Tooth wear in captive rhinoceroses (Diceros, Rhinoceros, Ceratotherium: Perissodactyla) differs from that of free-ranging conspecifics Naturalis
Taylor, L.A.; Müller, D.W.H.; Schwitzer, C.; Kaiser, T.M.; Codron, D.; Schulz, E.; Clauss, M..
Tooth wear can affect body condition, reproductive success and life expectancy. Poor dental health is frequently reported in the zoo literature, and abrasion-dominated tooth wear, which is typical for grazers, has been reported in captive browsing ruminants. The aim of this study was to test if a similar effect is evident in captive rhinoceros species. Dental casts of maxillary cheek teeth of museum specimens of captive black (Diceros bicornis; browser), greater one-horned (Rhinoceros unicornis; intermediate feeder) and white rhinoceroses (Ceratotherium simum; grazer) were analysed using the recently developed extended mesowear method for rhinoceroses. Captive D. bicornis exhibited significantly more abrasion-dominated tooth wear than their free-ranging...

Milano,Patrícia; Berti Filho,Evoneo; Parra,José R P; Oda,Melissa L; Cônsoli,Fernando L.
This research evaluates the effect of the adult diet on the reproduction of Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner, Heliothis virescens (Fabr.), Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Noctuidae), Diatraea saccharalis (Fabr.) (Crambidae), Gymnandrosoma aurantianum Lima (Tortricidae) and Stenoma catenifer Walsingham (Elachistidae). Adults of all species were fed either water or a 10% honey solution. The egg viability for the 1st and 2nd egg masses, adult fecundity, longevity, number of mating and the ovigeny index (OI) (degree of ovarian maturation) were evaluated. Fecundity of A. gemmatalis and H. virescens was drastically reduced when females were fed only on water. Egg viability from both 1st and 2nd egg masses was variable between treatments. Females of A....

Effects of different protein concentrations on longevity and feeding behavior of two adult populations of Ceratitis capitata Wiedemann (Diptera: Tephritidae) Neotropical Entomology
Plácido-Silva,Maria do Carmo; Silva Neto,Alberto M. da; Zucoloto,Fernando S.; Joachim-Bravo,Iara S..
The effects of protein intake on two adult male and female populations of Ceratitis capitata Wiedemann were assessed. One population consisted of flies reared for twenty years in the laboratory (Lab-pop); the other population consisted both of flies reared in the laboratory for approximately fifteen years and of the periodically introduced wild flies (Hybrid-pop). Three diets were tested: a no-yeast diet and two diets containing yeast (protein source) at the concentrations 6.5 g or 1.5 g per 100 ml diet. The parameters analyzed were: adult longevity, diet intake with and without yeast, and discrimination threshold for yeast. Protein intake increased Lab-pop adult longevity and did not affect longevity of the Hybrid-pop. Longevity in each population was...

Effect of sucrose ingestion on the performance of wild Anastrepha obliqua (Macquart) females (Diptera: Tephritidae) Neotropical Entomology
Fontellas,Tânia M.L.; Zucoloto,Fernando S..
Carbohydrates are the main source of energy for insects and the lack of these nutrients in the diet can cause serious damage to the biology of these arthropods. In order to better understand the effect of sucrose on the performance and dietary selection of adult Anastrepha obliqua (Macquart), the following experiments were carried out: 1) effect of different amount of sucrose on diet ingestion, longevity and egg production; 2) dietary selection that contains different amounts of sucrose, and 3) discrimination threshold for sucrose in adult individuals deprived or not of carbohydrates. The control diet showed the best results in relation to ingestion, longevity and egg production for these species, probably due to the fact that it presents an optimal...

Substitution of fishmeal with soybean meal in practicaldiets for juvenile white shrimp Litopenaeus schmitti (Pérez-Farfante & Kensley 1997) OceanDocs
Alvarez, J.S.; Hernandez-Llamas, A.; Galindo, J.; Fraga, I.; Garcia, T.; Villareal, H..
The feasibility of substituting soybean meal for ¢shmeal diets for juvenile white shrimp Litopenaeus schmitti (0.35 0.01g) was evaluated, and an adequate substitution level was determined. Five diets were evaluated using 46%, 59%, 75%, 88% and 100% substitution levels. Pellet water stability was signi¢cantly a¡ected by dietary soybean content (Po0.05). Increased soybean content produced lower pellet stability, ranging from a dry matter loss of 14^ 22% after a 2-h immersion, and 20^33% after an 8-h immersion. After 52 days, signi¢cant di¡erences (Po0.05) were found in shrimp weight, feed conversion ratio and protein e⁄ciency ratio. The values were 0.64^1.06 g, 2.8^7.9 and 0.45^1.21, respectively, for the three measurements. Overall, better results were...

Ennouri, R.; Mili, S.; Chouba, L..
