Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) infesting cattle and some other domestic and wild hosts on the French Mediterranean island of Corsica ArchiMer
Grech-angelini, Sebastien; Stachurski, Frederic; Lancelot, Renaud; Boissier, Jerome; Allienne, Jean-francois; Marco, Sylvain; Maestrini, Oscar; Uilenberg, Gerrit.
Background: Corsica is a mountainous French island in the north-western Mediterranean presenting a large diversity of natural environments where many interactions between domestic animals and wild fauna occur. Despite a favourable context for ticks and tick-borne diseases (TBDs), the tick fauna of Corsica has not systematically been investigated. Methods: For one year (May 2014-May 2015), a survey of ticks infesting cattle was performed in the three Corsican cattle slaughterhouses. Two of these were visited monthly and one quarterly; the ticks were manually collected, just after flaying. Ticks were identified on their morphology; when necessary, some specimens were also molecularly identified by sequencing mitochondrial cox1 (cytochrome c oxidase subunit...

Ultrastructural Study of Bovine Papillomavirus During Outbreaks in Brazil International Journal of Morphology
Catroxo,M. H. B; Martins,A. M. C. R. P. F; Petrella,S; Souza,F; Nastari,B.D.B.
Papillomaviruses, belonging to the Papillomaviridae family, are small oncogenic viruses, causing papillomas and fibropapillomas in the mucosal and cutaneous epithelia of several animals. In bovine species, thirteen types (BPV 1-13) were characterized to date. In this study, the occurrence of papillomatosis in four outbreaks in cattle herds, coming from Brazilian states were registered. The papillomatous lesions were found located in the teats, udders, head and neck. Under the transmission electron microscope, by the negative staining technique, it was possible to visualized rounded-format papillomavirus, with icosahedral symmetry, characterized as "full" and "empty" particles, measuring on average 60 nm in diameter, in all the 40 samples observed of skin...

ANNUAL VARIATIONS OF THE SODIUM CHANNEL BLOCKING TOXIN IN VENEZUELAN CATTLE PRONE TO DEVELOP THE BOVINE PARAPLEGIC SYNDROME: ITS DEPENDENCE ON RAIN J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
SEVCIK,C.; D'SUZE,G..
A characteristic of the bovine paraplegic syndrome (BPS) is ventral or sternal decubitus in animals that make unsuccessful efforts to stand when stimulated. Death occurs after a few days. In a previous work we showed the existence of a sodium channel blocking toxin (SCBT) produced by ruminal bacteria in cattle with or liable to develop BPS. The presence of SCBT in bovine plasma sampled monthly during the rainy and dry seasons in animals without BPS has now been observed. A positive correlation between rain precipitation and plasma toxin levels (Spearman's rank correlation coefficient=0.457, n=135, p&lt;10<img SRC="http:/img/fbpe/jvat/v4n1/image522.gif"> ) was found. Precipitation was 194 (121-289) mm water/month (n= 162 months in 27 years, median...

Neonatal immune response of Brazilian beef cattle to vaccination with Clostridium botulinum toxoids types C and D by indirect ELISA J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Curci,VCM; Nogueira,AHC; Nobrega,FLC; Araujo,RF; Perri,SHV; Cardoso,TC; Dutra,IS.
Types C and D strains of Clostridium botulinum are commonly related to avian and mammalian botulism. Although there are numerous vaccine recommendations, little research has been conducted to indicate the real effectiveness of vaccine timing or the ideal immunization protocol for young beef calves. Four commercially available vaccines, two bivalent (Clostridium botulinum types C and D; vaccines 1 and 2) and two polyvalent (all Clostridium spp. including Clostridium botulinum types C and D; vaccines 3 and 4), that are currently used in Brazilian herds, were tested in order to verify the maternal immune response. One hundred cows, divided into four vaccinated groups and one unvaccinated group, were given a two-dose subcutaneous immunization, at day zero,...

Malignant catarrhal fever-like lesions associated with ovine herpesvirus-2 infection in young calves (Bos indicus): a case report J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Luvizotto,MCR; Ferrari,HF; Cardoso,TC.
Infection of susceptible ruminants, including domestic cattle (Bos taurus) and American bison (Bison bison), with ovine herpesvirus-2 (OvHV-2) may provoke the fatal vasculitis and lymphoproliferative syndrome, known as malignant catarrhal fever (MCF), reported worldwide. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a clinical case of MCF-like lesions associated with ovine herpesvirus-2 (OvHV-2) infection in young calves (Bos indicus) including central nervous symptoms that occurred in Três Lagoas city, Mato Grosso do Sul state, a border town near São Paulo state, Brazil. The diagnosis was based on typical histological lesions characterized by systemic lymphohistiocytic and fibrinoid vasculitis, confirmed by polymerase chain reaction and...

Interval between first dose and booster affected antibody production in cattle vaccinated against rabies J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Albas,A.; Fontolan,O. L.; Pardo,P. E.; Bremer Neto,H.; Sartori,A..
In this study, we compared the levels of neutralizing antibodies induced by inactivated rabies vaccine in cattle by using three alternative immunization procedures. Forty-five bovines (breed nelore) were then organized in three groups (A, B and C, with 15 animals/group). Group A received only one vaccine dose at day zero and Group B received the first dose at day zero and then another dose at day 30 (early booster). Group C was also immunized with two doses; however, the booster was postponed until day 180 after the first dose (delayed booster). Blood samples were withdrawn at days zero (before the first dose) and 30, 210, 390, and 540 after the beginning of immunization and the antibody titers were evaluated by mouse neutralization test. The protocol used...

Lesions caused by Africanized honeybee stings in three cattle in Brazil J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Caldas,Saulo Andrade; Graça,Flávio Augusto Soares; de Barros,Júlia Soares Monteiro; Rolim,Márcia Farias; Peixoto,Tiago da Cunha; Peixoto,Paulo Vargas.
We report three cases of stings by Africanized bees in cattle in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Erythema, subcutaneous edema, necrosis accompanied by skin detachment, and subsequent skin regeneration were observed, especially on the head and dewlap. Histopathological examinations performed 45 days later revealed complete skin reepithelialization with moderate dermal fibrosis. The clinical picture and differential diagnosis are discussed in the present manuscript, with a focus on photosensitization, which causes cutaneous lesions on the head (sequela) with cicatricial curving of the ears and can be very similar to what is observed in cattle attacked by swarms of bees. The distinction between photosensitization and bee sting lesions can be made with a...

Genotyping of Clostridium perfringens associated with sudden death in cattle J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Miyashiro,S; Baldassi,L; Nassar,AFC.
Toxigenic types of Clostridium perfringens are significant causative agents of enteric disease in domestic animals, although type E is presumably rare, appearing as an uncommon cause of enterotoxemia of lambs, calves and rabbits. We report herein the typing of 23 C. perfringens strains, by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique, isolated from small intestine samples of bovines that have died suddenly, after manifesting or not enteric or neurological disorders. Two strains (8.7%) were identified as type E, two (8.7%) as type D and the remainder as type A (82.6%). Commercial toxoids available in Brazil have no label claims for efficacy against type E-associated enteritis; however, the present study shows the occurrence of this infection. Furthermore,...

Association between handling stress in the corral and rabies antibody titers in selenium-supplemented cattle J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Reis,LSLS; Chiacchio,SB; Oba,E; Pardo,PE; Frazatti-Gallina,NM.
This study determined the correlation between serum cortisol levels and rabies antibody titers in cattle primo-vaccinated against rabies and supplemented with dietary selenium (Se). Sixty Nelore male calves (10 to 12 months old) received daily and individual dietary supplementation with 0, 3.6, 5.4 and 6.4 mg Se (groups Gc, G3.6, G5.4 and G6.4, respectively). The animals were vaccinated against rabies (day 0) and subjected to handling stress in the corral for 120 days. Blood sampling procedures were performed on days 0, 15, 30, 60, 90 and 120. Cortisol levels increased until day 90, but had dropped significantly by day 120 (P < 0.01). Rabies antibody titers on days 30 and 90 were similar among Se-supplemented groups; in the control group, rabies...

Species-specificity of a Panel of Prion Protein Antibodies for the Immunohistochemical Study of Animal and Human Prion Diseases OAK
Furuoka, Hidefumi; Yabuzoe, Atushi; Horiuchi, Motohiro; Tagawa, Yuichi; Yokoyama, Takashi; Yamakawa, Yoshio; Shinagawa, Morikazu; Sata, Tetsutaro.
Monoclonal antibodies to the prion protein (PrP) have been of critical importance in the neuropathological characterization of PrP-related disease in men and animals. To determine the influence of species-specific amino-acid substitutions recognized by monoclonal antibodies, and to investigate the immunohistochemical reactivity of the latter, analyses were carried out on brain sections of cattle with bovine spongiform encephalopathy, sheep with scrapie, mice infected with scrapie, and human beings with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) or Gerstmann-Sträussler-Sheinker disease (GSS). Immunoreactivity varied between the antibodies, probably as the result of differences in the amino-acid sequence of the prion protein in the various species. Some monoclonal...

Bovine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder causing congestive heart failure and subsequent death. Recently, a nonsense mutation c.343C>T in the bovine optic atrophy 3 (OPA3) gene had been reported to cause the DCM in Holstein cattle in Switzerland. However, the mutation has not been confirmed in bovine DCM outside Switzerland. Nine Holstein Friesian cows that were macroscopically and histologically diagnosed with or suspected of DCM and 12 control cows kept in Japan were tested for the mutation. The mutation surrounding OPA3 DNA fragment was amplified by PCR and subjected to direct sequences. The homogeneous c.343C>T mutation was proved to occur in all the affected cows and not in the control cows. The present...

A Mechanism of Excessive Accumulation of Abomasal Gas in Vagotomized Cattle Determined using Fluoroscopy OAK
ITOH, Megumi; SASAKI, Naoki; KAWAMOTO, Satoshi; YAMADA, Haruo; INOKUMA, Hisashi; 佐々木, 直樹; 猪熊, 壽.
To better understand the mechanism of excessive gas accumulation in the abomasum in bovine abomasal displacement, we performed gastric fluoroscopy in vagotomized cattle. Fifteen 6-month-old Holstein steers were divided into three groups: a non-vagotomized control group (Group C; n=5), a ventral thoraco-vagotomized group (Group V; n=5), and a dorsal and ventral thoraco-vagotomized group (Group DV; n=5). These groups were examined by fluoroscopy before and during a 5-week observation period after surgery. In Group C, no change was observed throughout the observation period. In Group DV, immediately after surgery, reticuloruminal motility was completely absent and ruminal distention was seen. Two weeks after surgery, abnormal reticulum motility and increased...
