Legumes are prime source of plant proteins, calories and other nutrients. Extrusion cooking of legumes increases the digestibility of legume protein. Extrusion technology has been applied to generate analogues of foods made from animal products, as well as snacks using blends of various plant raw materials e.g. oil seeds [soybeans, peanut with a cereal flour]. Present work was under taken for producing extruded product from pigeon pea. The legumes viz. pigeon pea and Bengal gram were cleaned and ground to required particle size by multipurpose grinder mill to pass through sieve ASTM No. 20. The moisture content of sample was adjusted to 14% moisture level (w.b.). Before extrusion, the feed was allowed to come to ambient temperature and then remixed, after... |

It is essential to evaluate the efficiency of water supply on varieties of crop, such as Coix lacryma-jobi L. (hanjeuli), particularly in water management. Coix lacryma-jobi L. (hanjeuli) is one of the crops that were not listed for Kc values to estimate the crop water use by CROPWAT ver 8.0. However, this study using the Kc values of sugar cane as approach to reveal actual evapo-transpiration. Hanjeuli comprises two varieties, namely stenocarpa and ma-yuen, which were used in this study to observe the water requirement for irrigation when cultivating agricultural products in a loamy soil using CROPWAT. The ETa (mm/day) generated by CROPWAT was used to calculate the sprinkler operation time (T+0.5, hour/day). The results showed that the trend of T+0.5... |

The effect of air temperature, air velocity and infrared (IR) radiation on the drying kinetics of sour cherry was investigated using a laboratory infrared dryer. Experiments were conducted at air temperatures of 35, 50 and 65°C, air velocities of 0.5, 1.1 and 1.7 m/s and IR radiations of 500, 1,000 and 1,500 W. Five empirical drying models for describing time dependence of the moisture ratio change were fitted to experimental data. Artificial neural network (ANN) method was used to predict the effective moisture diffusivity and specific energy consumption of the samples. Among the applied models, Midilli et al. model was the best to predict the thin layer drying behavior of sour cherry. Effective moisture diffusivity of sour cherry varied between... |

Biomass furnace ash (BFA) generated from drying of grains in mechanical dryers were blended with cement in varying ratio of 1:4, 1:5, 1:6, 1:7 and 1:8 by volume. Each composition was cured in an ambient condition for 7, 14 and 28 days and determined their properties such as density, porosity, compressive strength and thermal shock resistance. Cold crushing strength increased with increasing cement content and curing time. Likewise, density increased with increasing cement content and curing time while porosity showed the other way. All the sample compositions exceeded 30 cycles without any crack when subjected to thermal shock resistant cycles of heating and cooling using a firing temperature of 1000oC in an electric muffle furnace. |

Dimensions of 100 randomly selected coffee beans of the Arabica and Robusta variety were determined by measuring their length (l), width (b) and thickness (h). The results of the measurements were processed by the methods of mathematical statistics. Parameters of distributions of separate sizes as random variables are determined. By the value of the coefficient of variation, the density function of normal distribution (Gaussian distribution) is taken as a model of separate sizes of beans. Models of two-dimensional distributions of beans sizes as independent random variables are presented. The coefficients of correlation between the geometric sizes of beans are calculated. The obtained values of the correlation coefficients indicate that the geometric sizes... |

Use of cement-bonded composites is gaining prominence in construction works across the globe. Typical uses include roofing, cladding, ceiling and tiling of walls and floors. The use of these materials as hollow pipes is yet to be fully explored. There is, also, the challenge of the relatively high cost of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) in many developing countries which adds to the overall cost of cement-bonded composite products. This study was conducted, therefore, to develop composite hollow pipes using natural sponge fiber (Acanthanus montanus) as reinforcement at 3% by weight of cement. Lime, derived from welder’s carbide waste, was added as partial replacement for cement at 0 (control), 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50% levels respectively. The effects of... |

Solar radiation is the driving force for the surface energy balance in buildings such as greenhouses. The greenhouses are generally tilted towards the sun in order to maximize the solar irradiance on the surfaces. Precise computation of the solar radiation received on these surfaces assumes an important role in the energy simulation. It is practical to calculate the total solar irradiance on the tilted surfaces based on the solar global and diffuse radiation intensities on horizontal surfaces. In this work, a south-facing thermal box inclined at 26.5° from the horizontal was used for solar radiation measurements. Additionally, the recorded solar radiation data were retrieved for the study location and used to develop an empirical correlation. The... |
