Two new land planarian species (Platyhelminthes: Tricladida) from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest Rev. Bras. Zool.
Almeida,Ana Laura; Kishimoto,Raquel Gualda; Carbayo,Fernando.
The Brazilian Atlantic Forest harbors the world's richest areas of land planarians (Platyhelminthes: Tricladida). Nevertheless, the number of undiscovered species from this biological unit remains seemingly high. Herein we describe Geoplana piriana Almeida & Carbayo, sp. nov. from the state of Rio de Janeiro, and Geoplana tingauna Kishimoto & Carbayo, sp. nov. from the state of Santa Catarina. Each species shows a dorsum with a unique color pattern among Geoplaninae species. Their internal morphology also differs: G. piriana sp. nov. shows a unique combination of features, including an extrabulbar, non-bifurcated prostatic vesicle, a non-folded male atrium, a horizontal, cylindrical penis papilla, a female atrium anteriorly narrowed, and...

The microanatomy of the central nervous system and brain of the Indo-Pacific seahorse, Hippocampus barbouri, during development Rev. Bras. Zool.
Senarat,Sinlapachai; Kettratad,Jes; Kaneko,Gen; Kamnurdnin,Thatpon; Sudtongkong,Chanyut.
ABSTRACT The central nervous system (CNS) of Teleostei is a complex system of self-governance and its morphology is reflected in the physiological and reproductive behaviors. The Indo-Pacific seahorse, Hippocampus barbouri Jordan & Richard son, 1908, is a new candidate species for aquaculture in Thailand. In this study, we investigated the brain morphology of H. barbouri across various developmental windows. Light microscopic observations of adult brains revealed a large optic tectum in the mesencephalon, whereas the cerebral hemispheres and the cerebellum are of medium size. The detailed brain structures were generally similar to those of other teleosts; however, only five distinct layers were present in the optic tectum, including the stratum...

Comparative studies on the histology and ultrastructure of the siphons of two species of Tellinidae (Mollusca: Bivalvia) from Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Vitonis,João E.V.V.; Zaniratto,Cristiane P.; Machado,Fabrizio M.; Passos,Flávio D..
Despite the great importance of the siphons for infaunal bivalves, only a few studies have examined their tissues using histology techniques or scanning electron microscopy. In the present study, the siphons of Tellina lineata Turton, 1819 and Macoma biota Arruda & Domaneschi, 2005 were investigated. The siphon walls are composed by a series of muscle sheets of longitudinal ("L"), circular ("C") and radial ("R") fibers, with a clear pattern common to both species: there is a main median longitudinal layer (Lm), and two peripheral circular layers, one inner (Ci) and one outer (Co), near the epithelia. A median circular layer (Cm) separates an internal (Lmi) from an outer (Lmo) median longitudinal layer. Further, the Co is split by a thin outer...

Silva,José P. do Carmo; Costa,Marcus R. da; Gomes,Iracema D.; Araújo,Francisco G..
ABSTRACT Cynoscion leiarchus (Cuvier, 1830) is a coastal fish species that is widely distributed along the Western Atlantic coast, from Belize to Southern Brazil. In Brazil, C. leiarchus It is an important resource for commercial and artisanal fisheries. Our objective was to describe the oogenesis and spermatogenesis stages of the species and to estimate batch size and relative fecundity of a population at a tropical bay in southeastern Brazil. The examined specimens were obtained from artisanal catches that took place from July 2013 to June 2014. A total of 18 individuals (11 females and 7 males) were examined for histological analysis and 20 spawning-capable females were used to estimate fecundity. Five stages of oocyte development (primary growth,...

Intestinal histomorphology in Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum fed bovine colostrum as source of protein and bioactive peptides Scientia Agricola
Rodrigues,Ana Paula Oeda; Pauletti,Patricia; Kindlein,Liris; Delgado,Eduardo Francisquine; Cyrino,José Eurico Possebon; Machado-Neto,Raul.
Histological responses of the intestine are key for evaluating nutritional value of feed ingredients, since the organ is not only the chief site of feed digestion and nutrient absorption but also plays an important immunological function. Histomorphological alterations were evaluated in the intestine of juvenile striped catfish, Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum, fed diets containing 0 (control), 10 or 20% inclusion of lyophilized bovine colostrum (LBC), as source of protein or bioactive peptides, for either 30 or 60 days. Fish fed 20LBC presented at 60d a distinct pattern of macrophages and, some of them, higher number of vacuoles in rectum mucosa. The thickness of the muscle layer (TML) in fish fed diets with LBC was higher in the first portion of medium...

Ekkarat Kaewnang-O; Aran Ngampongsai; Sanan Subhadhirasakul; Teerapol Srichana.
Larvicidal activity of various concentrations of fixed oil and crude extract from sa-dao-thiam, Azadirachta excelsa (Jack) seed kernel was assayed on an Aedes aegypti (L.) test population under controlled laboratory conditions. Concentration levels of responses at 24, 48, 72, and 96 hrs were evaluated. The LC50 values of the fixed oil and the crude extract were 403.6 and 518.7 ppm, respectively. One hundred percent mortality in 24 hrs-post treatment was achieved at 2,000 and 4,000 ppm for the oil and crude extract, respectively. It suggested that the oil is more toxic to Ae. aegypti larvae than the crude extract. Further investigation suggested the occurrence of molting inhibition of Ae. aegypti larvae by the fixed oil and crude extract as indicated by the...

The present study analyses the reproductive aspects of Sphoeroides greeleyi (Gilbert, 1900), such as morphology and histochemistry of carbohydrates in the oogenesis phases, maturity scale, time and type of spawn, sexual rate and first ripened mature size for females. From the monthly captured animais (Nov 1998 to Nov 1999) the morphometric data (entire length and total weight) were extracted and the sex and the gonadal maturity were determined. Some ovaries were prepared for microscopic analysis that charac-terized six phases for the development of the ovarian folheies. Through the carbohydrates analysis the acid carbohydrates could be related to the oogenesis maintenance and the neutral carbohydrates to the beginning of embryonic development. A maturity...

Ignatti,Ana Cristina; Costa-Leonardo,Ana Maria.
The histological study of the exocrine glands in the swarming females showed the presence of tergal glands, mandibular glands, salivary glands and sternal glands. Tergal and sternal glands are not developed in the physogastric queens, probably, because of a regression process. The development of mandibular glands is similar in swarming females and physogastric queens.

Desenvolvimento pós-embrionário do intestino médio de Dermatobia hominis (Linnaeus Jr.) (Diptera, Cuterebridae) Zoologia
Lello,Edy de; Vieira,Ana Maria.
Dermatobia hominis (Linnaeus, 1781) midgut is internally lined by an epithelium of polytenic cells, some low others prismatic with well developed brush border. Their apical portion are enlarged by secretory vesicles, forming button-like structures that are pinched off to the lumen, some accompained by the nucleus characterizing apocrine and holocrine secretions. This epithelium is gradually renewed by small, non polytenic regenerative cells, found scattered at its basal portion. At the end of the third instar the metamorphosis begins. The epithelial cells present signs of degeneration and at the first day of pupation the regenerative cells increase in number. By the 5th day of pupation these regenerative cells, besides being increased in number,...

Redescrição de Choeradoplana iheringi Graff (Platyhelminthes, Tricladida, Terricola) Zoologia
Leal-Zanchet,Ana Maria; Souza,Simone Aparecida de.
Choeradoplana iheringi Graff, 1899 was described on specimens proceeding from Taquara, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Afterwards, RIESTER (1938), MARCUS (1951) and FROEHLICH (1955) analyzed specimens from southeast Brazil, identifying them as C. iheringi. In this study samples of C. iheringi from São Francisco de Paula, a site next to the type-locality, and specimens from the Southeast (Salesópolis, state of São Paulo), are comparatively analyzed. It was observed that the external morphology of the specimens from São Francisco de Paula and from Salesópolis is concordant with the original description of C. iheringi, as well as that by RIESTER (1938) and MARCUS (1951). The pharynx is better designated as bell-form, and not collar-form as described by GRAFF...

Desenvolvimento pós-embrionário do intestino anterior de Dermatobia hominis (Linnaeus Jr.) (Diptera, Cuterebridae) Zoologia
Vieira,Ana Maria; Lello,Edy de.
Foregut in D. hominis (Linnaeus Jr., 1781) as the majority of the larval Diptera somatic tissue, is made up of polytenic cells, and grows at the expenses of the polytenization of its nuclei followed by the increase in size of each cell. The oesophagus, of ectodermic origem, is interiorly covered by a chitinous squamous epithelium that rests upon a very thin basal lamina. This sheet is surrounded by thick muscle bundles. The oesophagus intussuscepts the midgut forming the cardia. The cardia, with three epithelial layers: two internal ones, of ectodermal origin and one external of endodermic origin. At the anterior portion of the cardia, between these two types of epithelium, there is a cluster of small, non polytenic cells, forming the imaginal disk of the...

HISTOLOGICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM OF MALE AND FEMALE HATCHLINGS OF THE MAGDALENA RIVER TURTLE (Podocnemis lewyana) Acta biol.Colomb.
SÁNCHEZ-OSPINA,ANDRÉS C; RODRIGUEZ,BERARDO; CEBALLOS,CLAUDIA P..
In this study we described the macroscopic and microscopic histology of the reproductive system of male and female Podocnemis lewyana neonates (3.5 months old). We found macroscopic differences in the morphology of the gonads between the sexes, with ovaries being twice as long as testes, and testes being twice as wide as ovaries. Microscopically, we identified several immature elements, such as the lack of a muscle layer in the oviduct of females, and simple epithelia instead of pseudostratified epithelia in the oviduct and epididymis described in reptile adults. We also found a black pigment observed macroscopically in the mesovarium, and macroscopically and histologically in the epididymis. This pigment is consistent with the center of melano-macrophages...
