Miocene freshwater Mollusca from western Brazilian Amazonia Naturalis
Wesselingh, F.P.; Ranzi, A.; Räsänen, M.E..
Thirteen species of fossil molluscs are reported from the Solimões Formation of western Brazilian Amazonia. Based on mammalian chronology of the Solimões Formation and radiometric ages reported from coeval deposits in adjacent Peru, the age of the fauna is established as Late Miocene. The fauna includes five prosobranch gastropod species, seven pearly freshwater mussel species and one sphaeriid bivalve species. The supposed presence of Pachydon (Corbulidae: Bivalvia) in these deposits is rejected; Pachydon acreanum, whose status has long been uncertain, is transferred to the unionoid genus Callonaia. The Solimões mollusc fauna is entirely composed of obligate freshwater taxa, resembling species-poor modern Amazonian fluvial faunas. The presence of the...

The land Mollusca of Dominica (Lesser Antilles), with notes on some enigmatic or rare species Naturalis
Robinson, D.G.; Hovestadt, A.; Fields, A.; Breure, A.S.H..
An overview of the land-snail fauna of the Lesser Antillean island of Dominica is given, based on data from literature and four recent surveys. There are 42 taxa listed, of which the following species are recorded for the first time from the island: Allopeas gracile (Hutt on, 1834), A. micra (d’Orbigny, 1835), Beckianum beckianum (L. Pfeiffer, 1846), Bulimulus diaphanus fraterculus (Potiez & Michaud, 1835), Deroceras laeve (Müller, 1774), Sarasinula marginata (Semper, 1885), Streptostele musaecola (Morelet, 1860) and Veronicella sloanii (Cuvier, 1817). The enigmatic Bulimulus stenogyroides Guppy, 1868 is now placed in the genus Naesiotus Albers, 1850. Helicina epistilia Guppy, 1868 is now considered a synonym of H. platychila (Megerle von Mühlfeld,...

Correlation of Albian European and Tethyan ammonite zonations and the boundaries of the Albian Stage and substages: some comments Naturalis
Owen, H.G..
Although the so-called ‘standard’ ammonite zonation of the Albian contains index species which occur in the Tethyan province, the scheme largely reflects the faunal succession in the European faunal province with its endemic sonneratiinid and hoplitinid faunal elements. Workers in the Tethyan province, stretching from South America in the west to Australia in the east, including southern Africa, Madagascar and India, face problems in the correlation of their successions with this so-called ‘standard’ scheme. There are other problems in that the succession of hoplitinid ammonites used in the biostratigraphy of European Albian sediments allows a far more detailed zonation to be made than in the case of some of the longer time-ranging Tethyan forms. This...

Variation in Cavolinia inflexa (Lesueur, 1813) (Gastropoda: Pteropoda: Euthecosomata) Naturalis
Spoel, S. van der; Pierrot-Bults, A.C..
Cavolinia inflexa (Lesueur, 1813) proves not to be composed of subspecies or formae, or to show clinal variation. Maximum shell length varies between 4 and 7 mm, shell width between 2 and 4 mm, length/width ratio between 0.51 and 0.81. A geographic pattern in the occurrence of different length/width ratios, on which the subdivision of this species was always based in literature, could not be found. Frequency analyses of length for all samples combined did not show subdivision in local populations and length/width ratios over all samples did show only a pattern of shell growth. There is no valid ground for the subdivision of the species into different taxa.

Notes on a few Opisthobranch Mollusca from Surinam (Guianas) Naturalis
Nijssen-Meyer, J..
The Opisthobranchs dealt with in this paper were entrusted to me by Dr. C. O. van Regteren Altena, Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden, and belong to that museum. They are part of a large collection of marine molluscs from Surinam of which Dr. van Regteren Altena intends to publish an annotated catalogue. The material was preserved rather badly, e.g. 3 specimens of Bornella calcarata had dried out and were hard and stiff. No descriptions or colour-notes on the living animals were available. These appear to be the first Opisthobranchs recorded from the Guianas. The drawings illustrating this paper were made by Mr. Jos Ruting, artist at the Zoological Museum at Amsterdam. Streptaxidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Pulmonata) of the Seychelles Islands, Western Indian Ocean Naturalis
Gerlach, J.; Bruggen, A.C. van.
The taxonomy of the species of the terrestrial carnivorous snail family Streptaxidae of the Seychelles archipelago is reviewed with the exception of the three species of the genus Priodiscus (vide Gerlach, 1995). All 18 species are restricted to the northern, granitic islands. This paper describes 15 species, including two new genera (Silhouettia and Careoradula), and four new subspecies (Edentulina dussumieri reservae, E. d. silhouettae, E. d. praslina, Stereostele nevilli parvidentata). The nominal taxon Streptaxis (Imperturbatia) constans var. silhouettae is raised to species level to become the type species of the new genus Silhouettia. The type species of Careoradula is Streptaxis (Imperturbatia) perelegans. Anatomical descriptions and figures are...

Something gone awry: unsolved mysteries in the evolution of asymmetric animal genitalia Naturalis
Schilthuizen, M..
The great diversity in genital shape and function across and within the animal phyla hamper the identification of specific evolutionary trends that stretch beyond the limits of the group under study. Asymmetry might be a trait in genital morphology that could play a unifying role in the evolutionary biology of genitalia. Here, I review the current knowledge on the taxonomic distribution, phylogenetic patterns, genetics, development, and ecology of asymmetric (chiral) genitalia. Asymmetric genitalia (male as well as female) have evolved from bilaterally symmetric ones (and sometimes vice versa), innumerous times in most animal taxa with internal fertilisation, and especially in Platyhelminthes, Arthropoda, Nematoda, and Chordata. In groups with asymmetric...

On Idyla pelobsoleta spec. nov. (Mollusca: Gastropoda Pulmonata: Clausiliidae), and insularity in the molluscan fauna of the highest parts of the Parnon Oros, Peloponnisos, Greece Naturalis
Gittenberger, E..
An annotated check-list concerning the molluscan fauna of the two highest peaks in the Parnon Oros, Peloponnisos, Greece, is provided, with emphasis on distributional data. The localities reported upon are situated only 15 km apart. Nevertheless, they are quite different in species composition. From one of these isolated peaks and from a second locality in another mountain range, Idyla pelobsoleta spec, nov., is described. The insular character of the two Parnon peaks, especially with regard to their clausiliid species, is emphasized.

Simplistrigilla in the western Atlantic Ocean (Mollusca, Bivalvia) Naturalis
Boss, K.J..
In a recent monograph on the tellinid genus Strigilla, the absence of a representative of the subgenus Simplistrigilla was noted in the Western Atlantic region (Boss, 1969). Simplistrigilla was described by Olsson (1961) with the species S. strata Olsson, 1961, as type. The species is rare with a considerable range in the Panamic Province of the eastern Pacific Ocean, occurring from El Lagartillo, Panama, southward to Punta Blanca, Ecuador. The unusual feature possessed by this species is in the nature of the scissulae or oblique incised lines which descend across the shell from the anterior dorsal margin toward the ventral and posterior margins. In S. strata these scissulations do not change direction or form a complex of flexures along the posterior...

Two more Menkia species (Mollusca: Gastropoda Prosobranchia: Aciculidae) Naturalis
Gittenberger, E..
Two recent Menkia species are described as new to science, viz. M. dewinteri. and M. rolani. The generic diagnosis is adjusted and a revised identification key, as well as a new distribution map are given for the four Menkia species known at present. A peculiar microsculpture of unknown taxonomic relevance is described and illustrated for shells of the three recent Menkia species.

On Trochoidea geyeri (Soós, 1926) and some conchologically similar taxa (Mollusca: Gastropoda Pulmonata: Hygromiidae) Naturalis
Gittenberger, E..
To provide background information for a proposal to the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature to suppress five subjective senior synonyms of Trochoidea geyeri, the synonymies of this and some other hygromiid species are given. The nominal taxa that are dealt with concern species that are conchologically more or less similar. These species were studied to minimize the risk that even more unused senior synonyms of T. geyeri would be discovered, which would require an additional ruling of the Commission. Distributional data and short conchological diagnoses are added to increase the usefulness of the present paper.

Intraspecific morphological and genetic variability in the European freshwater snail Radix labiata (Rossmaessler, 1835) (Gastropoda: Basommatophora: Lymnaeidae) Naturalis
Schniebs, K.; Glöer , P.; Vinarski, M.V.; Hundsdoerfer, A.K..
Radix labiata is a widely distributed Palaearctic freshwater snail. This work aims to improve the knowledge of the intraspecific variability in the most important characters used for its determination. To find out which characters are really suitable to distinguish this species from other similar Radix species an integrative approach was applied, involving morphological and molecular data.Molecular sequences of the nuclear spacer fragment ITS-2 and/or the mitochondrial gene fragment cyt-b were obtained from 26 individuals of R. labiata from different regions of Europe, including type localities of Limnaeus pereger labiatus. From the subsample of 24 specimens of which sequences of both gene fragments were available, the variability of several characters...
