Koen Alonso, M..
The comparative analysis of the food habits between top predator allows the evaluation of how these species use the trophic resources. They also make possible the study of potentially competitive relationships and the role of these predators in the regulation and structure of the community. The marine community of northern and central Patagonia is structured on the tri-trophic system composed by the Argentine anchovy (Engraulis anchoita), the Argentine shortfin squid (Illex argentinus), and Argentine hake (Merluccius hubbsi). Several marine mammals and elasmobranchs use these species as food resources. For this reason, the objective of this work was to analyze comparatively the diet of the South American sea lion (Otaria flavescens), the dusky dolphin...

Fraga, I.; Reyes, R.; Ortega, N.; Regueira, E.; Font, R.; Bravo, A..
In order to establish the management methods in snook Centropomus undecimalis (Bloch, 1792) broodstock (initial average weight 960 g), during 18 month three phases were developed. Fishes were marked, measured, weighed and distributed in 5 m3 fiber glass tanks (stock density 1.3 kg/m3). In the first phase (3 month), different feeding schedules were applied: 1. feeding in alternate days; 2. feeding every day excluding weekends; 3. feeding twice a day. Before maturation phase and during three month, enriched semi humid food was supplied. Finally, during 12 month, artificial feed was supplied. The appetite dynamics in fishes was influenced by the feeding schedule applied. When food was offered in alternate days, higher consumption was observed. Females showed...

Alvarez, J.S.; Sorí, M.A.; Pelegrin, E.; Galindo, J..

OceanDocs
Wöhler, O.C.; Giussi, A.R.; García de la Rosa, S.B.; Sánchez, M.F.; Hansen, J.E.; Cordo, H.D.; Alvarez Colombo, G.L.; Incorvaia, I.S.; Reta, R.; Abachián, V.E..
An assessment survey on the austral fish was carried out during the summer 1997 on both the shelf and slope off southern Argentina. The cruise covered 101,508 nm2 between 45° and 54° 30'S and depths between 50 and 400 m. The survey did not include the area controlled by the United Kingdom. Considering the total area as an undivided stratum, a random sampling was used to estimate demersal fish biomass and a delta distribution-based model to evaluate mean densities. Out of the forty five species caught 28 were bony fish and 17 elasmobranch. Four cephalopod mollusc species were also identified. A biomass of 3.2 million tons (CI(95o/o): 1.90 - 6.06 millions) proved that longtail hake was the most abundant resource within the region followed by common hake...

Evaluación De La Harina De [Spirulina Platenses] Como Alimento Y Aditivo Para La Producción De Postlarvas De Camarón Blanco [Litopenaeus Schmitti] (Pérez-Farfante Y Kensley, 1997) OceanDocs
Jaime Ceballos, B..
The high cost of using live microalgae and the variations in nutritional value during larval culture constitute a problem for any operation relying on the massive culture of unicellular microalgae. The price of Artemia cysts in the international market and the increasing demand in Cuba, due to the development of the shrimp culture industry, has made the search of feeding alternatives that can of satisfactory diminish the live food consumption in shrimp larviculture, essential. Spirulina platensis meal (SPM), produced commercially in Cuba, has optimal nutritional characteristics to be used as a food ingredient in any aquatic animal culture. For that reason in this thesis we set out to improve the efficiency in the production of Litopenaeus schmitti shrimp...

Studies of the life-history and energetics of marine and brackish-water nematodes: 2. Production, respiration and food uptake by <i>Monhystera disjuncta</i> OMA
Herman, P.M.J.; Vranken, G..
An energy budget was constructed for the marine nematode <i>Monhystera disjuncta</i>. Respiration was measured with a modified Cartesian diver technique, in which the nematodes were kept in agar inside the diver 'head'. The relationship between respiration and body weight was: R=1.53 W0.75. Body growth was exponential during the juvenile phase, with a growth rate equal to 0.61 d-1. After maturation the growth rate fell to 0,17 d-1. Food uptake was measured in experiments with radiolabeled bacteria. In one series of experiments the accumulation of radiolabel in the nematodes was followed. In a second series the decrease in labeling was followed when pre-labeled nematodes fed on...

Studies of the life-history and energetics of marine and brackish-water nematodes: 1. Demography of <i>Monhystera disjuncta</i> at different temperature and feeding conditions OMA
Vranken, G.; Herman, P.M.J.; Heip, C.H.R..
Aspects of the demography of <i>Monhystera disjuncta</i> were investigated at different feeding conditions (monoxenic cultures with different bacterial strains, and different densities in the feeding suspension with one strain). Embryonic development time, minimum generation time, egg deposition rate and adult longevity depend on temperature, quality and quantity of food offered. Body mass at maturity is an allometric function of food density. It is shown that a previously inferred selectivity in food uptake is an artifact of culture conditions. pH buffering and addition of sterols permit culture of the species on a wide variety of bacterial strains. <i>M. disjuncta</i> is less well adapted to take advantage of high food density...

Feeding of the brine shrimp <i>Artemia</i> on yeast: effect of mechanical disturbance, animal density, water quality and light intensity OMA
Coutteau, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
Details are given of experiments conducted to determine the effects of tank culture conditions on the feeding of <i>Artemia</i>. Mechanical disturbance, animal density and water quality were found to affect the feeding rate of <i>Artemia</i>. The importance of culture conditions in maintaining a rate of food consumption which does not limit the growth of the brine shrimp is stressed.

Optimal Contracting for Cattle Feeding: An Assessment of Climatic Conditions AgEcon
Rahman, Shaikh Mahfuzur.
A unique approach using a biophysical growth model from the animal science literature is used to examine optimal contract cattle feeding behavior under alternative climatic conditions. The examination of incentives and outcomes in an unusually comprehensive contract parameter and behavioral space is made possible by combining simulated feedlot and carcass performance of a large set of cattle with public price and weather data. The model uniquely fits typical risk aversion levels and rationalizes existing contract types. The results show that optimal cattle feeding contract varies with climatic condition, but there is a tendency to replace cost-of-gain contracts with yardage-feed contracts as grid pricing has emerged.

TAKARMÁNYOZÁSI VIZSGÁLATOK EREDMÉNYEI AZ ÖKOLÓGIAI BÁRÁNYNEVELÉSBEN AgEcon
Monori, Istvan; Feher, Alajos; Csizi, Istvan; Czimbalmos, Robert.

Effects of sex, host-plant deprivation and presence of conspecific immatures on the cannibalistic behavior of wild Ascia monuste orseis (Godart) (Lepidoptera, Pieridae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Santana,Alessandra F. K.; Zago,Rosana C.; Zucoloto,Fernando S..
Effects of sex, host-plant deprivation and presence of conspecific immatures on the cannibalistic behavior of wild Ascia monuste orseis (Godart) (Lepidoptera, Pieridae). The specialist cabbage caterpillar Ascia monuste orseis (Lepidoptera, Pieridae) feeds on plants of the Brassicaceae family, but may eventually ingest conspecific eggs and larvae during the larval stage. The present study examines feeding behavior of 4th and 5th instar cabbage caterpillars in relation to sex, host-plant deprivation and presence of conspecifics. We recorded number of egg ingested per larvae, developmental indices and duration of feeding, exploratory and resting behavior. Kale deprived caterpillars presented high rates of cannibalism, development delay and decreased...

Use of food resources and resource partitioning among five syntopic species of Hypostomus (Teleostei: Loricariidae) in an Atlantic Forest river in southern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Abilhoa,Vinicius; Valduga,Marcos O.; Frehse,Fabricio de A.; Vitule,Jean R.S..
ABSTRACT We analyzed the diet and resource partitioning among five syntopic species of Hypostomus Lacépède, 1803 in the Corumbataí River in southeastern Brazil. The gut contents of 352 individuals were assessed and 21 food items were identified and quantified under an optical microscope. The food items found in the gut contents indicate that these suckermouth loricariids are bottom-dwelling detritivorous/periphytivorous catfishes. PERMANOVA and SIMPER analyses indicated variation in the consumption of some resources, and the contribution of periphytic algae was primarily responsible for such dissimilarity. ECOSIM analyses of dietary overlap showed evidence of resource sharing among all species in the dry and rainy periods. This is most likely the result of...

Diet of Brachycephalus brunneus (Anura: Brachycephalidae): in the Atlantic Rainforest of Paraná, southern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Fontoura,Pedro Luiz; Ribeiro,Luiz Fernando; Pie,Marcio Roberto.
Saddleback toads (Brachycephalidae: Brachycephalus) are a remarkable group of highly endemic species from the southern Atlantic Rainforest of Brazil. They are brightly colored, diurnal, minute frogs that live in the leaf litter of high-elevation cloud forests. Little is known about the natural history of these frogs, particularly their diet. In the present study we provide the first published account of a Brachycephalus species diet. Specimens of Brachycephalus brunneus Ribeiro, Alves, Haddad &amp; Reis, 2005 (N = 20) were collected from two locations in the Serra do Mar mountain range in the state of Paraná, southern Brazil. A total of 137 food items were recorded, with Acari being the most common item (62.4%). This prevalence is much higher than the...

Great unexpected differences between two populations of the intertidal crab Neohelice granulata inhabiting close but contrasting habitats (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Spivak,Eduardo D.; Bas,Claudia C.; Luppi,Tomás A..
ABSTRACT Two populations of the Southwestern Atlantic burrowing crab, Neohelice granulata (Dana, 1851), are separated by only 190 km. They inhabit bays that drain into a Patagonian gulf in the southernmost limit of the geographical distribution of the species: San Antonio Bay (SAO) and San José Gulf (RSJ). The population from SAO has been extensively studied, whereas that of RSJ has not. The main goal of this study is to compare the ecological and habitat characteristics of the two populations, based on samples collected on successive days during the middle of the reproductive season of the crab. The substrate of SAO is composed of a high proportion of gravel and scarce organic matter, whereas the substrate of RSJ presents twice as much silt and clay, and...
