Mathematical models of geometric sizes of coffee beans as dependent random variables CIGR Journal
Sheremeta, Roman; Kuzminskyj, Roman.
Dimensions of 100 randomly selected coffee beans of the Arabica and Robusta variety were determined by measuring their length (l), width (b) and thickness (h). The results of the measurements were processed by the methods of mathematical statistics. Parameters of distributions of separate sizes as random variables are determined. By the value of the coefficient of variation, the density function of normal distribution (Gaussian distribution) is taken as a model of separate sizes of beans. Models of two-dimensional distributions of beans sizes as independent random variables are presented. The coefficients of correlation between the geometric sizes of beans are calculated. The obtained values of the correlation coefficients indicate that the geometric sizes...

Natural fiber-reinforced composite hollow pipes for potential use in rural building construction in tropical Africa CIGR Journal
Olorunnisola, Abel Olajide; Boboye, Adetutu.
Use of cement-bonded composites is gaining prominence in construction works across the globe. Typical uses include roofing, cladding, ceiling and tiling of walls and floors. The use of these materials as hollow pipes is yet to be fully explored. There is, also, the challenge of the relatively high cost of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) in many developing countries which adds to the overall cost of cement-bonded composite products. This study was conducted, therefore, to develop composite hollow pipes using natural sponge fiber (Acanthanus montanus) as reinforcement at 3% by weight of cement. Lime, derived from welder’s carbide waste, was added as partial replacement for cement at 0 (control), 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50% levels respectively. The effects of...

Prediction of total solar irradiance on tilted greenhouse surfaces CIGR Journal
Ronoh, Erick K..
Solar radiation is the driving force for the surface energy balance in buildings such as greenhouses.  The greenhouses are generally tilted towards the sun in order to maximize the solar irradiance on the surfaces.  Precise computation of the solar radiation received on these surfaces assumes an important role in the energy simulation.  It is practical to calculate the total solar irradiance on the tilted surfaces based on the solar global and diffuse radiation intensities on horizontal surfaces.  In this work, a south-facing thermal box inclined at 26.5° from the horizontal was used for solar radiation measurements.  Additionally, the recorded solar radiation data were retrieved for the study location and used to develop an empirical correlation.  The...
