1. During 1989 an estimated total of 4,391.7mt of fish was landed on Mahe, Praslin and La Digue by 390 fishing boats, (including sport fishing boats), 81.2% of which was landed on Mahe alone. The volume of catch does not differ significantly from 1988, but the number of boats has decreased, being a decrease in the number of small boats and schooners, whilst whalers using handlines have increased. 2. The most important species groups landed (greater than 5% of the total catch) were carangues (32.0%), job (9.6%), red snapper (9.1%), capitaine (7.0%), maquereau doux (6.7%), and trap fishes (cordonier 5.6%, others 5.0%), and bonite (5.3%). 3. The variation in monthly landings was not as pronounced as in previous years. Peak landings occurred in April... |

The development of the small scale marine fisheries in Tanzania is influenced by conditions in the other sectors of the economy. The artisanal fisheries are particularly sensitive to the general conditions of the economy. The small scale fisheries sector (artisanal fisheries) plays a role that has devolved upon agriculture. Generally, the sector is characterised by underemployment, low incomes, retarded technology and low labour skills as a result of the dual nature of the economy. This paper outlines the major constraints hindering the development of the small scale fisheries of the marine sector in Tanzania and provides tentative development policies for the upgrading of artisanal fisheries through improvement of catch, distribution and marketing. |

During 2007, a total of 4184 MT of fish was landed on Mahé, Praslin and La Digue by approximately 351 fishing boats. 87% of the total catch was landed on Mahé. The total artisanal catch increased by 344MT compared to 2006, whilst the number of boats operating increased by only 6 units over the same period (excluding sport fishing vessels). The most important species groups landed (greater than 5% of the total catch) were bourgeois (25.7%), carangues (18.7%), job (15.7%), macquereau doux (7.5%), and cordonnier (5.1%). Peak landings occurred in November (612.8 MT) and the lowest in June (211.3 MT), the latter period coinciding with the Southeast (SE) Trades and sea states not conducive to fishing. The average monthly catch in 2007 was 348.4 MT, representing... |

OBJECTIVES: The present study was conducted to evaluate the socio_economic status of Seychelles fishing community in order to provide a foundation for formulation of rational management and policy decisions relating to the artisanal fishing sector. ANALYSIS: The data generated were analysed by boat - type, and by analytical strata thus: Crew, All skippers, skipper-owners with a loan, skipper-owners without a loan, share skippers (non boat owners). SURVEY COVERAGE: 300 interviews were conducted on the islands of Mahe, Praslin and La Digue, of which 112 were crew members and 188 were skippers. It was estimated that the skippers of 60.3% of all full-time fishing boats were interviewed. The coverage was greater for schooners (100%) and whalers (71.6%) than... |

Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority. |
Challenges the fishing ports of Ghana, notably Sekondi Port include the congestion and the deteriorating efficiency due to the increase of users and decreasing quality of catch due to the shortage and ageing of landing facilities, fish handling sheds and ice-making facilities. The Government of Ghana made a request to Japan for an extension of the wharf, construction of additional breakwater, cold storage and ice-making facility at Sekondi Fishing Port in 2010 in order to overcome these challenges. In response the Government of Japan conducted a survey for the project to promote efficiency and improvement of Ghana's fishery sector. The survey was to examine the need, relevance and urgency of the proposed project. |
