Végétation marine de l'Ile de Port-Cros (Parc National): 15. <i>Ceramium cingulatum</i> Weber van Bosse nouvelle pour la Méditerranée, et quelques populations d'un <i>Ceramium</i> sp. à parasporocystes OMA
Coppejans, E..
<i>Ceramium cingulatum</i> Weber van Bosse described in 1923 after material from Siboga (Sumatra, Indian Ocean) has never been mentioned from the Mediterranean Sea. We found it regularly while assorting phytosociological relevés from Banyuls, Marseille and Port-Cros (France). Some populations of <i>Ceramium</i> sp. growing epiphytically on <i>Amphiroa rigida</i> Lamour, near the water at Port-Cros (Var, France) were richly and exclusively provided with parasporocysts. These reproductive organs are not very frequent in the genus <i>Ceramium</i>.

Evolution of trace metal concentrations in the Scheldt estuary (1978-1995): a comparison with estuarine and ocean levels OMA
Baeyens, W.F.J..
Dissolved and particulate metal concentrations assessed in the Scheldt estuary in the period 1978-1995, yield a clear indication that the levels of all metals decreased significantly. A comparison with other estuaries classifies the Scheldt as being moderately polluted for all metals in the dissolved phase, but as being fairly high polluted in the particulate phase, especially for Cd. However, even the dissolved metal concentration fractions in the Scheldt are still between 10 to 50 times enriched compared to total metal concentrations in unpolluted seas and oceans.

Two new species of the genus <i>Duplacrorhynchus</i> Schockaert & Karling, 1970, with remarks on relationships within the genus and on the Duplacrorhynchinae (Platyhelminthes, Polycystididae) OMA
Artois, T.; Schockaert, E..
Two new species of Polycystididae are described: <i>Duplacrorhynchus megalophallus</i> sp. nov. from the bay of Marseille (France) and <i>D. heyleni</i> sp. nov. from Zanzibar (Tanzania). The female system of both is characterized by the presence of a muscular bulb at the proximal end of the bursal stalk, with three strong teeth in <i>D. megalophallus</i>, and in <i>D. heyleni</i> the muscle bulb is highly asymmetric. In <i>D. megalophallus</i> the copulatory bulb is divided by a septum, and the cirrus has small spines and a proximal umbrella-like expansion. In <i>D. heyleni</i> only the cirrus, which has strong teeth, is enclosed in the cirrus sack: the seminal and prostate vesicles...

Le recouvrement biogène le long de la côte belge OMA
Lefevere, S..
Marine fouling causes economical problems. Fouling diminishes the efficiency of propulsion of the ships. It enlarges the cost in fuel. Another effect is the loss in time and money because it necessitates frequent docking of the ships. These organisms increase the corrosion of metal in seawater. The damage to the timber constructions by marine borers causes renewed change of the piles. Therefore information was given about the principal fouling organisms at the Belgian coast. Some biologic aspects of the fouling were reviewed as the biotic succession by the different communities, the relation of fouling growth to local environments, the vertical zonation and the settling behavior of larvae controlled by salinity, temperature and light.

Morphology of the pectoral girdle in <i>Pomatoschistus lozanoi</i> De Buen, 1923 (Gobiidae), in relation to pectoral fin adduction OMA
Adriaens, D.; Decleyre, D.; Verraes, W..
Like most gobies, <i>Pomatoschistus lozanoi</i> is a benthic fish species. During locomotion the pectoral fin adduction is of great importance in generating a forward propulsion. Several specimens of <i>Pomatoschistus lozanoi</i> were dissected, cleared with staining and sectioned with staining, in order to examine the morphology of the pectoral girdle-apparatus. In this paper a detailed description is given of the skeletal elements, the musculature and the ligaments of the pectoral girdle-apparatus. The pectoral fins of gobies seem better adapted to powerful adduction than a generalised teleost. The proximal radials form a large rigid shoulder plate with a long distal margin on which a high pectoral fin articulates. The fin muscles...

The mobile epifauna of the soft bottoms in the subtidal Oosterschelde estuary: structure, function and impact of the storm-surge barrier OMA
Hostens, K.; HamerlyncK, O..
Data on the mobile epifauna of the Oosterschelde estuary, collected by beam trawl, were compiled from several studies. Multivariate statistical techniques brought out the fact that the Oosterschelde, when compared with neighbouring areas, has a characteristic epibenthic fauna. Diversity as measured by Hill's diversity numbers N through N +infinite, is higher for the Oosterschelde (N1=4.5) than for the Voordelta (N1=3.5) and the Westerschelde (N1=2.2).Four epifaunal communities can be distinguished within the Oosterschelde, the two most seaward communities being the richest. Annual production is estimated at about 6 gADW m-2...

Bioencapsulation of the antibacterial drug sarafloxacin in nauplii of the brine shrimp <i>Artemia franciscana</i> OMA
Dixon, B.A.; Van Poucke, S.; Chair, M.; Dehasque, M.; Nelis, H.J.; Sorgeloos, P.; De Leenheer, A.P..
Nauplii of the brine shrimp <i>Artemia franciscana</i> were enriched with the antibacterial drug sarafloxacin hydrochloride to determine if levels effective against four pathogenetic strains of <i>Vibrio</i> spp. would accumulate in brine shrimp. Three vibrio strains were <i>Vibrio anguillarum</i>; the fourth was <i>V. vulnificus</i>. Concentrations of sarafloxacin ranging from 1 to 40% (weight: volume) were incorporated into the oil phase of Super Selco brine shrimp diets. Enriched nauplii and controls were sampled at 2h interval for 24h. Antibiotic sensitivity testing was evaluated with a modification of the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method. A microbiological assay with <i>Escherichia coli</i>...

Coprecipitation with aluminium hydroxide and x-ray fluorescence determination of trace metals in water OMA
Eltayeb, M.A.H.; Van Grieken, R..
Coprecipitation of trace elements on aluminium hydroxide was combined with energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence for the analysis of environmental water. The parameters for the preconcentration method were studied. The optimum procedure involves addition of 1 mg of the carrier, at pH 7.3, to a 200-ml water sample. The pH was adjusted by addition of ammonia solution. Quantitative recoveries were obtained for Ti(IV), Cr(III_, As(V), Pb(II) and Th(IV). The precision was 4–6% and the detection limits were in the range 0.2–0.8 µg l-1.

Mass culture of algae: a bottleneck in the nursery culturing of molluscs OMA
Persoone, G.; Claus, C..
The controlled culture of larvae of molluscs of commercial importance (oysters, clams, etc.) till spatfall implies the daily production of substantial volumes of suitable species of microscopic algae. For economic reasons, industrial mollusc hatcheries cannot, however, upscale the very expensive indoor algal production to fulfill the increasing food demands of the growing spat. As too early transplantation of the postlarvae to the natural environment results in various technological and biological problems, the intermediate semi-controlled "nursery" culturing of the spat up to a few centimeters in length is presently more and more preconized. The different technologies utilized for nursery culturing are reviewed with special emphasis on the major problem:...

Spermatozoal morphology and ultrastructure of channel catfish, <i>Ictalurus punctatus</i> OMA
Jaspers, E.J.; Avault, J.W. Jr.; Roussel, J.D..
The morphology, dimensions, aberrations, and ultrastructure of channel catfish (<i>Ictalurus punctatus</i>) spermatozoa were studied. Spermatozoa of a wild catfish stock from Louisiana were compared to those of a domestic stock from Mississippi. The spermatozoon of channel catfish consists of a rounded dark head, a collar-like midpiece, and a long flagellum. The average dimensions were: head length, 2.3 µm; midpiece length, 1.6 µm; midpiece width, 3.1 µm; and flagellum length, 94.9 µm. The flagellum had the classical (2.9 + 2) axoneme. On the average, 4.7% of the spermatozoa in the fish studied were biflagellar. Each flagellum arose from an individual centriolar complex. Domestic fish stock had a higher percentage of normal gametes compared to...

Feeding of the hyperbenthic mysid <i>Neomysis integer</i> in the maximum turbidity zone of the Elbe, Westerschelde and Gironde estuaries OMA
Fockedey, N.; Mees, J..
The diet of the mysid <i>Neomysis integer</i>in the maximum turbidity zone (MTZ) of three European estuaries (Elbe, Westerschelde and Gironde) was investigated in spring 1993. The quality and quantity of the diet were assessed through measurement of the stomach fullness and microscopical analysis of the stomach content combined with image analyses. <i>N. integer</i> was found to be an omnivore which mainly utilizes mesozooplankton and detritus carbon pools. The quality of the diet did not differ between the sexes or between different developmental stages, although smaller individuals consumed fewer items. In all three estuaries the diet was dominated by Copepoda Calanoida (5-10 <i>Eurytemora affinis</i>...
