Ants obtained from trees of a "Jacareuba" (Calophyllum brasiliense) forest plantation in Central Amazonia by canopy fogging: first results Acta Amazonica
HARADA,Ana Yoshi; ADIS,Joachim.
Canopies of the locally occurring Amazonian tree species Calophyllum brasiliense. Camb. (Guttiferae, height 10 m) were fogged after dawn on the same day at five adjacent localities in a 20-year-old plantation at the Adolpho Ducke Forest Reserve near Manaus/Brazil, using natural pyrethrum (0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%), Baythroid (0.3%) and diesel oil, respectively. The 1152 ants collected represented 52 species, 17 genera and five subfamilies. The highest number of ant species was obtained with the synthetic pyrethrum Baythroid 0.3% and with natural pyrethrum 1.5%. About 46% of the total ant species were only collected in the first hour after fogging, and 17% only during the second hour, after trees had been heavily shaken. About 73% of the total ant specimens dropped...

Reproductive and feeding biology of the common lancehead Bothrops atrox (Serpentes, Viperidae) from central and southwestern Brazilian Amazonia Acta Amazonica
BISNETO,Pedro Ferreira; KAEFER,Igor Luis.
ABSTRACT The pitviper Bothrops atrox is a widely distributed and medically important snake in Amazonia. Given that the reproductive and feeding biology of snakes varies geographically, we aimed to characterize the natural history of individuals from the central and southwestern portions of the biome. We analyzed museum-preserved specimens collected in the region between the metropolitan areas of the Brazilian cities of Manaus and Porto Velho. We took morphometric measurements and performed the analysis of gonads and digestive tracts of 109 individuals. Females attain sexual maturity with larger body sizes. Adults of the species show pronounced sexual dimorphism in body size, with females being larger. The reproductive cycle, especially in males, appears to...

First records of myxomycetes in the North region of Brazil go back to the 19th century. Nevertheless, the myxobiota of this region is still largely unexplored, with only 42 species recorded, distributed in 20 genera and seven families. The objectives of this paper were to characterize the Myxomycetes collection of the Herbarium of the Federal University of Roraima (UFRR) and to add new records for the myxobiota of this State. The collection holds specimens collected in fragments of Open Ombrophilous Forest, Seasonal Semi-deciduous Forest, Riparian Forest, deforested areas and urban home gardens in the state of Roraima. The 157 exsiccates were analyzed and identified or redetermined based on identification keys, descriptions and illustrations. The...

Notes on Stenhelmoides and description of the true male genitalia of S. strictifrons Grouvelle, 1908 (Coleoptera: Elmidae) Acta Amazonica
FERNANDES,André S.; POLIZEI,Thiago T.S.; BOLDRINI,Rafael.
ABSTRACT The genus Stenhelmoides comprises 15 species spread over all Central and South America and its greatest species richness is clearly associated with Amazonian regions. Based on examination of type specimens and additional material, we describe and illustrate the true male genitalia of Stenhelmoides strictifrons, which had until now been incorrectly illustrated in the literature. We also report new records of the genus Stenhelmoides from Brazil and Guyana. In addition to pictures of the species’ habitus, we provide pictures of the type specimens of Stenhelmoides grandis, S. grouvellei, S. guyanensis; S. strictifrons and S. submaculus. Based on the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, we recognize additional paralectotypes for S. guyanensis...

Foliar anatomy of Rhynchosia spp. (Leguminosae, Papilionoideae) from Roraima state, northern Brazilian Amazon Acta Amazonica
FLORES,Andréia Silva; COSTA,Eduardo de Souza; DIAS,Germana Bueno.
ABSTRACT Comparative studies on the structure of foliar anatomy in four species of Rhynchosia from Roraima state (northern Brazilian Amazon) were carried out to identify additional morphological characters to support the definition of the systematic boundaries among the species. Fully expanded leaves, including the petioles, were collected from the upper nodes of a plant’s stem. Anatomical characters were observed in cross-sections of the middle portion of leaflets and petiole segments. Presence and distribution of glandular trichomes, continuity of sclerenchyma around the vascular bundles in leaflet blades and the conformation of the area between the two ridges of petioles were important characters to distinguish among the species of Rhynchosia. For the...

MENDES,Jone Clebson Ribeiro; SECCO,Ricardo de S.; ATHIÊ-SOUZA,Sarah Maria; SALES,Margareth Ferreira de.
ABSTRACT The first record of Phyllanthus chacoensis for the Brazilian Amazon is presented, based on a specimen from Rondônia state. The species can be recognized by its cauliflorous inflorescence, staminate and pistillate flowers with 4 sepals, devoid of a floral disk, 4 stamens, 2-carpellary ovary, drupaceous, ellipsoidal fruits, with one seed per locule. The species was previously known only from the central-western and northeastern regions of the Caatinga and Pantanal domains in Brazil. We provide a list of synonyms, a detailed description, an updated geographic distribution map in Brazil, data on habitat and conservation status, illustrations of its reproductive characters, and detailed photographs. We also propose a lectotype for the species.

Arthropods obtained from the Amazonian tree species "Cupiuba" (Goupia glabra) by repeated canopy fogging with natural Pyrethrum Acta Amazonica
ADIS,Joachim; HARADA,Ana Yoshi; FONSECA,Claudio Ruy V. da; PAARMANN,Wilfried; RAFAEL,José Albertino.
Two canopies of a widely distributed Amazonian tree species, Goupia glabra Aubl. (Celastraceae, height 38 and 45m) were fogged several times with 1% natural pyrethrum during the rainy and dry seasons (1991-1994) in the Adolpho Ducke Forest Reserve near Manaus/Brazil. Between 50 and 158 ind./m2 of arthropods were obtained per tree and fogging event. Hymenoptera, mostly Formicidae, and Diptcra dominated. A total of 95 ant species occurred on a single tree. Most ants were permanently foraging in the canopy and their recolonization after fogging seems to follow stochastic pathways. Data indicated an interaction between - 1) predating Formicidae and gall building Cecidomyiidae and - 2) Cecidomyiidae and the parasitic Hymenoptera.

Biometric relationships between body size and otolith size in 15 demersal marine fish species from the northern Brazilian coast Acta Amazonica
OLIVEIRA,Rory Romero de Sena; ANDRADE,Marcelo Costa; MACHADO,Fabiola Seabra; CUNHA,Élida Jesana Santana; FREITAS,Flaviane Souto de; KLAUTAU,Alex Garcia Cavalleiro de Macedo; GIARRIZZO,Tommaso; SAINT-PAUL,Ulrich.
ABSTRACT The relationships between fish size and sagitta otolith measurements were calculated for the first time for 15 species belonging to six families from the northern Brazilian coast. A total of 220 fish were sampled from the bycatch landed by the bottom-trawl industrial shrimp-fishing fleet between August and September 2016. All species had strong relationships between otolith measurements and fish total length with the coefficient of determination (r 2) ranging between 0.71 and 0.99. The variable most strongly related to fish total length was found to be the sagittal otolith length (OL) with 98% of the variability. These relationships are a useful tool to estimate length and mass of preyed fish from otoliths found in stomach contents of marine...

On occurrence, habitat specificity and natural history of adult tiger beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Cicindelinae) near Manaus, Central Amazonia, and key to the larvae of tiger beetle genera Acta Amazonica
ADIS,Joachim; PAARMANN,Wilfried; AMORIM,Maristela A.; ARNDT,Erik; FONSECA,Claudio R. V. da.
Over a seven year period from 1991 to 1997, 22 species of tiger beetles, representing nine genera, were recorded near Manaus, Brazil. In the Whitewaterfloodplains along the Rio Solimões-Amazonas (Ilha de Marchantaria), three diurnal species inhabit inundation forests and six species (two diurnal, four nocturnal) live in open areas. Data on their natural history and adaptation to living conditions in floodplains are presented. Fifteen species were located on non-flooded uplands (Reserva Florestal A. Ducke). Five diurnal species inhabit the forest floor, two species are canopy dwellers, and eight species (seven diurnal, one nocturnal) live in open areas on whitesand or laterite. Only one species, Pentacomia lacordairei, was found in both floodplain and...

NEST AND CHICKS OF Pseudoscops clamator (AVES: STRIGIDAE) IN THE HIGHLAND PLATEAU OF THE SABANA DE BOGOTÁ, COLOMBIA Acta biol.Colomb.
RIAÑO,Jeisson; PAQUI,María Fernanda; CÓRDOBA-CÓRDOBA,Sergio; SÁNCHEZ,Francisco.
ABSTRACT The Striped Owl (Pseudoscops clamator) has a wide geographic distribution despite that there is scarce information on its reproductive biology. In this study, we present the first published nesting records of P. clamator for Colombia. We provide data on its nesting habits and reproductive biology from observations between April and May 2013 of a nest found in a plantation of Eucalyptus globulus in Cajicá, Cundinamarca, Colombia. The ground nest is similar to those described from Argentina, Brazil, and Suriname; with a clutch of two where only one chick survived and left the nest after 25-30 days. We found in the owl diet, Brazilian guinea pig (Cavia aperea) and Eared Dove (Zenaida auriculata). Little is known about other species predated by the...

Nuevo registro de distribución de Cryptotermes brevis (Isoptera, Kalotermitidae) en Argentina Acta biol.Colomb.
CORONEL,JUAN MANUEL; LAFFONT,ENRIQUE; GODOY,CELINA; ETCHEVERRY,CLARA; OBREGÓN,MARCELA.
The first record of the West Indian drywood termite Cryptotermes brevis (Walker, 1853) in the city of Corrientes (Argentina) is reported. Several C. brevis colonies were detected inside a local deposit, from wooden crates used for carrying fresh fruits. The observed damage consisted of small rounded holes, partially hollowed wood pieces and presence of debris. The importance of weather factors and the type of material of vegetable and fruit containers in the colonization and dispersion of C. brevis in this region of Argentina are discussed. Illustrations of soldiers and reproductive C. brevis, and an updated map of the distribution of this termite in Argentina are given.

COLOMBIAN FROZEN BIODIVERSITY: 16 YEARS OF THE TISSUE COLLECTION OF THE HUMBOLDT INSTITUTE Acta biol.Colomb.
ARBELÁEZ-CORTÉS,Enrique; TORRES,María Fernanda; LÓPEZ-ÁLVAREZ,Diana; PALACIO-MEJÍA,Juan Diego; MENDOZA,Ángela María; MEDINA,Claudia Alejandra.
Collections of frozen tissue samples stand as keystone sources of molecular information to construct biodiversity knowledge, and are particularly challenged if they focus on megadiverse countries. In 1998 the Humboldt Institute (Instituto de Investigación de Recursos Biológicos Alexander von Humboldt) began a tissue collection of Colombian biodiversity (IAvH-CT) and the aim of this work is to present a diagnostic and an historical perspective for that collection, constructed by compiling information and experiences on its management as well as by organizing and curating the information of each catalogued sample. After 16 years, the IAvH-CT harbors 16,469 samples, which represent around 2530 species from 1289 genera, and 323 families of the Colombian...
