Carotenoid producing bacteria in the accessory nidamental glands of Sepia officinalis L. OMA
Van den Branden, C.; Gillis, M.; Richard, A..
1. The accessory nidamental glands of the cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis L. show an intensive orange-red coloration in mature females. This colour is due to carotenoid pigments which occur in symbiotic bacteria. 2. Six different pigmented strains of bacteria were isolated. 3. The main pigment in five of these strains is beta-carotene. 4. The main pigment in the sixth strain is the keto carotenoid, adonixanthin.

In vitro experiments on the predation by the swimming crab, Macropipus holsatus, on brine shrimps, Crangon crangon OMA
Borremans, C.; Redant, F..
In vitro experiments on the predatory behaviour of the Portunid crabMacropipus holsatus indicate that it is not a very efficient predator of brown shrimp, Crangon crangon. Only about 2 % of the shrimps in the test units were killed and partly eaten by the crabs. These findings are compared to the results of earlier investigations on the food composition and feeding behaviour of Macropipus holsatus by Amrom (1961). Previous assumptions on the detrimental effect of the swimming crab on the shrimp stock and fishery should be attenuated.

The ecology of marine nematodes OMA
Heip, C.H.R.; Vincx, M.; Vranken, G..
Nematodes are probably the most abundant metazoans in the biosphere and of very great importance to man. As parasites of man they are responsible for disease in hundreds of millions of people and an estimated eight billion nematodes are enjoying food, warmth and shelter in human intestines today; Ascaris lumbricoides is, after the viruses responsible for diarrhoeal disease, the second most infectious organism in the world, about a quarter of the world's population being infected (Ash, Crompton & Keymer, 1984). Plant-parasitic nematodes cause considerable damage to crops and many species are vectors of soil-borne viruses. Today, plant nematology is one of the most vital fields in agricultural research and is studied in many university...

Contributions to the study of the comparative morphology of teeth and other relevant ichthyodorulites in living supraspecific taxa of Chondrichthyan fishes. Addendum to part A, 1: Order: Hexanchiformes - Family: Hexanchidae. Odontological results supporting the validity of Hexanchus vitulus Springer & Waller, 1969 as the third species of the genus Hexanchus Rafinesque, 1810, and suggesting intrafamilial reordering of the Hexanchidae OMA
Herman, J.; Hovestadt-Euler, M.; Hovestadt, D.C..
The tooth morphology of all hexanchid species, including the controversial species Hexanchus nakamurai and H. vitulus, is re-examined and illustrated. Odontologically Hexanchus nakamurai is clearly distinct from H. vitulus. An odontological determination key to all hexanchid species is given. The odontological results presented suggest another intrafamilial ordering of the taxa than by the number of branchial arches, which seem to be less important.

The relative importance of nannoplankton in the North Sea primary production OMA
Mommaerts, J.-P..
The South Bight of the North Sea has been investigated for the photosynthetic capacity of net- and nannoplankton, the fractional filtration method being used simultaneously with the C14 technique. The water appeared to be well mixed so that no important variations occurred along the vertical profile. The horizontal distribution of net-/nannoplankton ratios showed, however, a zonation pattern with netplankton-dominant activity near to the coast and nannoplankton-dominant activity further off. The interference of the River Scheldt has also been demonstrated. The various implications of the 'metabolic structure' of the phytoplankton community demonstrated by the fractionation method are discussed.

Revisie van de Monocelididae Hofsten, 1907 (Platyhelminthes) OMA
Martens, P.M..
This study constitutes a revision of the Digonoporid Lithophora Proseriata which correspond to the Monocelididae sensu Karling 1966a. The revision is based on morphological and karyological investigations. Morphological research is performed on living animals as well as on whole mounts and sectioned material. For about 30 species the copulatory organs are reconstructed using serial sections. Karyological investigation consist of a and p karyology. Both morphological and karyological data are used for phylogenetic analysis and the new system proposed reflects the hypothesized genealogical relationships. Since the beginning of our studies, the total amount of species described for this group has increased from 81 to 133, 41 of which are described by us. In...

Partitioning of a brackish water habitat by copepod species OMA
Heip, C.H.R..
1. The successful species of copepods in a brackish water habitat show a separation in time with regard to the date of maximum occurrence and the date of maximum reproductive activity. The succession of the five species examinated is: Mesochra lilljeborgi, Paronychocamptus nanus, Tachidius discipes, Halicyclops magniceps and Canuella perplexa.2. These species and others show moreover a separation in space: C. perplexa is an endopsammic, P. nanus a mesopsammic and T. discipes an epipsammic species. Three cyclopoid species are planktonic. Two other species (Nitocra typica and Mesochra lilljeborgi are more numerous in the...

Influence of temperature on the reproductive potential of Oncholaimus oxyuris (Nematoda: Oncholaimidae) OMA
Heip, C.H.R.; Smol, N.; Absillis, V..
The large nematode Oncholaimus oxyuris Ditlevsen, 1911 is a dominant predator in a shallow polyhaline brackish-water pond in Belgium. The reproductive potential of this species was calculated as the intrinsic rate of natural increase r = 1/G ln pNe, in which D is the generation time, p is the percentage of females, and Ne is the number of eggs per female. The generation time varies between 570 days at 5°C and 101 days at 25°C and is the main factor in the determination of r. The relationship between r and temperature is nearly linear and is given by...

Selected bacterial strains protect Artemia spp. from the pathogenic effects of Vibrio proteolyticus CW8T2 OMA
Verschuere, L.; Heang, H.; Criel, G.R.J.; Sorgeloos, P.; Verstraete, W..
In this study Vibrio proteolyticus CW8T2 has been identified as a virulent pathogen for Artemia spp. Its infection route has been visualized with transmission electron microscopy. The pathogen affected microvilli and gut epithelial cells, disrupted epithelial cell junctions, and reached the body cavity, where it devastated cells and tissues. In vivo antagonism tests showed that pre-emptive colonization of the culture water with nine selected bacterial strains protected Artemia juveniles against the pathogenic effects. Two categories of the selected strains could be distinguished: (i) strains providing total protection, as no mortality occurred 2 days after the experimental infection with V....

Six-legged walking by a bottom-dwelling fish OMA
Renous, S.; Gasc, J.-P.; Bels, V.L.; Davenport, J..
The hypothesis of a locomotor role for the free rays of Trigloporus lastoviza is supported by: (1) their periodic retraction and protraction during slow displacement over the substratum whenever the propulsive body wave responsible for swimming is not visible; (2) the integration of the rays' individual cycles into a hexapod gait apparently generated by a metachronal impulse; and (3) the kinematic features of the longest free ray in relation to the bottom-walking velocity.

The meiobenthos of the North Sea: density, biomass trends and distribution of copepod communities OMA
Huys, R.; Herman, P.M.J.; Heip, C.H.R.; Soetaert, K..
During a synoptic survey carried out in April-May 1986, 171 localities were sampled in the North Sea as delimited by the Straits of Dover in the south and approximately by the 100m isobath in the north. Meiobenthos included Nematoda, Copepoda, Turbellaria, Gastrotricha, Polychaeta, Oligochaeta, Priapulida, Kinorhyncha, Ostracoda, Halacarida, Isopoda, Tanaidacea, Bryozoa, Cnidaria, Sipunculida, Echiurida, Nemertini and Tardigrada. Nematodes were the dominant group in virtually all stations, their densities ranging from 61 to 4167 individuals. 10cm-2. Only in the Southern Bight, where nematode numbers were low, did harpacticoids sometimes represent the dominant meiobenthic taxon. There was a tendency for nematode (and total...

Individual particle analysis of Western Mediterranean sediment cores, Rhône suspended matter and Sahara aerosols: investigation of inputs to the sediments OMA
Wegrzynek, D.; Jambers, W.; Van Grieken, R.; Eisma, D..
Individual particle analysis using electron probe X-ray microanalysis was performed on sediment cores from the Gulf of Lions (Western Mediterranean Sea), on atmospheric aerosols sampled in Corsica and originating from Northern Africa, and on Rhône suspended matter. Cluster analysis was done to yield major particle types and kriging spatial analysis was applied to obtain the distributions of the particle types in the sediment surface layers. For three sediment cores, the depth profiles of particle groups were examined. The predominant particle types composing the sediment material in the Gulf of Lions were found to be Si-rich particles (quartz and biogenic silicate), aluminosilicate minerals (illite, kaolinite, chlorite) and Ca-rich particles (aragonite,...

Données supplémentaires sur Polysiphonia banyulensis Coppejans (Ceramiales, Rhodophyceae) OMA
Coppejans, E..
The tetrasporophytes of Polysiphonia banyulensis Coppejans collected in Corsica correspond exactly to those collected at Banyuls (Pyr.-Or., France), in that these also have 5 pericentral cells. The presence of 4 pericentral cells, mentioned in the original description is only correct for a part of the holotype. Thus P. banyulensis belongs to the section Polysiphonia. The female gametophytes, collected in July 1977 at Calvi (Corsica) are smaller and present numerous short-stalked spherical cystocarps without special cells around the ostiole. The other characters of the species (typical aspect of trichoblasts, presence of 5 pericentral cells, total absence of cortication) are also present.

The role of Callionymus lyra and C. reticulatus in the life cycle of Lernaeocera lusci in Belgian coastal waters (Southern Bight of the North Sea) OMA
Van Damme, P.A.; Maertens, D.; Arrumm, A.; Hamerlynck, O.; Ollevier, F.P..
A survey of the dragonet Callionymus lyra and the reticulated dragonet C. reticulatus from Belgian coastal waters (Southern Bight of the North Sea) in June 1991 revealed 34% of dragonets infected with 1-7 Lernaeocera lusci. This same parasite infected 9% of the reticulated dragonets (mean intensity = 1). Parasite size is host-size-dependent. Of the parasites collected from C. lyra 64% were gravid adults (substage X), and a significant positive relationship between the number of eggs and axial length of the parasite was found. The parasites were overdispersed within the dragonet population (s²/m=1.67).

International study on Artemia : 18. The hatching rate of Artemia cysts: a comparative study OMA
Vanhaecke, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
A comparative study has been carried out on the hatching rate of Artemia cysts of different geographical origin and on different batches of the same source. Substantial variation, among as well as within geographical strains, indicates that the hatching-rate criterion is not strain specific. In an attempt to identify the parameters which influence the hatching rate, it was found that the cyst-drying technique as well as the storage conditions may significantly affect this criterion. It has also been demonstrated that the cysts' hatchability is influenced by their previous drying and storing conditions. Optimal hatching results are guaranteed when a fluidized bed dryer is used and the cysts are stored under vacuum or nitrogen.
