THE INFLUENCE OF ATTRIBUTE CUTOFFS ON CONSUMERS’ CHOICES OF A FUNCTIONAL FOOD AgEcon
Ding, Yulian; Veeman, Michele M.; Adamowicz, Wiktor L..
This study investigates evidence of non-compensatory preferences by incorporating attribute cutoffs into the modeling of consumer choices in the context of food with health-related attributes (omega-3 content) that may be associated with fortification or may result from genetic modification (GM). Data for this study were collected through a nation-wide internet-based survey drawn from a representative panel of Canadian households maintained by a major North American marketing firm. In addition to querying respondents on their perceptions and attitudes regarding food and health, choices of canola oils are elicited using a stated choice experiment in which product alternatives are identified based on attributes of price, country of origin, omega-3 content...

THE LINK BETWEEN FARMGATE AND WORLD PRICES IN THE WAKE OF TRADE LIBERALIZATION: THE CASE OF COLOMBIA AgEcon
Jaramillo, Carlos Felipe; Nupia, Oskar Andres.
The study measures the extent to which farmgate price levels have effectively increased their degree of integration with world price movements following trade liberalization in Columbia. Results show that the extent of integration varies greatly depending upon the crop, and that market-specific policies have isolated some farmers from international influences.

‘GMO-Free’ Labels – Enhancing Transparency or Deceiving Consumers? AgEcon
Henseleit, Meike; Kubitzki, Sabine.
Since most consumers particularly in industrialised countries are concerned about the application of genetic engineering in food production, producers in many nations got the opportunity to label products as free of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) by the introduction of legal regulations. Standards of these regulations for labelling food products ‘GMO-free’ usually relate to product itself, not to the process of production. Therefore, it is quite possible that consumers’ understanding of ‘GMO-free’ differs from what the label actually stands for, especially regarding animal products. We conducted a consumer survey in order to explore potential gaps between their ideas of ‘GMO-free’ food and what the label actually stands for at the example of the...

IMPACT OF SPATIAL PRICE DISCRIMINATION WITHIN FLORIDA DAIRY COOPERATIVES AgEcon
Nubern, Christopher A.; Kilmer, Richard L..
The trend toward deregulation and the relatively high prices in the Florida milk market have increased competition for milk supplies between Florida dairy cooperatives (FDCs) and other cooperatives like Dairymen Incorporated and Southern Milk Sales. Because of the increased competition in the Florida markets, the FDCs may need to implement a discriminatory spatial pricing policy. The discriminatory pricing policy allows the FDCs to expand their membership by absorbing some of the transportation cost of producers in distant locations that would otherwise be independent producers or members of competing cooperatives. Spatial pricing policies are analyzed to determine the effects of discriminatory pricing on the blend price, average aggregate revenue of...

EXCHANGE RATES AND THE MEASUREMENT OF AGRICULTURAL PRICE DISTORTIONS IN CEECs AND OF CEEC-EU ACCESSION COSTS AgEcon
Bojnec, Stefan; Munch, Wolfgang; Swinnen, Johan F.M..
Exchange rates were heavily distorted under the central planning system in Central and Eastern Europe and are still adjusting in the transition process. The use of nominal exchange rates introduces a bias for international price comparisons and in calculations based on them. We present various exchange rates and discuss their relevance and usefulness for CEEC economic transition studies. We show that calculations of agricultural price distortions, protection rates and budgetary costs of EU-CEEC accession are sensitive to the exchange rate assumptions. More specifically, our simulations of EU-CEEC integration effects show that net exports are substantially smaller and budgetary costs less under the assumption of continued real appreciation of the CEC-4...

ISSUES OF DEMAND SPECIFICATION AND INDUSTRY STRUCTURE IN TURKEYS AND BROILER CHICKENS AgEcon
Cheney, Laura Martin; Brown, A. Blake; Yamano, Takashi; Masterovsky, Michael.
Factors unique to the turkey industry suggest that conclusions concerning market structure and demand specification drawn from aggregate poultry data cannot necessarily be extrapolated to the turkey industry. The Wu-Hausman endogeneity test is used to examine demand specifications and industry structure specifically for turkey meat. In contrast to general poultry, quantity-not price-is found to be predetermined in demand models that use annual turkey data. Quarterly demand analysis suggests this result stems from biological cycles that limit a producer's ability to react to price change and the use of a weighted average for determining price and quantity.

The Impact of Gasoline Prices on Internet Purchases AgEcon
Martens, Andrea.
The proposition of a carbon tax has reinvigorated the discussion about the price elasticity of gasoline demand. This paper analyzes how consumers react to higher gas prices in a new setting, examining whether they choose Internet purchasing over in-store purchasing when gas prices increase. Prior studies of Internet purchases have focused mainly on local sales tax rates, traditional retail options, and prices. This is the first study to incorporate transportation costs directly, studying 155,000 households across the U.S. from 2008 through 2009. The impact of gas prices on individuals' transportation budget depends on the fuel efficiency of their vehicles, on the distance that they need to drive, and on the availability of alternate public transportation...

Can German Wine Cooperatives Compete on Quality? AgEcon
Schamel, Guenter.
The German Agricultural Society (DLG) manages a multi-round annual quality control scheme where wines undergo a blind, sensory testing procedure using a 5-point scale to determine superior quality wines worthy of an annual award (Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Gold Extra). We develop a hedonic model for the 2005 award competition estimating implicit prices for different product attributes including sensory awards, quality categories, and wine style. We also control for regional origin, variety, color, and age. To discern the impact of ownership structure, we distinguish cooperatives and private wineries. Silver and Bronze awards show significant price effects relative to Gold. We also estimate highly significant price effects between quality categories (e.g....

PRICE AND VALUE EFFECTS OF PECAN CROP FORECASTS, 1971-1987 AgEcon
Shafer, Carl E..
Price equations incorporating USDA October crop forecasts and June pecan stocks provided reasonable formulations for pecan price explanation and forecasting. USDA crop forecasts exceeded final reported production in 12 of the 18 seasons from 1970 to 1987, probably resulting in slightly lower prices and crop values. Large crop forecast errors in both direction and level in 1986 and 1987 confounded the price determination process. Nevertheless, producer prices may have been lower absent the October crop forecasts, which somewhat reduce buyers' uncertainty regarding supply. Early crop estimates provided a better explanation of price behavior than postseason revised production data.

DEMAND DRIVERS FOR FRESH-CUT FLOWERS AND THEIR SUBSTITUTES: AN APPLICATION OF HOUSEHOLD EXPENDITURE ALLOCATION MODELS AgEcon
Girapunthong, Napaporn; Ward, Ronald W..
Flowers are purchased for a variety of reasons ranging from expressions of love or sympathy to satisfying environmental and beautification goals. Unlike many foods where some of the attributes can be quantitatively measured such as grams of fat in meats and milligrams of cholesterol in fluid milk, these aesthetically pleasing products present an array of attributes that are closely tied to the buyer’s reasons for making the purchase. Clearly the attributes are fundamentally different since the goal associated with the purchase depends on the buyer’s objectives. This also implies that the demand for such products should be much more closely tied to the characteristics for the buyers and the reasons for buying. Flowers are not absolutely essential for...

A Censored Demand System Analysis of Fruits and Vegetables by Different Income Groups Using Micro Data AgEcon
Niu, Luyuan; Wohlgenant, Michael K..
This study examines demand for fruits and vegetables segmented by income levels in a complete demand system framework using the Consumer Expenditure Survey (CEX) from 2002 to 2006. Results show that disparities are found between high-income households and low-income households. Seasonal effects and demographic variables, such as household heads’ race and gender, region, household size and household composition, play an important role in fruit and vegetable consumption for both categories of household. In contrast, urban status, household heads’ educational level and age are not found to have a statistically significant impact for low-income households. Conditional price elasticities indicate that processed fruits and vegetables, fresh fruits and fresh...

Examining long-run relationships between Australian beef prices AgEcon
Chang, Hui-Shung (Christie); Griffith, Garry R..
Cointegration and impulse response analyses are used to investigate the short‐run and long‐run dynamics of the Australian beef market. The aim of this study is to determine whether long‐run relationships existed between Australian beef prices at the farm, wholesale and retail levels. Based on monthly data from 1971 to 1994, the results show that all three prices considered are cointegrated. Furthermore, the wholesale price is found to be weakly exogenous. The latter result might be an indication of market inefficiency due in part to price levelling often practised in the beef marketing system.

Cotton Futures Dynamics: Structural Change, Index Traders and the Returns to Storage AgEcon
Power, Gabriel J.; Robinson, John R.C..
The commodity bull cycle of 2006-2008 and subsequent dramatic price decline have been a source of hardship for traditional commodity market participants such as producers and merchant/shippers. The usefulness of futures markets has been called into question, especially given that some market movements did not appear to be justified by economic fundamentals. An emerging research literature examines the possible influence of futures traders, and particularly the non-traditional Index Traders, on the well-functioning of futures markets and underlying commodity markets. Cotton is a relatively under-studied commodity that is of particular importance for producers in the South and Southwest. To this end, this paper asks the following questions: (1) What role...

EQUILIBRIUM VERSUS DISEQUILIBRIUM IN THE MARKET FOR NON-FED CATTLE AgEcon
Ziemer, Rod F.; White, Fred C..
Beef-cow inventory demand is considered in a disequilibrium model of the U.S. live non-fed cattle market. Statistical results indicated the possible presence of disequilibrium prices. However, post-model evaluation indicated that the market for non-fed cattle has not been characterized by significant disequilibrium price behavior.

An Econometric Analysis of Brand Level Strategic Pricing Between Coca Cola and Pepsi Inc. AgEcon
Dhar, Tirtha Pratim; Chavas, Jean-Paul; Cotterill, Ronald W.; Gould, Brian W..
Market structure and strategic pricing for leading brands sold by Coca Cola and Pepsi Inc. are investigated in the context of a flexible demand specification and structural price equations. This approach is more general than prior studies that rely upon linear approximations and interactions of an inherently nonlinear problem. We test for Bertrand equilibrium, Stackelberg equilibrium, collusion, and a general conjectural variation (CV) specification. This nonlinear Full Information Maximum Likelihood (FIML) estimation approach provides useful information on the nature of imperfect competition and the extent of market power.

World Soybean Demand: An Elasticity Analysis and Long-Term Projections AgEcon
Masuda, Tadayoshi; Goldsmith, Peter D..
Soybeans are one of the most valuable crops in the world and are characterized by their multi-purpose uses: food, feed, fuel and other industrial usages such as paint, inks, and plastics. Out of 183.9 million tons of world supply/demand of soybeans in 2001-03 year, about 10% of them were directly consumed as food (5.9%) or feed (3.8%) but 84.2% of them were crushed into soyoil and soymeal. Soyoil is mainly processed to vegetable oil for human consumption and recently used as a biodiesel feedstock. Soymeal is used not only as feed for livestock (especially for pork and poultry due to its low fiber level) and aquaculture, but also as a good source of protein for the human diet in a variety of forms in different cultures. This paper analyzes the...

FORECASTING CLASS III AND CLASS IV MILK PRICES AgEcon
Jesse, Edward V.; Schuelke, Jacob.
Despite the growing volume, trading in milk remains small in comparison to grain and livestock. Part of the reason for limited trading volume is that dairy futures trading is very new compared to grain and livestock trading. There is less experience with risk management strategies and a much smaller research base with respect to basis relationships and price forecasting. Dairy farmers are still "feeling their way." The purpose of this study is to provide a systematic, user-friendly method for forecasting Class III and Class IV prices. The user is allowed to vary regional milk production and stocks of manufactured dairy products to evaluate the sensitivity of point estimates. A sequential process is developed to predict Class III milk prices up to 12...
