odynophagia following retained bee stinger J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Viswanathan,S; Viswanathan,S; Iqbal,N; Shanmugam,V; Srinath,G.
Nearly half of Hymenoptera stings affect the head and neck region of victims, but reports on oropharyngeal bee stings are very few. We describe the case of a patient with odynophagia and suffocation in mass envenomation. He had a retained bee stinger whose removal was delayed for more than 24 hours following the sting, due to persisting angioedema. Odynophagia receded after removal of the stinger and treatment with paracetamol, steroids and metronidazole. The patient also developed rhabdomyolysis, renal failure and hepatitis that were treated with conservative therapy. Oropharyngeal stings can simulate symptoms of persisting angioedema in victims of mass envenomation.

Uveitis following anti-snake venom therapy J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Nayak,S. G.; Satish,R.; Nityanandam,S.; Thomas,R. K..
Snakebite is a common medical emergency in the tropics, causing multisystemic involvement. Ophthalmic manifestations after snakebite have included ptosis and ophthalmoplegia. Uveitis as an immunological complication following therapy with anti-snake venom (ASV) serum has been rarely reported in literature. We reported two patients who developed uveitis and acute renal failure following snakebite treatment with ASV serum. Both patients recovered uneventfully with appropriate therapy.

Viper bites complicate chronic agrochemical nephropathy in rural Sri Lanka J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Silva,Anjana; Samarasinghe,Rivikelum; Pilapitiya,Senaka; Dahanayake,Niroshana; Siribaddana,Sisira.
Snakebite is a common occupational health hazard among Sri Lankan agricultural workers, particularly in the North Central Province. Viperine snakes, mainly Russell’s viper envenomation, frequently lead to acute renal failure. During the last two decades, an agrochemical nephropathy, a chronic tubulointerstitial disease has rapidly spread over this area leading to high morbidity and mortality. Most of the epidemiological characteristics of these two conditions overlap, increasing the chances of co-occurrence. Herein, we describe four representative cases of viperine snakebites leading to variable clinical presentations, in patients with chronic agrochemical nephropathy, including two patients presented with acute and delayed anuria. These cases suggest the...

Stings from Euscorpius flavicaudis (De Geer, 1778) (Scorpiones, Euscorpiidae) during pregnancy: a clinical case report J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Dutto,M; Dutto,L; Bertero,M; Goyffon,M.
We report a case in which a 21-week pregnant woman was stung by a Euscorpius flavicaudis (De Geer, 1778) scorpion. Symptoms and signs experienced by the patient were the same as those documented in the literature and with no ill-effects for the pregnancy. Envenoming was local and of low degree of intensity. It is important to emphasize that the patient was stung in her home, which differs from stings in most other parts of the world, in which scorpionism is mostly a risk in outdoor areas.

Snakebite in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso: illustration of realities and challenges for care based on a clinical case J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Kyelem,CG; Yaméogo,TM; Ouédraogo,SM; Zoungrana,J; Poda,GEA; Rouamba,MM; Ouangré,A; Kissou,SA; Rouamba,A.
We report herein the case of 19-year-old female farmer who suffered a double snakebite on the right foot. After an unsuccessful traditional treatment, she consulted a health center, 48 hours after the bite. Upon arrival at the hospital, she showed signs of severe damage, including hemorrhagic syndrome, extensive gangrene of the bitten limb and severe acute renal failure. Due to financial constraints, neither antivenom nor the scheduled amputation was performed. After 35 days of hospitalization, she returned home, against the advice of medical personnel. Our case summarizes the daily challenges of patients and practitioners that suffer snakebite envenomation in Bobo-Dioulasso, western Burkina Faso.

Survival of a newborn from a pregnant woman with rabies infection J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Zhen-Yu,Qu; Guo-Wei,Li; Qiao-Ge,Chen; Peng,Jiang; Chang,Liu; Alfred,Lam.
Abstract Background Rabies is very common in People’s Republic of China. Each year thousands of people die because of this disease, but rabies diagnosed in pregnancy is very rare. Case Presentation In this study, we report the case of a pregnant woman who was infected with the rabies virus after a dog bite. The symptoms of rabies appeared in labor and she died after pregnancy. Her baby and husband did not develop the disease. Conclusion The phenomenon that the newborn infant was healthy may be related to the protective role of placenta in resisting the invasion of the rabies virus or the absence of systemic viremia. The prompt administration of vaccines and anti-rabies immunoglobulin to the infant may have also contributed to his survival.

Documented bites by a yellow sac spider (Cheiracanthium punctorium) in Italy: a case report J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Papini,R.
In Italy reports of human envenomations by yellow sac spiders have been sporadic. Since increasing clinical information would improve understanding of the danger of yellow sac spiders to humans, we report the case of a 7-year-old child and her father bitten by a documented Cheiracanthium punctorium. They developed acute persistent pain with local skin signs and numbness, and required emergency treatment. The father recovered completely within 1 to 2 hours and the child within 3 to 4 days after treatment, probably as a result of spontaneous evolution. Clinicians should be aware of the risks and immediate management of spider bites.

Envenoming by Viridovipera stejnegeri snake: a patient with liver cirrhosis presenting disruption of hemostatic balance J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Chien,Chih-Ying; Liao,Shu-Chen; Liao,Chien-Hung; Huang,Ting-Shuo; Chen,Yu-Hsien.
Abstract Background In most cases of envenoming by the green habu Viridovipera stejnegeri in Taiwan coagulopathy is not observed. Case presentation Herein, we describe the case of a patient with liver cirrhosis who developed venom-induced consumptive coagulopathy after V. stejnegeri bite. Laboratory investigation revealed the following: prothrombin time > 100 s (international normalized ratio > 10), activated partial thromboplastin time > 100 s, fibrinogen < 50 mg/dL, and fibrin degradation product > 80 μg/mL. The patient recovered after administration of bivalent hemorrhagic antivenom, vitamin K, fresh frozen plasma and cryoprecipitate. Conclusion The liver, directly involved in the acute phase reaction, is the main responsible for...

Fatal neurotoxic envenomation following the bite of a greater black krait (Bungarus niger) in Nepal: a case report J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Pandey,Deb Prasad; Sharma,Sanjib Kumar; Alirol,Emilie; Chappuis,François; Kuch,Ulrich.
Abstract Background Neurotoxic envenomation following bites by kraits (Bungarus species) is a leading cause of snakebite mortality in South Asia. Over a long time, this had been attributed only to one species, the common krait (Bungarus caeruleus). However, recent research has provided increasing evidence of the involvement of several krait species. Here, we report a fatal case of neurotoxic envenomation following the bite of a greater black krait (Bungarus niger) in Nepal. Case presentation A 33-year-old man was bitten in the outdoor corridor of his home in the eastern hills of Ilam district while handling a snake he thought to be non-venomous. He subsequently developed severe abdominal pain, frequent vomiting, and signs of neurotoxic envenomation...
