The Gulf of Lion margin has been created by an Oligo-Aquitanian rifting followed by oceanic accretion in the Provencal basin during the Burdigalian. Two main periods have been detailed in this study. The Messinian event represents a clear marker (between 7 and 5.3 Ma) within the history of the basin. The study of sedimentary geometries on the margin and in the deep basin gave new elements for the understanding of the messinian crisis: The first element is the identification of a thick detritic series (up to 1000 m) at the transition between the sub aerially eroded shelf and the slope. The base of this series corresponds to the very first event of the Messinian crisis. The second important element is the identification of a thick stratum of lower... |

On October 16, 1979, off the Bay of Nice, a turbidity current, generated by large submarine landslides. was channelled by submarine valleys down to the bathyal plain of the Ligurian Sea where it seriously damaged two submarine cables, at about 80 and 110 km from its starting-point. The measured mean speeds were 17 km/h, above the first cable, and 7 km/h between the two cables, but the speed may have reached 40 km/h on the upper slope. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR] |

This thesis consists of an introduction and three individual papers that investigate the possibility for identifying the sedimentary imprint of catchment processes in lake sediments, emphasising on extreme events and in particular those deposited by river floods. Three individual lake sediment basins in southern Norway have been studied and changes in the frequency of such events are reconstructed for the last c. 10,000 years. In Paper I, the sediments of the glacier-fed Lake Russvatnet in eastern Jotunheimen (61′ N 8′ E) were studied. The record comprises a combination of glacier-derived material produced by the glacier Blackwellbreen and also several episodic processes in the catchment area such as floods and debris flows. In order to distinguish late-... |

The distribution of Fe, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd between the dissolved (<2 mu m) and the particulate (>2 mu m) fractions was measured after in-situ filtration in two hydrothermal habitats. The total metal concentration ranges exhibit a clear enrichment compared with the seawater concentration, accounting for the hydrothermal input for all the metals considered. Iron is the predominant metal (5-50 mu M) followed by Zn and Cu. Cd and Pb are present at the nM level. At the scale studied, the behavior of temperature, pH and dissolved iron is semi-conservative whereas the other dissolved and particulate metals are characterized by non-conservative patterns. The metal enrichment of the >2 mu m fraction results from the settlement and accumulation of particulate... |

As living carbonate-based structures, coral reefs are highly vulnerable to ocean acidification. The Great Barrier Reef (GBR) is the largest continuous coral reef system in the world. Its economic, social, and icon assets are valued at AU$56 billion (Deloitte Access Economics, 2017), owing to its vast biodiversity and services related to commercial and recreational fisheries, shoreline protection, and reef-related tourism and recreation. Ocean acidification poses a significant risk to these ecological and socioeconomic services, threatening not only the structural foundation of the GBR but the livelihoods of reef-dependent sectors of society. To assess the vulnerabilities of the GBR to ocean acidification, we review the characteristics of the GBR and the... |

In a previous article published in the "cahiers Océanographiques" XXII, 1 (January 1970), pp. 25-32, I described the broad lines of subactual sedimentation in and around the canyon of Toulon. This data had been collected during a drilling cruise conducted in October 1967. Out of the 41 successful drillings, 17 had enabled the collection of rock samples representing, either the Maures basement in which the canyon of Toulon is cut, or more recent deposits, episodes of the eustatic or tectonic variations of the water level over the Quaternary and maybe the Pliocene era. |

The generation of ultra-low frequency acoustic noise (0.1 to 1 Hz) by the nonlinear interaction of ocean surface gravity waves is well established. More controversial are the quantitative theories that attempt to predict the recorded noise levels and their variability. Here a single theoretical framework is used to predict the noise level associated with propagating pseudo-Rayleigh modes and evanescent acoustic-gravity modes. The latter are dominant only within 200 m from the sea surface, in shallow or deep water. At depths larger than 500 m, the comparison of a numerical noise model with hydrophone records from two open-ocean sites near Hawaii and the Kerguelen islands reveal: (a) Deep ocean acoustic noise at frequencies 0.1 to 1 Hz is consistent with the... |

Heinrich events (HEs) are dramatic episodes of marine-terminating ice discharge and sediment rafting during periods of cold North Atlantic climate. However, the causal chain of events leading to their occurrence is unresolved. Here, we demonstrate that enhanced surface melting of land-terminating margins of the southern Fennoscandian Ice Sheet (FIS) is a recurring feature of Heinrich stadials (HSs), the cold periods during which HEs occur. We use neodymium isotopes to show that the Channel River transported detrital sediments from the interior of eastern Europe to the Bay of Biscay in the northeast Atlantic Ocean at ca. 158–154 ka. Based on similar evidence from the last glacial period, we infer that this interval corresponds to the melting and retreat of... |

Species usually develop reproductive isolation mechanisms allowing them to avoid interbreeding. These preventive barriers can act before reproduction, “pre-zygotic barriers”, or after reproduction, “post-zygotic barriers”. Pre-zygotic barriers prevent unfavourable mating, while post-zygotic barriers determine the viability and selective success of the hybrid offspring. Hybridization in parasites and the underlying reproductive isolation mechanisms maintaining their genetic integrity have been overlooked. Using an integrated approach this work aims to quantify the relative importance of pre-zygotic barriers in Schistosoma haematobium x S. bovis crosses. These two co-endemic species cause schistosomiasis, one of the major debilitating parasitic diseases... |
