Minimizing flight time and fuel consumption for airborne crop spraying CIGR Journal
Kamal, Syed Shariq; Jackman, Patrick; Grieve, Bruce.
Abstract: With the world’s growing population and increase in urbanization, the requirement for optimized agriculture has increased.  Agricultural operations such as crop spraying and water management require rigorous monitoring of crops in order to identify the correct time to spray and irrigate the crops.  Thus managing vast properties require an affordable spraying strategy.  Advancement in computer processing speed and algorithms has made it possible to devise such strategies to optimize several agricultural operations.  One of those operations is to spray crops with pesticides and monitor crops.  This requires an airborne vehicle which can monitor and spray crops efficiently.  Several optimization techniques have been used in recent years to optimize...

ALVES,JODEL S.; SILVA,FERNANDA R. DA; SILVA,GABRIELI F. DA; SALVADOR,MIRIAN; KVITKO,KÁTIA; ROHR,PAULA; SANTOS,CARLA E.I. DOS; DIAS,JOHNNY F.; HENRIQUES,JOÃO A.P.; SILVA,JULIANA DA.
ABSTRACT Agricultural workers involved in the harvest of tobacco crops are regularly exposed to large quantities of pesticides. In order to determine how this exposure to pesticides induces genetic alterations in these workers, blood samples were obtained from 77 exposed individuals, as well as from 60 unexposed subjects. DNA damage was analyzed by the Comet assay and by the micronucleus (MN) test. The antioxidant profile was evaluated by activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), and the polymorphism of gene PON1 was used as a susceptibility biomarker. The content of inorganic elements in the blood samples was determined by PIXE analysis. Our results demonstrated that the damage frequency, damage index, the MN frequency, and the SOD activity were...

Validation of a liquid chromatography ultraviolet method for determination of herbicide diuron and its metabolites in soil samples Anais da ABC (AABC)
FELICIO,ANA LUCIA S.M.; MONTEIRO,ALESSANDRA M.; ALMEIDA,MARIANA B.; MADEIRA,TIAGO B.; NIXDORF,SUZANA L.; YABE,MARIA JOSEFA S..
ABSTRACT Diuron is one of the most widely herbicide used worldwide, which can undergo degradation producing three primary metabolites: 3,4-dichlorophenylurea, 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1-methylurea, and 3,4-dichloroaniline. Since the persistence of diuron and its by-products in ecosystems involves risk of toxicity to environment and human health, a reliable quantitative method for simultaneous monitoring of these compounds is required. Hence, a simple method without preconcentration step was validated for quantitation of diuron and its main metabolites by high performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection. Separation was achieved in less than 11 minutes using a C18 column, mobile phase composed of acetonitrile and water (45:55 v/v) at 0.86 mL...

Stoyanova,Stela; Yancheva,Vesela Slavcheva; Velcheva,Iliana; Uchikova,Ekaterina; Georgieva,Elenka.
ABSTRACTThe present study aimed to investigate the histological alterations in common carp gills caused by a fosetyl-Al and fenamidone based fungicide tested in laboratory conditions at 30, 38 and 50 mg/L concentration. In general, all the tested concentrations activated compensatory-adaptive mechanisms, which caused pathological changes in the fish gills. Results showed different histological alterations in the gill structure, which included lamellar lifting, edema, proliferation of the glandular cells and epithelium, covering the gill filament, fusion and degenerative alterations. Blood circulatory system showed vasodilatation of the secondary lamellae and aneurysms. Overall, there was enhancement of the gill histological changes, which was...

Direct effect of p,p'- DDT on mice liver BJPS
Arroyo-Salgado,Bárbara; Olivero-Verbel,Jesús; Guerrero-Castilla,Angélica.
ABSTRACT Contact with the pesticide dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (p,p′-DDT) can be the cause of various harmful effects in humans, wildlife, and the environment. This pesticide is known to be persistent, lipophilic, resistant to degradation, and bioaccumulive in the environment and to be slowly released into bloodstream. Growing evidence shows that exposure to DDT is linked to type 2 diabetes mellitus. Individuals exposed to elevated levels of DDT and its metabolite have an increased prevalence of diabetes and insulin resistance. To evaluate these possible relationships, experiments were performed on eight-week-old female mice, divided into three groups (n = 10 per group): Group 1 received a vehicle-control intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of sesame...

Study of the effect of Aliette on the activity of spinach (Spinacea oleracea L.) chloroplasts Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Almeida,Pedro; Coutinho,João P.; Rocha,João; Gomes-Laranjo,José.
Intensification of production in modern agriculture is frequently obtained thanks to the increase of pesticide applications and chemical fertilizers. However, the use of these products sometimes causes a reduction of crop productivity. We aimed to evaluate the impact of the fungicide Aliette on in vitro activity of chloroplasts of spinach (Spinacea oleracea L.). Transmembrane potential formation, PSII oxygen evolution and PSII photochemistry were analyzed. Our results showed that the recommended concentration (2.5 g L-1) of Aliette did not impair the photosynthetic apparatus. However, at higher concentrations (> 7.5 g L-1), reductions in thylakoid membrane potential and oxygen evolution were recorded, but with no evidence of photoinhibition.

Effect of Irrigation Levels on Dissolved Organic Carbon Soil Distribution and the Depth Mobility of Chlorpyrifos Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Junod,Julio; Zagal,Erick; Sandoval,Marco; Barra,Ricardo; Vidal,Gladys; Villarroel,Mario.
Water flows provided by irrigation systems may be associated with dissolved organic carbon (DOC) content in the soil solution and may modify the mobility of pesticides, such as chlorpyrifos (CHP). These compounds were analyzed under field conditions, evaluating their distribution in the soil profile under excessive irrigation in a Humic Haploxerand soil. The trial was carried out in soil columns located under the canopy of apple trees (Malus domestica Borkh.) in an orchard located in the Bío-Bío Region, Chile. The insecticide CHP was applied 120 g hL-1, and later the natural run off was collected from the foliage to the columns. Surface irrigation was used as a control, the equivalent to 4 L h-1 weekly, plus two treatments over the columns of 6 and 8 L h-1...

Diversification strategies in the pesticide industry: from seeds to biopesticides Ciência Rural
Pelaez,Victor; Mizukawa,Gabriel.
ABSTRACT: The pesticide industry has undergone a diversification process led by six leading companies (Monsanto, Syngenta, Bayer, Dow, DuPont, BASF) that control roughly 68% of the world market. This growth, initiated in the second half of the 1990s, occurred through deals and acquisitions of companies from the seed and biopesticide markets. This paper analyzes these diversification strategies, which have involved a capital mobilization process based on the exploitation of economies of scope and management of complementary assets. This aims to minimize the risks of investment in consolidated markets as well as in new ones.

Residual action of insecticides to larvae of Chrysoperla externa (Hagen, 1861) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) under greenhouse conditions Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Costa,Denilson Bezerra; Souza,Brígida; Carvalho,Geraldo Andrade; Carvalho,César Freire.
ABSTRACT - This work was designed to evaluate the residual action of the insecticides trichlorfon, triflumuron, endosulfan, fenpropathrin, chlorpirifos, tebufenozide and esfenvalerate, sprayed on cotton plants, to second-instar larvae of Chrysoperla externa (Hagen, 1861), under greenhouse conditions. The experimental design was completely randomized with ten replicates. Three larvae were released on each plant, in the 1st, 12th and 23rd day after pesticides spray. Tebufenozide and esfenvalerate were little persistent (class one), while trichlorfon, triflumuron and endosulfan were slightly persistent, decreasing the survival of C. externa larvae over 30%, up to 14 days after spray. Fenpropathrin and chlorpirifos caused mortality over 30%, up to 25 days...
