Economic Performance of U.S. Multinational Agribusinesses: Foreign Direct Investment and Firm Strategy AgEcon
Garcia-Fuentes, Pablo A.; Ferreira, Gustavo F.C.; Kennedy, P. Lynn.
This paper empirically assesses the sequential relationships among firm strategic factors, FDI activity, and economic performance for a sample of U.S.-based Multinational agribusinesses. The most important findings of this research is a positive direct effect of FDI on performance, the complementary effect between FDI and firm strategic factors (positive and significant interaction terms) on performance, and the positive effect of FDI on performance given some thresholds of firm strategic factors. Specifically, it provides insights about the direct effect of FDI on performance, as well as about the joint effect of firm size and FDI, marketing intensity and FDI, and capital intensity and FDI on performance. These findings provide evidence that FDI activity...

Heterogeneous Technologies as an Answer to Market and Price Risk: The Case of Kosovo AgEcon
Sauer, Johannes; Davidova, Sophia; Gorton, Matthew.
This paper empirically measures the prevalence of heterogeneous technologies in a sample of small-scale agricultural producers as an answer to structural conditions and market risks. Such risks are closely linked to the effects of land fragmentation and the degree of market integration. We use the empirical case of Kosovo as a transition country to investigate the efficiency effects of land fragmentation by simultaneously considering the effects of market integration. Different to previous studies, we assume that land fragmentation and market integration lead to the prevalence of heterogeneous technologies allowing farm households to respond more efficiently to exogenous price and policy shocks given their fragmentation and subsistence situation. The...

THE FEASIBILITY OF FARM REVENUE INSURANCE IN AUSTRALIA AgEcon
Meuwissen, Miranda P.M.; Huirne, Ruud B.M.; Hardaker, J. Brian.
Arrow (1965) stated that making markets for trading risk more complete can be socially beneficial. Within this perspective, we discuss the feasibility of farm revenue insurance for Australian agriculture. The feasibility is first discussed from an insurer's point of view. Well-known problems of moral hazard, adverse selection and systemic risk are central. Then, the feasibility is studied from a farmer’s point of view. A simulation model illustrates that gross revenue insurance can be both cheaper and more effective than separate price and yield insurance schemes. We argue that due to the systemic nature of price and yields risks within years and the positive correlation between years, some publicprivate partnership for reinsurance may be necessary for...

IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE AND INTERNATIONAL PRICES UNCERTAINTY ON THE SUDANESE SORGHUM MARKET: A STOCHASTIC APPROACH AgEcon
Sassi, Maria.
The paper simulates the possible sorghum price change and the related probability of occurrence under different rainfall scenarios and in a context of price uncertainty on international markets. The empirical investigation is based on the stochastic approach. Results underline an expected increase in sorghum price under the effect of the high level of uncertainty in precipitation and in international market price; the most intense likely change produced by the international market price of sorghum uncertainty; the need to overcome the agricultural view in policy making in order to include a market perspective.

Evaluating the Factors Influecing the Number of Visits to Farmers' Markets AgEcon
Abello, Francisco J.; Palma, Marco A.; Anderson, David P.; Waller, Mark W..
The primary objective of this paper was to determine key factors impacting the frequency of consumer visits to Texas farmers’ markets measured in number of visits per month. Data obtained from in-person surveys administered in two farmers’ markets locations were used to determine consumer, market factors, and socio-demographic characteristics of shoppers affecting frequency of visits. The results of the model showed that travel distance, number of adults in the household, market promotional characteristics such as entertainment and education activities, food events, as well as education and age were all determinants of frequency of visits to farmers’ markets.

The Value of Water Rights in Agricultural Properties in the Phoenix Active Management Area AgEcon
Yoo, James; Perrings, Charles; Kinzig, Ann; Abbott, Joshua K.; Simonit, Silvio; Connors, John P.; Maliszewski, Paul J..
This paper estimates the value of water rights in the Phoenix Active Management Area (AMA), Arizona. Within AMAs groundwater rights cannot be transferred separately from the agricultural land to which they apply. As a result there is no separate market for ground water rights. The lack of a market creates two problems: there is no direct signal of the scarcity of water and no mechanism for reallocating water from low-to-high value uses. Water can only be reallocated by changing land use. With the growth of metropolitan Phoenix the value of water committed to residential, commercial or industrial use has increased rapidly relative to the value of water committed to agriculture. This has led to the reallocation of land from agriculture to urban uses. To...

Factors Influencing The Demand For Chickpea In India: Implications For Marketing And Promotion In The Indian Chickpea Market AgEcon
Agbola, Frank W.; Bent, Martin J.M.; Kelley, Timothy G.; Rao, P. Parthasarathy.
The Indian Sub-Continent (ISC) is the largest pulse producing and consuming region in the world. Australian scientists, producers, processors and exporters require detailed information about these markets. One study of these markets aims to describe the Indian chickpea market and to quantify the value of quality traits in the market using statistical analysis. This paper describes the Indian chickpea market and reports the results of about forty interviews with wholesalers, retailers, processors, brokers and commission agents which were conducted in eight key Indian markets in May and August 1999. A subsequent paper will present the results of an econometric analysis, which attaches values to the product traits of samples taken at the time of the...

Promoting Healthful Foods: Could Water be the Answer? AgEcon
Cornwell, T. Bettina; McAlister, Anna R..
Food consumption choice rather than simply food consumption knowledge is now considered important in better understanding the unfolding obesity epidemic. In this paper, crossdisciplinary research examines food and drink combining. A survey-based pilot study examines the food and drink pairing preferences of young adults and shows strong preferences exist. A laboratory study with young children finds food consumption is not influenced by the child’s fussiness but is influenced by the drink accompaniment. Both palate preference and associative learning are explored as mechanisms driving the effects of drink context on food consumption.
