ABSTRACT: Blackberry vinegar was produced in successive acetification cycles and content of total phenolics, anthocyanins and antioxidant activity were evaluated along the production. Firstly, blackberry wine was obtained in bench-scale bioreactor, being verified 0.39 g/g ethanol yield, 1.78 g/L.h volumetric productivity and 76% efficiency. After, three successive acetification cycles were conducted efficiently in grapia barrel with average acetic acid production of 51.6 g/L, 72.2 % acetic acid yield and 0.4 g/L.h volumetric productivity. Appreciable contents of polyphenolic compounds, anthocyanins and high antioxidant activity were observed in the raw material, wine and vinegar obtained in each cycle of acetic acid transformation. Acetic acid... |

The Piraquara river basin (Upper Iguaçu River basin - Brazil) was studied as an ecological system throughout a complete seasonal cycle, comprising the rainy and dry season. Analyzes of 16 physical and chemical water variables (dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, temperature, pH, conductivity, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, ortophosphates, nitrite, nitrate, ammonium, reagent silicate, total suspended solids, chlorophyll - a, flow velocity and depth) showed correlations between water composition and watershed physiographic features, and the Principal Component Analysis allowed to evidence spatial gradients and seasonal differences. The sampling points were clustered in patches with homogeneous behavior, according to ecologycal concepts: patch 1,... |

In this work we developed an extension of IsaViz software, a RDF (Resource Description Framework) authoring tool, designed to be a graphical environment to build models of metabolic and regulatory networks. This environment, called Metabolic IsaViz, was linked to a genomic library of types and was modeled on the basis of ontologies. Biochemical pathways included data at sequence level (e.g., the amino acid sequence of enzymes), besides kinetic and thermodynamic parameters for the reactions. Models created with Metabolic IsaViz could be exported to pathways simulators through SBML (Systems Biology Markup Language), which allowed to analyze the pathway dynamics of target chemicals. |

The aim of this work was to study the production of compounds with antioxidant activity by Pycnoporus sanguineus when cultivated in submerged fermentation using a potato dextrose broth plus peptone medium. The study evaluated the biomass production, glucose consumption, variation of medium pH and antioxidant activity. The antioxidant potential was tested through the DPPH method and β-carotene / linoleic acid system with extracts obtained from the mycelium at different times of cultivation (5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 days). Maximum kinetic values of specific growth rate (0.289 day-1), biomass productivity (0.698 g.L-1.day-1) and the yield of glucose conversion into biomass (26.24 g.g-1) were obtained during the exponential growth phase. The highest... |

Pentavalent antimony, as meglumine antimoniate (Glucantime® ) or sodium stibogluconate (Pentostam® ), is the main treatment for leishmaniasis, a complex of diseases caused by the protozoan Leishmania, and an endemic and neglected threat in Brazil. Despite over half a century of clinical use, their mechanism of action, toxicity and pharmacokinetic data remain unknown. The analytical methods for determination of antimony in biological systems remain complex and have low sensitivity. Radiotracer studies have a potential in pharmaceutical development. The aim of this study was to obtain a radiotracer for antimony, with suitable physical and biological properties. Meglumine antimoniate was neutron irradiated inside the IEA-R1 nuclear reactor, producing two... |

Abstract Cyanobacteria are photoautotrophic prokaryotes capable to grow in diverse ecological habitats, originated 2.5-3.5 billion years ago and were first to produce oxygen. Since then superoxide dismutases (SOD) acquired great significance due to their ability to catalyze detoxification of byproducts of oxygenic photosynthesis i.e. superoxide radicals. In the present study, we extracted information regarding SODs from species of sequenced cyanobacteria and investigated their diversity, conservation, domain structure, and evolution. 144 putative SOD homologs were identified. Unlike other protein families (ex. serine-threonine kinases) SODs are present in all cyanobacterial species reflecting their significant role in survival. However, their distribution... |

The aim of this work was to evaluate the mesenchymal stem cells treatment of rats with myonecrosis caused by Rhinocerophis alternatus venom through acute phase proteins (APP) profile. The animals were distributed into three experimental groups (G1, G2 and G3). G1 and G2 were inoculated with 120 μg of R. alternatus venom diluted in 200 µL of ultra-pure water in gastrocnemic muscle, while G3 received 200 µL of ultra-pure water. Three days after, G1 was treated with 5 X 10(6) MSC diluted in PBS and G2 and G3 only with PBS. Each three days after the treatments (3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th 15th days), blood of five animals in each group was collected in order to evaluate the APP. A decrease (P<0.05) in α2-globulin fraction was observed in G1 on the 6th day. In G1... |

Enterolobium contortisiliquum (Vell.) Morong. is a Mimosaceae tropical tree species recommended for heterogeneous reforestation of degraded tropical areas. "Timburi" seeds present low germination due to the high degree of seed dormancy. Different methods to overcome seed dormancy was compared: sanding, sanding followed by 24 hours water (25ºC) soaking, imbibition in boiling water followed by exposure to water at room temperature (28ºC), and concentrated sulfuric acid (5, 15, 30, 60, 120 or 180 minutes) followed by washing with tap water. All seeds were germinated in rolled towels at 25ºC and 12 hours photoperiod. Total germination, first count of germination test and germination velocity index were recorded. Mechanical scarification (sanding), chemical... |
