Dissolved and particulate metal concentrations assessed in the Scheldt estuary in the period 1978-1995, yield a clear indication that the levels of all metals decreased significantly. A comparison with other estuaries classifies the Scheldt as being moderately polluted for all metals in the dissolved phase, but as being fairly high polluted in the particulate phase, especially for Cd. However, even the dissolved metal concentration fractions in the Scheldt are still between 10 to 50 times enriched compared to total metal concentrations in unpolluted seas and oceans. |

Two new species of Polycystididae are described: <i>Duplacrorhynchus megalophallus</i> sp. nov. from the bay of Marseille (France) and <i>D. heyleni</i> sp. nov. from Zanzibar (Tanzania). The female system of both is characterized by the presence of a muscular bulb at the proximal end of the bursal stalk, with three strong teeth in <i>D. megalophallus</i>, and in <i>D. heyleni</i> the muscle bulb is highly asymmetric. In <i>D. megalophallus</i> the copulatory bulb is divided by a septum, and the cirrus has small spines and a proximal umbrella-like expansion. In <i>D. heyleni</i> only the cirrus, which has strong teeth, is enclosed in the cirrus sack: the seminal and prostate vesicles... |

Out of eight species of pisionids sampled in Papua New Guinea, six are new to science: <i>Pisione helenae</i> n.sp., <i>P. parhelenae</i> n. sp., <i>P. parva</i> n. sp.,<i>P. brevicirra</i> n. sp.,<i>P. ungulata</i> n. sp. and <i>P. primitiva</i> n. sp. Some remarks are given for <i>P. subulata</i> Yamanishi, 1992, new for Papua New Guinea, and for <i>P. papuensis</i> Govaere & De Wilde, 1993. Special attention was paid to some female worms. A key is included for the Pisionidae of Papua New Guinea. |

Marine fouling causes economical problems. Fouling diminishes the efficiency of propulsion of the ships. It enlarges the cost in fuel. Another effect is the loss in time and money because it necessitates frequent docking of the ships. These organisms increase the corrosion of metal in seawater. The damage to the timber constructions by marine borers causes renewed change of the piles. Therefore information was given about the principal fouling organisms at the Belgian coast. Some biologic aspects of the fouling were reviewed as the biotic succession by the different communities, the relation of fouling growth to local environments, the vertical zonation and the settling behavior of larvae controlled by salinity, temperature and light. |

Data on the mobile epifauna of the Oosterschelde estuary, collected by beam trawl, were compiled from several studies. Multivariate statistical techniques brought out the fact that the Oosterschelde, when compared with neighbouring areas, has a characteristic epibenthic fauna. Diversity as measured by Hill's diversity numbers N through N +infinite, is higher for the Oosterschelde (N1=4.5) than for the Voordelta (N1=3.5) and the Westerschelde (N1=2.2).Four epifaunal communities can be distinguished within the Oosterschelde, the two most seaward communities being the richest. Annual production is estimated at about 6 gADW m-2... |

Coprecipitation of trace elements on aluminium hydroxide was combined with energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence for the analysis of environmental water. The parameters for the preconcentration method were studied. The optimum procedure involves addition of 1 mg of the carrier, at pH 7.3, to a 200-ml water sample. The pH was adjusted by addition of ammonia solution. Quantitative recoveries were obtained for Ti(IV), Cr(III_, As(V), Pb(II) and Th(IV). The precision was 4–6% and the detection limits were in the range 0.2–0.8 µg l-1. |

The controlled culture of larvae of molluscs of commercial importance (oysters, clams, etc.) till spatfall implies the daily production of substantial volumes of suitable species of microscopic algae. For economic reasons, industrial mollusc hatcheries cannot, however, upscale the very expensive indoor algal production to fulfill the increasing food demands of the growing spat. As too early transplantation of the postlarvae to the natural environment results in various technological and biological problems, the intermediate semi-controlled "nursery" culturing of the spat up to a few centimeters in length is presently more and more preconized. The different technologies utilized for nursery culturing are reviewed with special emphasis on the major problem:... |

The morphology, dimensions, aberrations, and ultrastructure of channel catfish (<i>Ictalurus punctatus</i>) spermatozoa were studied. Spermatozoa of a wild catfish stock from Louisiana were compared to those of a domestic stock from Mississippi. The spermatozoon of channel catfish consists of a rounded dark head, a collar-like midpiece, and a long flagellum. The average dimensions were: head length, 2.3 µm; midpiece length, 1.6 µm; midpiece width, 3.1 µm; and flagellum length, 94.9 µm. The flagellum had the classical (2.9 + 2) axoneme. On the average, 4.7% of the spermatozoa in the fish studied were biflagellar. Each flagellum arose from an individual centriolar complex. Domestic fish stock had a higher percentage of normal gametes compared to... |
