Plutella xylostella is a recurring pest on cruciferous crops around the world. In Brazil, it typically requires large number of insecticide sprays, which may lead to fast evolution of resistance. The aim of this study was to assess the susceptibility of Brazilian diamondback moth populations to the insecticides abamectin, deltamethrin, and spinosad. Leaf dip bioassays were used to determine mortality data obtained after 48 h of exposure to insecticides and subjected to Probit analysis. The population from Bonito, state of Pernambuco, Brazil, had the highest toxicity ratio (20.2 - fold) to abamectin compared to the reference population. The LC50 values for deltamethrin ranged from 85.2 to 360.1 mg L-1, demonstrating a high survival of populations in... |

Six kinds of crucifer (broccoli, cabbage, califlower, kale, mustard and rugula) were tested, as food, for larvae od Ascia monuste. The best results were obtained eith califlower, broccoli, rugula and kale. Four sugars (glucose, fructose, sucrose and maltose) were tested to know their influence on the number of oviposition in female of Ascia monuste. The best results were obtained with fructose, glucose and sucrose. |

The use of nectar and pollen of a bromeliad by two heliconiine butterflies, Heliconius ethilla narcaea Godart, 1819 and H. sara apseudes (Hübner, [1813]) (Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae, Heliconiinae), is herein reported. Observations were made during a pollination study of Aechmea gracilis Lindman (Bromeliaceae, Bromelioidea) in a second-growth forest of the village Vila Dois Rios, Ilha Grande, Rio de Janeiro State, southeastern Brazil. Field observations showed that H. ethilla can be more aggressive than H. sara in exploiting A. gracilis floral resources. Temporal differences in the use of these resources were also observed: H. sara remained comparatively less time on flowers than H. ethilla. |

Fifteen species of Aguna Williams, 1927 (Hesperiidae: Pyrginae) are known from near Cacaulàndia in central Rondônia, Brazil; nine represent undescribed species. These nine, plus four additional new species discovered among material from other areas, are named and described: Aguna latifascia, Aguna coeloides, Aguna nicolayi, Aguna latimacula, Aguna penicillata, Aguna spicata, Aguna longicauda, Aguna panama, Aguna spatulala, Aguna similis, Aguna mesodenlala, Aguna squamalba, Aguna parva. The species of Aguna are placed into ten species groups based upon the characters of the male and female genitalia. These groups are described and their included species are discussed. Aguna williamsi Hayward, 1935, new synonymy is considered synonymous with Eudamus... |

Eois tegularia (Guenée, [1858]) and Eois glauculata (Walker, [1863]) larvae were studied by one year in semidec iduous forest at Canchim Farm (EMBRAPA), São Carlos, São Paulo, Brazil. Specimens were hosted by species of Piper Linnaeus (Piperaceae): P. mollicomum Kunth, P. amalogo Linnaeus, P. glabratum Kunth and P. gaudichaudianum Kunth. Some parasitoids were reared from the larvae of Eois Hübner, 1818 species, as follow. Hymenoptera: Cotesia Cameron, 1891, Apanteles Foerster, 1862, Glyptapanteles Ashmead, 1904, Dolichogenidea Viereck, 1911, Meteorus Haliday, 1835 (Braconidae); Mesochorus Gravenhorst, 1829, Venturia Schrottky, 1902 (Ichneumonidae); Elachertus Spinola, 1811 (Eulophidae); Perilampus Latreille, 1809 (Perilampidae), Diptera: Myiopharus Brauer... |

The understanding of the distribution and richness patterns of species is very important in ecology. Also, for the Cerrado region, this is very important and urgent, because of the strong pressure for new areas designated for agriculture. In five areas of the Cerrado, an exploratory study was carried out on the diversity, evenness and similarity of moth species. Moths were captured in a white sheet hung vertically and illuminated by a 250 Watt mercury vapor lamp. The alpha diversity was calculated using the Shannon-Wiener index (H') and the Simpson index (γ). The beta diversity was examined for all sampled localities and estimated by Wittaker's measure. The Sörensen and Jaccard indexes were used to calculate similarity. A total of 11130 individuals, 1064... |

This paper relates to the first case of Pinus patula defoliation by Fulgurodes sartinaria Guenée, 1857 (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Fieldand laboratory studies showed that F. sartinaria is a voraceus species with high biotic potential. Avarage egg laying by female was 180.82 with 22.34±7.36% and 12.91±0.11 days of egg viability and incubation period, respectively. Larval period passed through five instars with a mean of 78.56±1.91 days. Pre-pupal and pupal stages had a mean period of 3.3±0.24 and 20.70±2.05 days, respectively. Males and females were very similar in appearance, with 12.88±0.92 and 12.00± 1.65 days of adult live, respectivelly. It were found an identified egg parasite and Brachymeria sp. pupal parasite. |

A diversified Lepidoptera fauna is found associated with Eucalyptus plantations in Brazil. From October 1990 to September 1991 twelve light traps were used in three regions of the Cerrado area with Eucalyptus plantations (Bom Despacho - BD, Três Marias - TM and Montes Claros - MC), in Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Twenty three Lepidoptera defoliator species were found in those regions. These species were affected by many factors, specially the plantation stage, the neighboring plant species, the type of brush vegetation and the species of Eucalyptus planted in a specific area. The saniples were not significantly different between regions in species richness (12 to 17 species; p=0.065) or eveness (0.53 to 0.70; p=0.779) in a randomized ANOVA test. Assuming a... |
