Tooth wear can affect body condition, reproductive success and life expectancy. Poor dental health is frequently reported in the zoo literature, and abrasion-dominated tooth wear, which is typical for grazers, has been reported in captive browsing ruminants. The aim of this study was to test if a similar effect is evident in captive rhinoceros species. Dental casts of maxillary cheek teeth of museum specimens of captive black (Diceros bicornis; browser), greater one-horned (Rhinoceros unicornis; intermediate feeder) and white rhinoceroses (Ceratotherium simum; grazer) were analysed using the recently developed extended mesowear method for rhinoceroses. Captive D. bicornis exhibited significantly more abrasion-dominated tooth wear than their free-ranging... |

This research evaluates the effect of the adult diet on the reproduction of Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner, Heliothis virescens (Fabr.), Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Noctuidae), Diatraea saccharalis (Fabr.) (Crambidae), Gymnandrosoma aurantianum Lima (Tortricidae) and Stenoma catenifer Walsingham (Elachistidae). Adults of all species were fed either water or a 10% honey solution. The egg viability for the 1st and 2nd egg masses, adult fecundity, longevity, number of mating and the ovigeny index (OI) (degree of ovarian maturation) were evaluated. Fecundity of A. gemmatalis and H. virescens was drastically reduced when females were fed only on water. Egg viability from both 1st and 2nd egg masses was variable between treatments. Females of A.... |

Considering the need to help the Cuban shrimp culture industry remain profitable, and the impact that feeding has on production costs, a research series was designed to evaluate new formulations that improve white shrimp Litopenaeus schmitti growth and reduce feeding costs. Five completely randomized experiments with 3 replicates per treatment were conducted. Juveniles (0.2-0.5 g) from the experimental farm were used. Trials were conducted at the Centro de Obtención y Cría de Larvas de Santa Cruz del Sur, Camaguey, and the Complejo Camaronero de Tunas de Zaza, Sancti Spiritus. In the first trial, 40-l plastic experimental units with 10 shrimp/unit were used to test the response of L. schmitti to the partial and total substitution (46, 59, 75, 88 y 100%) of... |

The feasibility of substituting soybean meal for ¢shmeal diets for juvenile white shrimp Litopenaeus schmitti (0.35 0.01g) was evaluated, and an adequate substitution level was determined. Five diets were evaluated using 46%, 59%, 75%, 88% and 100% substitution levels. Pellet water stability was signi¢cantly a¡ected by dietary soybean content (Po0.05). Increased soybean content produced lower pellet stability, ranging from a dry matter loss of 14^ 22% after a 2-h immersion, and 20^33% after an 8-h immersion. After 52 days, signi¢cant di¡erences (Po0.05) were found in shrimp weight, feed conversion ratio and protein e⁄ciency ratio. The values were 0.64^1.06 g, 2.8^7.9 and 0.45^1.21, respectively, for the three measurements. Overall, better results were... |

Azolla pinnata as a possible replacement of the palm kernel cake in the diet of Oreochromis niloticus. Compounded diets from a control with palm kernel cake replaced at varying levels of 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100% with the aquatic fern (oven dried Azolla pinnata) were fed to Oreochromis niloticus for twelve weeks to determine the acceptability and utilization of the fern in the diet, verify the nutritional influence of the fern on the performance of the fish and possible optimum palm kernel cake replacement level. The fish readily accepted the test diets. Better growth responses were recorded in the treatments containing Azolla pinnata meal. The best response was observed in the 20% replacement level, thereby suggesting an optimum replacement. However... |

The fish feed and nutrition in Nigeria was reviewed. Crab meal, shrimp head meal, tadpole meal, soybean meal were used for partial or total replacement of fish meal in the diets of cultivable fish species and no satisfactory result is yet obtained for 100% of replacement of fishmeal. The cost price of species specific diets so far developed is out of tune for profitable fish farming venture. Further investigation is required to develop cost effective species specific diets. The problem in feed and nutrition was highlighted and possible solutions were proffered. |

The use of juvenile Artemia as feed in aquaculture and in the pet shop industry has been getting more attention during the last decade. In this study, the use of selected bacterial strains to improve the nutritional value of dry food for Artemia juveniles and to obtain control of the associated microbial community was examined. Nine bacterial strains were selected based on their positive effects on survival and/or growth of Artemia juveniles under monoxenic culture conditions, while other strains caused no significant effect, significantly lower rates of survival and/or growth, or even total mortality of the Artemia . The nine selected strains were used to preemptively colonize the... |

Brazil produced in 2004, around 8 million tons of paper and 9,4 million tons of cellulose. Through the increasing production of paper and cellulose, the industries of this segment have generated a great amount of residues that requires viable future alternatives of disposal. Among these alternatives there is an application proposal of the cellulose residues in the forest growing. Thus, an experiment composed by 5 treatments and 4 repetitions was done entirely randomized. It was installed in 1996, in Arapoti Municipal District, State of Paraná, Brazil. These treatments received increasing doses of cellulose residues, such as: 0 (testimony), 20, 40, 80 and 100 t.ha-1. This soil was classified as red-yellow Oxysol of medium texture and it is under the... |
