Extension of the IsaViz software for the representation of metabolic and regulatory networks BABT
Veiga,Diogo Fernando; Cecconello,Pedro de Stege; Lucca,José Eduardo de; Porto,Luismar Marques.
In this work we developed an extension of IsaViz software, a RDF (Resource Description Framework) authoring tool, designed to be a graphical environment to build models of metabolic and regulatory networks. This environment, called Metabolic IsaViz, was linked to a genomic library of types and was modeled on the basis of ontologies. Biochemical pathways included data at sequence level (e.g., the amino acid sequence of enzymes), besides kinetic and thermodynamic parameters for the reactions. Models created with Metabolic IsaViz could be exported to pathways simulators through SBML (Systems Biology Markup Language), which allowed to analyze the pathway dynamics of target chemicals.

Effect of Phosphorylation and Copper(II) or Iron(II) Ions Enrichment on Some Physicochemical Properties of Spelt Starch BABT
Rożnowski,Jacek; Fortuna,Teresa; Nowak,Katarzyna; Szuba,Edyta.
ABSTRACT: This paper provides an assessment of the effect of saturation of spelt starch and monostarch phosphate with copper or iron ions on selected physicochemical properties of the resulting modified starches. Native and modified spelt starch samples were analyzed for selected mineral element content using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS). Thermodynamic properties were measured using DSC, and pasting properties by RVA. Flow curves of 5% pastes were plotted and described using the Herschel-Bulkley model. The structure recovery ratio was measured. AAS analysis established the presence of iron(II) and copper(II) ions in the samples of modified starches and that potassium and magnesium ions had leached from them. In comparison to unfortified samples,...

In Vitro antileishmanial properties of neutron-irradiated meglumine antimoniate BABT
Borborema,Samanta Etel Treiger; Andrade Junior,Heitor Franco de; Osso Junior,João Alberto; Nascimento,Nanci do.
Pentavalent antimony, as meglumine antimoniate (Glucantime® ) or sodium stibogluconate (Pentostam® ), is the main treatment for leishmaniasis, a complex of diseases caused by the protozoan Leishmania, and an endemic and neglected threat in Brazil. Despite over half a century of clinical use, their mechanism of action, toxicity and pharmacokinetic data remain unknown. The analytical methods for determination of antimony in biological systems remain complex and have low sensitivity. Radiotracer studies have a potential in pharmaceutical development. The aim of this study was to obtain a radiotracer for antimony, with suitable physical and biological properties. Meglumine antimoniate was neutron irradiated inside the IEA-R1 nuclear reactor, producing two...

Evaluation of trace metals (cadmium, chromium, copper and zinc) in tissues of a commercially important fish (Leporinus obtusidens) from Guaíba Lake, Southern Brazil BABT
Costa,Silene de Carvalho; Hartz,Sandra Maria.
Concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu and Zn were determined in liver and muscle of Leporinus obtusidens. During 2003, the fishes (N = 54) were sampled from three sites along Guaíba Lake (north, central and south zones). The hypotheses tested assumed that there were differences in the location and date as to levels of contamination, association between the trace metal content in the fishes and size, and that the sex influenced metal accumulation. Possible risks of contaminated fish consumption to human health were also evaluated. The level of mean concentration (µg/g) of metals in tissues was higher in liver than muscle: [Cd] = 2.32♂; [Cr] = 0.08♀; [Cu] = 30.82♀ and [Zn] = 97.77♀. The results showed differences between the local and date sampling for all metals...

Comparison of different methodologies for DNA extraction from Aegla longirostri BABT
Bitencourt,João Vitor Trindade; Roratto,Paula Angélica; Bartholomei-Santos,Marlise Ladvocat; Santos,Sandro.
The aim of this study was to compare some DNA extraction methodologies for Aegla longirostri. The protocols were based on the traditional phenol-chloroform DNA extraction methodology and using a commercial kit for DNA extraction. They differed in tissues used, the addition - or not - of beta-mercaptoethanol to the lysis buffer, times and methods for the animal's conservation (frozen, in ethanol or fresh). Individuals stored at -20°C for a long time supplied lower molecular weight DNA than those stored for a short time. The best yield for the specimens preserved in ethanol was obtained for 15 days storage in 95% ethanol. The kit resulted in a low quantity of high molecular weight DNA. The best protocol for DNA extraction from Aeglidae, and probably for...

Seafood as functional food BABT
Soccol,Marcilene C. Heidmann; Oetterer,Marília.
Functional food presents specific physiological properties, supplies nutrients and can be naturally found in formulated food or added to it. Seafood plays an important role in human diet, representing the largest stock available of w-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA). Scientific researchers have intensified their studies on fatty acids due to their importance in preventing and/or curing diseases, especially cardiovascular and inflammatory ones. This review describes the most important aspects of w-3 fatty acids found in fish, as well as their roles in the mechanism involved in the prevention and control of diseases.

Genome-Wide Assessment of Putative Superoxide Dismutases in Unicellular and Filamentous Cyanobacteria BABT
Prajapati,Rajesh; Yadav,Shivam; Mitra,Sonali; Rai,Priya; Mishra,Rajeev; Atri,Neelam.
Abstract Cyanobacteria are photoautotrophic prokaryotes capable to grow in diverse ecological habitats, originated 2.5-3.5 billion years ago and were first to produce oxygen. Since then superoxide dismutases (SOD) acquired great significance due to their ability to catalyze detoxification of byproducts of oxygenic photosynthesis i.e. superoxide radicals. In the present study, we extracted information regarding SODs from species of sequenced cyanobacteria and investigated their diversity, conservation, domain structure, and evolution. 144 putative SOD homologs were identified. Unlike other protein families (ex. serine-threonine kinases) SODs are present in all cyanobacterial species reflecting their significant role in survival. However, their distribution...

Use of fish waste as silage: a review BABT
Arruda,Lia Ferraz de; Borghesi,Ricardo; Oetterer,Marília.
The use of fish silage as a substitute for protein ingredients in rations for aquatic organisms is an alternative to solve sanitary and environmental problems caused by the lack of adequate disposition for the waste from the fish industry. Besides, it is also a way of decreasing feeding costs, and, consequently, fish production costs, since feeding corresponds to about 60% of the overall expenses with production. The objective of this review was to discuss the use of fish waste, the elaboration of chemical silage and the use of this ingredient in feed for aquaculture.
