Generic keys for the identification of larvae of Dytiscidae from Argentina are presented. A total of 27 dytiscid genera are recognized in Argentina, included in 16 tribes and seven subfamilies. Twenty-two of the 27 genera are included in the keys. The remaining fi ve genera could not be included because their larvae are unknown (Bidessonotus Régimbart, Brachyvatus Zimmermann, Hemibidessus Zimmermann, Neobidessus Young) or remain poorly known (Cybister Curtis). The keys are presented in English and Spanish. Morphological as well as chaetotaxic characters were included, and an emphasis was made to include easily seen and identifiable characters. However, due to the small size of many dytiscid larvae, some of the characters mentioned in the keys (especially... |

Ammonia results from decomposition of effluents organic matter, e.g. feed wastes and fish faeces. Its un-ionized form can be toxic because diffuses easily through fish respiratory membranes, damaging gill epithelium and impairing gas exchanges. The objective of this work was determining the 96-hour CL50 of un-ionized ammonia for newly hatched pejerrey Odontesthes bonariensis larvae. Trials were set up completely randomized design, with three different concentration of un-ionized ammonia (0.57, 0.94, and 1.45 mg L-1 NH3-N) and a control treatment (n = 3). Experimental units were 20-L, aerated aquaria stocked with 20 larvae (average weight 3.9 mg). Pejerrey larvae exposed to un-ionized ammonia during 96 hours present 50% mortality at 0.71 mg L-1 NH3-N. |

Feeding behavior of the larvae's prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii De Man, 1879, in each stage of development was studied face alArtemia Linnaeus, 1758 nauplii, dry and wet diets. Groups of ten larvae in each stage were placed in 500 ml beakers at 29ºC in filtered brackish water. After the fasting period of acclimatization, the three types of food were offered separately to the larvae and the feeding behavior was observed during 30 min. Feeding perception, capture, grasp and ingestion of food were used to determine feeding pattern. Stage I lawac do not eat. The feeding behavior of larvae was similar on the stages II - XI. The perception in distance does not occur in most individuais; the feeding process generally started with the physrcal contact of food... |

A fragment of a forest, located in the urban area of Londrina, Paraná, Brazil, was chosen to represent the area for this study. Many Merostachys Spreng, 1824 bamboo, which were naturally perforated and, therefore, ready to retain water, were found in the interior of this forest. Bamboo were collected every fifteen days during field actions. They were then measured and cut meter by meter before their contents were analyzed in the laboratory. A total of 542 specimens from the following species were collected during one year: Sabethes aurescens (Lutz, 1905), Sabethes melanomymphe Dyar, 1924, Sabethes identicus Dyar & Knab, 1907, Wyeomyia rooti (Del Ponte, 1939), Wyeomyia limai Lane & Cerqueira, 1942, Wyeomyia sp., Trichoprosopon pallidiventer... |

The present paper deals with data on zooplankton collected from the estuary of Potengi, Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil covering a period of one year from October 1992 to October 1993. Three fixed stations within the estuary located at varying distances from the mouth of the river were sampled. Sampling was done monthly when the tide was lowest. Analysis of the samples has shown clear pattern of seasonal variations in abundance of the dominant zooplankton components which are composed of Copepoda, Appendicularia, larvae of Brachyura, larvae of Cirripedia and Chaetognalha. A detailed study of the larvae of Brachyura was also attempted which showed that seven species can be identified in the samples, of which those of Aratus pisonii (H. Milne Edwards) and... |

The species belonging to this genus are easily distinguished from most of the other Tachinidae by their metallic colour -green, blue or purple, although grey coloured species are known. From the nineteen species cited in the literature, seven are herein redescribed: Chrysotachina braueri Townsend, 1931; Chrysotachina equatorialis (Townsend, 1912); Chrysotachina panamensis Curran, 1939; Chrysotachina peruviana Townsend, 1919; Chrysotachina purpurea Curran, 1939; Chrysotachina townsendi Curran, 1939; Chrysotachina willistoni Curran, 1939. The type material of C. peruviana and C. equatorialis was examined. Illustrations of the male terminalia and of the larvae of C. peruviana are presented. A key for the identification of twelve species from South America is... |

Larvae of Culex eduardoi, Culex bigoti, Limatus durhamii and Toxorhynchites were collected in a tyre that had been placed in a wood by a river bank. These larvae were present coexisting and in an individualized form. It was observed that Toxorhynchites, Culex bigoti and Limatus durhamii were efficient in reducing the other two species's population. Culex bigoti and Toxorhynchites showed preference for Culex quinquefasciatus larvae, while Limatus durhamii preferred Culex eduardoi. The most efficient predator was Toxorhynchites, and the least efficient was Limatus durhamii. The reduction of the preys' population density was statistically meaningful in the face of the three species considered as predators. |

The blackfin goosefish is included in a prized fish category, representing valuable fishery resource worldwide. The aim of this study was to identify the Anisakidae larvae parasitizing this fish species, considering the hygienic-sanitary and public health importance of these parasites infecting specimens of the blackfin goosefish, Lophius gastrophysus Miranda-Ribeiro, 1915 (Lophiidae), purchased from markets in the municipalities of Cabo Frio, Niterói, Duque de Caxias and Rio de Janeiro; parasitological indices and sites of infection are presented. From March 2000 to December 2005, 87 specimens of Lophius gastrophysus were investigated for helminths. Seventeen fish (19.5%) were parasitized with larvae of anisakid nematodes. Anisakis simplex,... |

This study aimed to describe the early development of Clarias gariepinus, a species that has been introduced into various watersheds worldwide, in order to help the identification of its eggs, larvae and juveniles in natural environments. The material used was obtained via induced spawning during 1999. After spawning, the periodicity of sampling varied according to ontogenic development. We analyzed 12 eggs, 146 larvae and 6 juveniles. Newly fertilized eggs are spherical, with a double membrane, the density of which varies. Initially the larvae have little pigmentation but this intensifies during development. They have four pairs of well-developed barbels, an elongated body, long dorsal and anal fins, no adipose fin and vesicles surrounding the finfold and... |

The aim of this study was to describe the ontogeny of thyroid follicles in cobia Rachycentron canadum. Larvae were sampled daily (n=15 - 20) from hatching until 15 dah (days after hatching). Following, larvae were sampled every two days by 28 dah; a new sample was taken at 53 dah. The samples were dehydrated, embedded in Paraplast, and sections of 3 µm were dewaxed, rehydrated and stained with HE and PAS. A single follicle was already present 1 dah and three follicles were found 8 dah. The number of follicles increased up to 19 on 53 dah. The diameter of follicles and follicular cell height were lower 1 dah (6.83 ± 1.00 and 4.6 ± 0.01 µm), but increased from 8 dah (24.03 ± 0.46 µm e 6.43 ± 0.46 µm). From 8 dah, the presence of reabsorption vesicles was... |
