This document is a result of an environmental impact study carried out between 1993 and 1995 on the site of a marine trout culture located in the Harbour of Cherbourg, France. It deals with the solid waste of the farm and concems deposition rate, sediment analysis and chemistry (fine fraction < 63 ~m, organic matter, carbon, nitrogen, copper and zinc), bottom living organisms and underwater video monitoring. The impact observed is very moderate and localised. This is mainly due to the strong d)'TIamics and flushing rate of the site. A seperate volume of the same study deals with dissolved waste and concems the water mass (volume 1 : water and pelagos). (Not controlled OCR) |

In costal systems, particulate organic matter (POM) results from a multiplicity of sources having their respective dynamics in terms of production, decomposition, transport and burial. The POM pool experiences thus considerable spatial and temporal variability. In order to better understand this variability, the present study employs statistical multivariate analyses to investigate links between POM composition and environmental forcings for a panel of twelve coastal systems distributed along the three maritime regions of France and monitored weekly to monthly for 1 to 8 years. At multi-system scale, two main gradients of POC composition have been identified: a ‘Continent-Ocean’ gradient associated with hydrodynamics, sedimentary dynamics and depth of the... |

This study recounts the policies on fishing fleet renewal in France from 1945 to 1983. The views held by sector professionals and the public authorities on the role of fleet renewal in fisheries economy are put into context in terms of stock abundance, access to fishing grounds, the state of the market, etc. The consequences of the lack of consistent guidelines for distributing the resources between competing fleets, foreign or national, are presented. The limits of the stances held on technical "progress" and "reasonable" management of resources are discussed. Other, complementary lines of research to undertake are proposed as a conclusion. Many tables and figures illustrate the text. |

According to the media the French fishing industry has been in permanent state of crisis for the last 40 years. This paper recounts the events surrounding three major episodes of crises (late 1970s, mid-1990s, and early 2000s), and the measures taken by governments to resolve them. Invariably, these involved the distribution of sizeable amounts of public aids, in different forms, to the fishing sector. The efficacy of the subsidy programmes is discussed with reference to the goals stated by their proponents, regarding trade balance, competitiveness, profitability, employment and safety. Overall, the massive aids granted to the sector (comparable with the gross value of landings, annually) have not achieved the stated objectives and, paradoxically, have... |

It is well known that temporal changes in bivalve body mass are strongly correlated with temporal variations in water temperature and food supply. In order to study the influence of the year-to-year variability of environmental factors on oyster growth, we coupled a biogeochemical sub-model, which simulates trophic resources of oysters (i.e. phytoplankton biomass via chlorophyll a), and an ecophysiological sub-model, which simulates growth and reproduction (i.e. gametogenesis and spawning), using mechanistic bases. The biogeochemical sub-model successfully simulated phytoplankton dynamics using river nutrient inputs and meteorological factors as forcing functions. Adequate simulation of oyster growth dynamics requires a relevant food quantifier compatible... |

European stakeholders engaged in combatting the eutrophication of the North Sea welcomed three Water Framework Directive innovations: a more holistic approach to quality, the binding nature of WFD objectives, and greater public participation. Twenty years later, however, there has been a disappointing amount of progress in the reduction of diffuse pollution. In the Seine River Basin, the amount of livestock rearing is low; yet the basin is subject to significant diffuse pollution due to agriculture. This paper reports our study of this case; we examine the literature on WFD implementation policy in order to identify the physical and social causes of this failure to reduce diffuse pollution. We show that the nitrates, phosphorus, and pesticides that affect... |

The first national census concerning shellfish culture in France was carried out in 2002. The main purpose was to provide accurate and comprehensive information on the number and structure of the companies using an in depth review of production factors (leases, plants, equipment's, labour and qualifications), and a survey of cultural practices up to the market level. Moreover, the census aimed to quantify the bivalve sales dedicated to consumption and to measure the livestock transfers among rearing shellfish production areas at different developmental stages: spat, intermediate products and fully grown marketable products. The French oyster production reached 109 000 metric tons in 2001. The main production was observed in Poitou-Charentes region... |

This study contributes to inventory programme on emerging pollutants in French waters and to the general reflection which will enable to update the list of relevant substnaces to be included in the new monitoring programmes to come. This work concerns the coastal part of the inventory programme on marine waters and sediments of France and five overseas french departments (OFD). In this goal, passive sampling techniques and direct extraction techniques have been tested through the implementation of in situ systems integrators POCIS (Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Sampler) and the extraction by SBSE bars (Stir bar sorptive extraction) directly in the waters sampled. Finally, analyzes of sediment completed the acquisition of data. Arount 40 stations were... |

Vegetation and quantitative climate reconstructions from a northwestern France shelf core (VK0358Bis) show orbital and suborbital climate variability for the last 8850 years in this region. A long-term cooling trend in summer temperatures, marked by gradual temperate and humid forest decline, parallels cooling in Greenland and the decrease of mid-latitude summer insolation reduction until at least 2000 cal. yr BP. At the long-term scale, the lowering in seasonal contrast revealed by vegetation changes follows the increase of precession. Corylus woodlands spread at the expense of deciduous Quercus forest, between 8740 and 8390 cal. yr BP, linked with the high seasonality conditions that, counterbalancing the long-term astronomical forcing trend, were... |

Within the framework of the study on cup oyster breeding in the Arcachon Basin (IFREMER's SURGIBA Programme, co-financed by Europe, the Regional Council of Aquitaine, the Regional Council of Gironde and the Arcachon Basin's inter-communal Syndicate), some pesticides have been researched in the main waterways and in the waters of several of the Basin's zones (Figure 1), during the summer months (June to September) from 1999 to 2003 inclusive (Auby and Maurer, 2004). The presence of a certain number of molecules, mainly from herbicides, was found in the waters and it has generally been possible to identify their source. Certain substances come from agricultural uses or park maintenance; others are from nautical sources (anti-fouling paint for protecting the... |
