Analysis of floristic similarity between forest remnants from the upper Paraná river floodplain, Brazil - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v34i3.8500 Biological Sciences
Slusarski, Simone Rodrigues; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Souza, Maria Conceição de; Universidade Estadual de Maringá.
The vegetation from the upper Paraná river floodplain is a fragment of Seasonal Semideciduous Forest (SSF) that presents fields, lowlands and extensive areas of pasture along with forest formations. Aiming to accomplish analyses of floristic similarity between riparian forests remnants in this floodplain, an analysis using nine surveys was performed, four on the right bank, two on the left bank and three at an island, including tree species. Sørensen’s (ISs) and Jaccard’s (ISj) similarity coefficients were calculated, and a Correspondence Analysis (CA) was applied to a matrix of presence and absence of species. Thirty-seven families, 80 genera and 110 species were recorded. Among the species, 5.5% were generalist, while 29.1% were exclusive to one survey....

Testing arbitrary classes of light in a physiognomically heterogeneous area of "campo rupestre" vegetation Anais da ABC (AABC)
MOREIRA,ANA S.F.P.; BORBA,EDUARDO L.; LEMOS-FILHO,JOSE P..
The Brazilian "campo rupestre" vegetation shows high light heterogeneity, characteristic which is often disregarded in ecophysiological studies due the difficult of obtaining accurate measurements in a complex environment. The aim of the present study it was to describe how much heterogeneous is the light distribution in this environment, as well as tried to define classes in relation to the photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) for 30 rupicolous individuals of Bulbophyllum involutum. The individuals were marked and previously classified in light classes visually predetermined ("full sun", "partially shaded" and "shaded"). Once defined these classes, principal component analysis, cluster and dispersal analyses using direct and indirect PAR measures...

GILES,JOÃO ANTONIO D.; OLIOSI,GLEISON; RODRIGUES,WEVERTON P.; BRAUN,HEDER; RIBEIRO-BARROS,ANA I.; PARTELLI,FÁBIO L..
Abstract The morphoagronomic characterization of 12 genotypes of M. esculenta was performed during the 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 crop years. The 12 genotypes were planted in a randomized block design, with four replicates per genotype. Number of tuberous roots per plant, weight of tuberous roots, root yield, total plant weight, harvest index, plant height, height of first branch, number of shoots, stem diameter, number of buds, leaf dry weight and petiole length were evaluated. Genotypes “Camuquem” and “Goiás” were the most productive, and “Amarela” and “Gema de Ovo” were the most divergent. Seventy percent of genetic diversity was due to petiole length (22.86%), root yield (19.20%), weight of tuberous roots (14.89%) and number of buds (13.72%). Overall, the...

Testing multivariate analysis in paleoenvironmental reconstructions using pollen records from Lagoa Salgada, NE Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Toledo,Mauro B. de; Barth,Ortrud M.; Silva,Cleverson G.; Barros,Marcia A..
Despite the indisputable significance of identification of modern analogs for Paleoecology research, relatively few studies attempted to integrate modern and fossil samples on paleoenvironmental reconstructions. In Palynology, this general pattern is not different from other fields of Paleoecology. This study demonstrates the practical application of modern pollen deposition data on paleoenvironmental reconstructions based on fossil pollen by using multivariate analysis. The main goal of this study was to use Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA) to compare pollen samples from two sediment cores collected at Lagoa Salgada, a coastal lagoon located at northeastern Rio de Janeiro State. Furthermore, modern surface samples were also statistically compared...

Morphological and morphometric variations of Dicrocoelium rileyi (Digenea: Dicrocoelidae) parasitizing Tadarida brasiliensis (Chiroptera: Molosiidae) in Mexico Anais da ABC (AABC)
FALCÓN-ORDAZ,JORGE; OCTAVIO-AGUILAR,PABLO; ESTRELLA-CRUZ,ISABEL.
Abstract: Fifty-five adult Dicrocoelium rileyiMacy, 1931 parasitizing Tadarida brasiliensis (Geoffroy, 1824) from Durango, Nuevo Leon, Puebla, Zacatecas and Mexico State were morphologically described and morphometrically analyzed. To evaluate the degree of variation among populations from the five localities, 27 morphometric measures of this species were transformed into an orthogonal factor by principal component analysis (PCA), and a posterior comparison among populations was performed using discriminant analysis of principal components (DAPC). Significant differences were observed with exceptions between the Puebla – Zacatecas and Nuevo Leon – Mexico State populations when forming three groups with an 88 % assignation. The Durango population was the...

Morphological affinities of Homo naledi with other Plio-Pleistocene hominins: a phenetic approach Anais da ABC (AABC)
NEVES,WALTER A.; BERNARDO,DANILO V.; PANTALEONI,IVAN.
ABSTRACT Recent fossil material found in Dinaledi Chamber, South Africa, was initially described as a new species of genus Homo, namely Homo naledi. The original study of this new material has pointed to a close proximity with Homo erectus. More recent investigations have, to some extent, confirmed this assignment. Here we present a phenetic analysis based on dentocranial metric variables through Principal Components Analysis and Cluster Analysis based on these fossils and other Plio-Pleistocene hominins. Our results concur that the Dinaledi fossil hominins pertain to genus Homo. However, in our case, their nearest neighbors are Homo habilis and Australopithecus sediba. We suggest that Homo naledi is in fact a South African version of Homo habilis, and not...

Identification of informative performance traits in swine using principal component analysis Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Barbosa,L.; Lopes,P.S.; Regazzi,A.J.; Guimarães,S.E.F.; Torres,R.A..
Using principal component analysis, records of 435 animals from an F2 swine population were used to identity independent and informative variables of economically important performance. The following performance traits were recorded: litter size at birth (BL), litter size at weaning (WL), teat number (TN), birth weight (BW), weight at 21 (W21), 42 (W42), 63 (W63) and 77 (W77) days of age, average daily gain (ADG), feed intake (FI) and feed:gain ratio (FGR) from 77 to 105 days of age. Six principal components expressed variation lower than 0.7 (eigen values lower than 0.7) suggesting that six variables could be discarded with little information loss. The discarded variables present significant simple linear correlation with the retained variables. Retaining...

Museum collections indicate bird defaunation in a biodiversity hotspot Biota Neotropica
Cavarzere,Vagner; Silveira,Luis Fabio; Tonetti,Vinicius Rodrigues; Develey,Pedro; Ubaid,Flávio Kulaif; Regalado,Luciano Bonatti; Figueiredo,Luiz Fernando de Andrade.
Abstract Ipanema National Forest, southeastern Brazil, once contained 340 bird species. Forest cover suffered for centuries from log exploitation and, as a result, most of the remaining forests are now an impoverished subset of the original vegetation. We show how the bird community changed over time by comparing historical and recent records. Currently, 228 species can be recorded, for a compilation of 410 species, of which 359 are documented. Some 89 forest species with historical records failed to be detected in recent surveys. Of the 72 Atlantic Forest or Cerrado endemic species, no more than 29 (40%) are still found. The bird community changed from one which used to be related to coastline rain forests to another, which relates more to drier...

The birds at Ilha Comprida beach (São Paulo State, Brazil): a multivariate approach Biota Neotropica
Barbieri,Edison; Paes,Eduardo Tavares.
Birds were censused weekly from January 1999 to January 2001 along Ilha Comprida beach, a barrier island off São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. To evaluate the similarity in the bird's species composition among the weekly surveys, species counts data were arranged on a data matrix with 144 weekly surveys, analyzed following a multivariate analysis protocol. We counted a total of 205,399 individuals and 52 species. Migratory birds were an important component of the avifauna (maximum N = 21,294 individuals and 14 species). The largest numbers of birds were observed during summer, when Nearctic migrants arrive. All 14 of the most common species were migrants, including Calidris alba, Sterna maxima, Charadrius semipalmatus, Sterna hirundo, Thalasseus maximus,...

ABSTRACT Consumers around the world appreciate strawberries for their taste. They have low calories and high concentrations of soluble fibers, vitamin C and flavonoids. This paper verified the combined effect of O2, CO2, and N2O levels on ‘Oso Grande’ strawberries stored at 10° C, under controlled atmosphere (CA). Five different gas mixtures were used: 0.03 kPa CO2 + 20 kPa O2, 80 kPa N2O + 20 kPa O2, 90 kPa O2 + 10 kPa N2, 60 kPa O2 +40 kPa CO2, and 20 kPa O2 + 20 kPa CO2 + 60 kPa N2O. The lowest incidence of postharvest decay was observed with treatment20 kPa O2 + 20 kPa CO2 + 60 kPa N2O, followed by 80 kPa N2O +20 kPa O2 and 90 kPa O2 + 10 kPa N2. The treatment 60 kPa O2 + 40 kPa CO2 induced an increase in the production of acetaldehyde and ethanol, and...

Soybean parent selection based on genetic diversity BABT
Carpentieri-Pípolo,Valéria; Pípolo,Antônio Eduardo; Silva,Flávio André Martins da; Petek,Marcos Rafael.
Thirty-four soybean lines were assessed for twelve traits. The genetic distances were estimates using multivariate techniques, to identify parents to be included in breeding programs for hybridization. Grouping by the Tocher method, from generalized Mahalanobis distances, divided the 34 lines into four groups. The most important agronomic traits, weight of seeds per plot, plant height, height of first pod and days to maturity were considered when recommending for crossing. The following crosses were recommended based on the genetic divergence and the key agronomic traits: lines 23, 10, 2, 27 and 25 (group I) with genotype 6 (group II) and genotype 16 (group III). Thus only ten crosses would be made, representing only 2% of the total crosses which could be...

Rimoldi,Fabrício; Vidigal Filho,Pedro Soares; Kvitschal,Marcus Vinícius; Gonçalves-Vidigal,Maria Celeste; Prioli,Alberto José; Prioli,Sônia Maria Alves Pinto; Costa,Tiago Ribeiro da.
In this work the genetic divergence among 14 sweet cassava cultivars was estimated by their morphological agronomic traits and RAPD molecular markers. The Tocher cluster analysis and the Nearest Neighbor Method were applied. The most dissimilar cultivars were Pão and Guaíra, Fécula Branca and Pão, and Pão and Caipira, while the most similar cultivar were the Fécula Branca and Branca 1, Branca 3 and Branca 1, and Guaíra and Branca 1. The Jaccard's coefficient showed that the most similar cultivars were Guaíra and Quarenta Quilos, while the most dissimilar were Branca 3 and Amarela da Rama Cinza. The divergence analysis indicated that promising crosses could be made between the Branca 3 cultivar and the Pão, Amarela 1, Fécula Branca and Amarela 2 cultivars...
