A new spelaeogriphacean (Crustacea: Peracarida) from the Upper Jurassic of China Naturalis
Yan-bin, Shen; Taylor, Rod S.; Schram, Frederick R..
A new monotypic genus of Spelaeogriphacea is described from the Upper Jurassic of Liaoning Province, north-east China. This new genus and species brings the number of known spelaeogriphacean taxa to four, the others being two recent forms from Brazil and South Africa, and one from the Carboniferous of eastern Canada. The new Chinese form is morphologically (and phylogenetically) very similar to the recent spelaeogriphaceans, suggesting that the body plan seen in the recent Spelaeogriphacea was achieved relatively early in the history of the group. A cladistic analysis of this and several other peracaridan orders indicates that the Spelaeogriphacea may be a paraphyletic group. This suggests that much work remains to be done with respect to the taxonomy and...

Copepods from intertidal interstitial water of Salvador, Brazil. I. Cuipora janaina gen. n., sp. n. & Cyclopina caiala sp. n. (Cyclopoida: Cyclopinidae) Naturalis
Lotufo, Guilherme Ribeiro; Falavigna da Rocha, Carlos Eduardo.
Cuipora janaina gen. n., sp. n., and Cyclopina caiala sp. n. are described from the interstitial water of a sandy beach in Salvador, Bahia (Brazil). Cuipora is distinguished from all other genera of the subfamily Cyclopininae in having the endopodite of legs 1-4 2-segmented and the terminal segment armed with 4 setae. Cuipora is compared to Erythropolites Huys & Boxshall, 1990, Herbstina Huys & Boxshall, 1990, and Cyclopina Claus, 1862, with which it has most morphological similarities. Cyclopina caiala sp. n. is distinguished by the structure of the leg 5 of the male and female and by a particular combination of characters of the mouthparts. Taxonomical problems involving Cylopina mediterranea Steuer, 1940 are discussed.

A new species of Pseudoniphargus (Crustacea, Amphipoda) from subterranean water of northeastern Morocco: Historical biogeography and evolutionary aspects Naturalis
Abiari, A. Fakher el; Oulbaz, Z.; Messouli, M.; Coineau, N..
A new species of Pseudoniphargus, P. longiflagellum (Crustacea, Amphipoda) is described from subterranean fresh water of the Riftan region of Morocco. This species is closely related to the group P. ruffoi-P. longipes, which shares several apomorphic characters. The two-step model of colonization and evolution provides an understanding of the origin and the age of this stygobiont. P. longiflagellum is derived from marine ancestors that lived in the coastal groundwater of the Tethyan South-Rifian channel during the Miocene Tortonian period. The regression of this corridor during the late Tortonian period or at the beginning of the Messinian period may have played a major role in the evolutionary history through vicariance.

Elemental analysis of Scottish populations of the ectoparasitic copepod Lepeophtheirus salmonis Naturalis
Shinn, A.P.; Bron, J.E.; Gray, D.J.; Sommerville, C..
Conventional nebulisation ICPMS (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry), was used to determine the concentration of a broad range of elements in the salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis. Lice samples were collected from Atlantic salmon in seven localities (4 fish farms and 3 wild salmon fisheries) on two separate sampling occasions and prepared for analysis. Sixty six elements were measured, 35 of these were found to be variable and were subjected to univariate and multivariate statistical analysis. The results of the single element comparisons showed that not all individual sites could be discriminated from each other. Sea lice collected from cultured salmonids could be discriminated from those on wild salmonids at the same site using the elements...
