This study aimed to investigate the ideal brood area to be introduced for strengthening Apis mellifera colonies, considering variations in the hive's internal ambience. Therefore, eight colonies were equipped with data loggers for recording variations in temperature and humidity inside the hives. Then, these colonies were split in four treatments involving the swapping of four, three, two and one brood comb between strong and weak colonies. Growth in the amount of brood and food stores to the four colony strengthening treatments was assessed counting the comb cells to record changes in the brood and food area. The colonies tended to restore their normal thermoregulation within four hours after they had been manipulated and the hive cover had been closed,... |

The objective of the present experiment was to study the need for the protein supplementation in the diet of growing dairy bulls (initial live weight 272 ± 28.5 kg and final live weight 666 ± 31.2 kg, on average) fed total mixed ration based on moderate digestible grass silage and barley. The experiment comprised 24 Finnish Ayrshire bulls and 8 Holstein-Friesian bulls and included four treatments. The control diet (C) consisted of moderate digestible (653 g digestible organic matter in dry matter (DM) grass silage (450 g kg-1 DM), barley grain (275) and barley fibre (275) without protein supplementation. Three isonitrogenous experimental diets included also extra protein, i.e. (1) rapeseed meal (RSM) (supplementation 530 g DM per animal day-1), (2) wet... |

The results to date, from this sire breed comparison study indicate that with the contrasting Aberdeen Angus and Charolais sire breeds that is possible to achieve animal performance data comparable to well managed conventional suckler calf to beef systems (300 kg carcass for heifers in Nov and 400 kg carcass for steers in March). Similarly the responses to sire breed type, sex and date of slaughter for the organic beef animals are biologically compatible. Organic beef is produced under organic rules in response to consumer demand for organic product. The organic system contributes to the protection of the environment and animal welfare. “We have not inherited the world from our forefathers we have borrowed it from our children” (Kashmiri proverb). |

This report summarises the results of a preliminary trial undertaken to investigate the effect of day one chick weight on weight gain and final weight. The objectives of the trial were to ascertain the range in weights of day old chicks brought on to the farm and establish if any low or high weights were impacting on the weight gain and final weight of the birds. A sub-sample of the brooder intake of birds was weighed on arrival and marked in accordance with their weight. Marked birds were caught and re-marked weekly. At week four, prior to the move of the birds to the field sheds, the marked birds were caught weighed and re-marked. It was at this point that the trial was abandoned as, of the 150 birds marked at the start of the trial period, only 48... |

To investigate the effect of feed transition from barn feeding to pasture on the course of ruminal pH a study with 8 lactating dairy cows was undertaken. Therefore, an indwelling pH-measurement and data transmitting system was used. The experiment started at 27th March 2012 and a gradual transition from barn feeding to pasture feeding was done (periods P1-P6). After 7 days of barn feeding (P1) animals were given pasture progressively with increasing grazing time from 2 to 7 h/d (P2, day 8-14). In P3 (day 15-21) the cows spent 7 hours/d on pasture. Beginning on day 22, animals had 20 h/d access to pasture (continuous grazing), only semi-daily interrupted for 2 hours for milking and additional feeding (P4-P6). During the barn feeding period (P1), average... |

1. Dominant females do not decrease the skatole and androstenone concentration in entire male pigs being dominated during the growth period from 50-100 kg liveweight (see fig. 1 and 3). 2. The amount of entire male pigs having higher skatole concentrations in blood – corresponding to skatole in backfat > 0.15 µg/g – are surprisingly high at 50 kg and 75 kg liveweight compared to 100 kg (10, 9 and 13 entire male pigs). 3. Furthermore it is not the same pigs having high skatole concentrations during the period from 50 over 75 to 100 kg liveweight. 4. The crossbreed HxLYD had significant higher skatole concentration in backfat at slaughter (100 kg liveweight) compared to the crossbreed YDxLYD (P<0.05)(see fig. 2). However, there was no significant... |

There is a wealth of information on the vital role of trace minerals in ruminant health. This information gives some reasonable indications of the levels required by dairy and beef animals to maintain good health though there is much less information available for sheep. There is also a wealth of information available on the role played by trace elements in the major diseases of ruminants, particularly mastitis and the problem of high somatic cell counts. There is also information available on the effects of trace mineral supplementation on fertility and production. This information should be used by organic farmers and their advisors to assess trace mineral status of animals under their care and to design strategies to help ensure that the trace element... |

Summary of key trends and changes in 2004 The total organic flock in the EU 25 appears to have increased by between 6 and 9 per cent, depending on stock category. Greatest increases occurred for sheep in France, Italy, Spain and the UK. In the other livestock categories, increases in some countries were balanced by decline in others, leading to overall small increases (see Table 3 update1). The production area of organic cereals increased between 2003 and 2004 by approximately 6 %. Significant reduction (9%) in the cereals area seems to have occurred in Italy, Spain and Hungary, whereas the area increased in Austria, Greece and Portugal (see Table 4 update). The area for pulses appears to have declined by a further 14% in the EU 25. Reductions... |

In the present study, we have hypothesized that replacing barley with high proportions of dried citrus pulp in a concentrate-based diet for lambs could increase the intake of unsaturated fatty acids and could reduce the rate of the ruminal biohydrogenation of PUFA, with a consequent improvement of the intramuscular fatty acid composition. To test this hypothesis, 26 Comisana lambs were divided into 3 groups and for 56 d were fed a barley-based concentrate diet (CON; 8 lambs) or 2 diets in which barley was replaced with 24% (CIT24; 9 lambs) or 35% (CIT35; 9 lambs) dried citrus pulp. An overall improvement of the fatty acid composition of LM from lambs fed citrus pulp-containing diets was found. The PUFA/SFA ratio was lower (P < 0.05) in the LM from lambs... |

The ProPara midterm project report sets out progress on several tasks. - Liver fluke (Fasciola) prevalence on dairy farms in EU and risk factor analysis took place in the Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, and Lithuania. In the Netherlands, neighbouring cattle farms have been identified based on Fasciola levels (farms with high or levels of Fasciola) to participate in the risk factor analysis. An additional objective was to validate the bulk milk samples antibodies as a diagnostic tool for the disease. It was reported that the outcomes of blood antibodies were not always in line with milk antibodies, questioning the validity of milk antibodies for Fasciola diagnosis. In Denmark, organic dairy farmers with more than 100 animals (n=372) were contacted for... |

Infestation with gastro-intestinal nematodes (GIN) in small ruminants can cause severe economic losses and endanger animal welfare. The development of organic farming systems, the increased public awareness for drug residues in agricultural products and the development of resistant strains of parasites have enforced the search for sustainable alternatives. The aim of this review is to summarise the current scientific knowledge of alternative strategies to prevent and control endo-parasitic diseases in organic sheep and goat farming systems. The conducted literature evaluation has revealed the major potential to be within the field of bioactive forages, phytotherapy, homeopathy and copper-oxide wire particles. Alternative management pattern like... |
