Community structure and intertidal zonation of the macrobenthos on a macrotidal, ultra-dissipative beach were studied. On the beach of De Panne, Belgium, six transects perpendicular to the waterline (each with five stations) were sampled in September 1995 (summer) and March 1996 (winter). The 30 stations were distributed across the continuum from mean high water spring to mean low water spring in order to sample the macrobenthos at different levels of elevation. The 39 species found had total densities up to 5,500 ind m-2 in summer and 1,400 ind m-2 in winter. The highest densities were found in the spionid polychaetes <i>Scolelepis squamata</i> and <i>Spio filicornis</i>, the nephtyid... |

In many cases maintenance dredging in harbors and access channels could be much cheaper and easier if the deposited mud could be pumped using fixed equipment. Therefore the feasibility of pumping fluid mud was examined. It is found that homogeneous mud can be pumped efficiently up to densities of 1150 kgm-3 (for the Zeebrugge (Belgium) mud). For higher densities the influence radius of the pumps becomes very small. A 1-D model can be used to determine the static equilibrium slope and the equilibrium profile of the mud-water interface. Layered mud deposits are more difficult to remove by pumping, since after each pumping cycle a layer of mud remains. As a consequence, layered mud deposits must be homogenized before pumping. This can... |

Responsibility for waste materials since the 1980 Belgian State reforms has been a regional matter and is vested for the Flemish Region in the OVAM (Openbare Afvalstoffenmaatschappij voor het Vlaamse gewest-Public Waste Company for the Flemish Region). The collection and processing of animal waste is governed by the order of the Flemish government of 24 May 1995. The carcasses of the sperm whales, stranded on the coast of Belgium in 1994, were processed into animal feed in a processing facility, approved for animal waste. They were initially regarded as low-risk material. However, it was subsequently found that hazardous material were present in the tissues of the sperm whales, so that high-risk material was involved. Processing the sperm whale into animal... |

Marine fouling causes economical problems. Fouling diminishes the efficiency of propulsion of the ships. It enlarges the cost in fuel. Another effect is the loss in time and money because it necessitates frequent docking of the ships. These organisms increase the corrosion of metal in seawater. The damage to the timber constructions by marine borers causes renewed change of the piles. Therefore information was given about the principal fouling organisms at the Belgian coast. Some biologic aspects of the fouling were reviewed as the biotic succession by the different communities, the relation of fouling growth to local environments, the vertical zonation and the settling behavior of larvae controlled by salinity, temperature and light. |

Primary production parameters (numbers and identifications , pigments, photosynthesis, respiration, excretion) have been measured or estimated in a marine lagoon during 4 years. On the seasonal scale, the succession pattern shows a spring bloom in April-May, a depression in May and a summer bloom from June to August. Various nannoplanktonic flagellates are responsible for these fluctuations, which are well paralleled by photosynthetic capacity variations. Primary production was computed using a light-photosynthesis function. Photosynthetic capacities and function parameters have been determined and discussed. On the diel scale, a strong periodicity involving natural mortality was observed and taken into account. Uptake and regeneration rates of inorganic... |
