Strengthening research on organic food and farming: a strategic advantage for the EU and European countries Organic Eprints
Niggli, Urs.
There has been a constantly increasing consumer demand for organic foods over the last 20 years, which has accelerated again over the last 2 years in many European countries, including the new member states (Willer and Yussefi, 2006; Richter et al., 2006). But organic farming does not only offer a unique possibility for economic growth, it is also a highly relevant tool in order to solve simultaneously a range of problems relating to food production, environment, animal welfare, and rural development, as the Copenhagen Declaration stated in May 2001, a declaration signed by Ministers from governments all around Europe. The Copenhagen Declaration has been taken up by the EU Action Plan for Organic Food and Farming. The societal benefits of organic farming...

Are we making progress in mechanical weed control research? Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, Jesper.
This study investigates whether researchers’ perceptions of good research are in agreement with current research practice as reflected in Weed Research. A high degree of agreement is assumed to indicate progress. The instrument used to survey researchers perceptions was a questionnaire consisting of 28 items related to (1) research methodologies, (2) research priorities, (3) quality of publications, (4) future developments in technology and agriculture and (5) general attitudes to alternative and conventional agriculture. Questions about gender and personal research engagement were also laid down in the questionnaire. The questionnaire was sent out by e-mail to about 140 researchers on the mailing list of the EWRS – Physical and Cultural Weed Control...

How to construct a robust measure of social capital: Two contributions Organic Eprints
Bjørnskov, C.; Svendsen, G.T..
How to construct a robust measure of social capital? This paper offers two contributions. The first is an attempt to establish a broad social capital measure based on four indicators, the Freedom House Index, an index of perceived corruption from Transparency International, and scores on civic participation and generalized trust. This measure is then applied by comparing the level of social capital in 25 countries from Western and Eastern Europe. Our nine-cluster analysis shows that Switzerland has the highest score, followed by the Netherlands and Scandinavia. At the other end of the continuum we find post-communist countries and southern Italy. The findings for this specific sample suggest that institutions matter for social capital and the relationship...

Using agro-ecological zones to promote European collaboration in organic arming research Organic Eprints
Burgess, P J; Sannier, C A D.
Agro-ecological and other spatial information can be used to improve our understanding of organic farming research issues, inform the application of research from one area to another, and support collaboration and prioritisation within regional research programmes. Of the 25 organic farming research priorities identifi ed by the IFOAM EU Group in 2004, 15 were related to regional differences in agro-ecological conditions. The other priorities were potentially affected by spatial differences in political, institutional and socio-economic conditions. In relation to agro-ecological data, the capacity to identify i) general agro-ecological areas and ii) areas with specifi c agro-ecological advantage or stress seems particularly useful. The use of a geographic...

Reconciling scientific approaches for organic farming research: Part I- Reflection on research methods in organic grassland and animal production at the Louis Bolk Institute, The Netherlands Organic Eprints
Baars, Ton.
This dissertation focuses on the research question: what is peculiar to agricultural research when its purpose is to support the conscious development of organic agriculture? What approaches, designs and methods are used for such research? Since the 1990s the Louis Bolk Institute has become one of the important actors in the field of organic research and development. The author analysed the methodological aspects of seven case studies, each following the same format: background of the project, methods used, a reflection on the methods and, to a limited extent, agronomic results. Each of these sheds light on an aspect of the Louis Bolk Institute’s approach to research. Organic farming is experienced as a new paradigm and its research methods need to do...

In-Farm Research - a Swiss Perspective Organic Eprints
Fuchs, Nikolai; Flöter, Anne.
Conclusions The examination of the question, “why animals on farms” demonstrates the potential of “in-farm research” to gaining in-depth knowledge of the farm. The scientist’s observations and co-working on the farm are a method of choices that allows an accurate evaluation of the current situation of the farm, its atmosphere and the inner perspective of the farmers. It also lets the scientist contrast impressions from a personal point of view and to challenge statements made by the farmers. In addition, farmers were grateful for the “non-economic” assessments of the farm. As a consequence of this work, the reasons farmers give for keeping cows has become more conscious, and their decisions may strengthen their motives while also helping with public...

Hornkiesel zu Gurkenpflanzen im Gewächshaus. Einfluss der Anwendungshäufigkeit auf Produktion und Nährstoffaufnahme – ein Praxisversuch Organic Eprints
Rodas-Gaitán, Heberto A.

Organic Eprints
Braun, Charis; Häring, Anna Maria.
The agro-food sector faces many challenges today. To cope with these, an effective innovation system is needed. This study’s goal is to analyse the organic agro-food sector’s innovative ability and innovation requirements. Another focus is on the status quo of the research relating to the organic agro-food sector and the overall framework for research funding. Finally, starting points for improving how the interests of the organic agro-food innovation system are represented in Germany are identified. This concerns the communication within the innovation system as well as the external communication with institutions and individuals that influence the overall conditions for research in this field.

Second-order science of interdisciplinary research: A polyocular framework for wicked problems. Organic Eprints
Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted; Noe, Egon.
Context: The problems that are most in need of interdisciplinary collaboration are “wicked problems,” such as food crises, climate change mitigation, and sustainable development, with many relevant aspects, disagreement on what the problem is, and contradicting solutions. Such complex problems both require and challenge interdisciplinarity. Problem: The conventional methods of interdisciplinary research fall short in the case of wicked problems because they remain first-order science. Our aim is to present workable methods and research designs for doing second-order science in domains where there are many different scientific knowledges on any complex problem. Method: We synthesize and elaborate a framework for second-order science in interdisciplinary...

Sustainability assessment and complementarity Organic Eprints
Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted; Noe, Egon.
Sustainability assessments bring together different perspectives that pertain to sustainability to produce overall assessments, and a wealth of approaches and tools have been developed in the past decades. However, two major problems remain. The problem of integration concerns the surplus of possibilities for integration; different tools produce different assessments. The problem of implementation concerns the barrier between assessment and transformation; assessments do not lead to the expected changes in practice. We aim to analyze issues of complementarity in sustainability assessment and transformation as a key to better handling the problems of integration and implementation. Based on a generalization of Niels Bohr’s complementarity from quantum...

Methodological challenges for organic dairy cattle research and development: Practice based evidence rather than evidence based practice Organic Eprints
Baars, Ton.
Several recent studies on the results of organic dairy farmers show that this system is not always better than conventional (Brinkman and Winkler, 2006). Sundrum (2006) asks, if there are no differences in the quality between organic and conventional products, why should consumers pay a higher price for these products? There are several possible reasons why ODF does not show the outcomes in relation to animal health and welfare that we might expect from the stated intentions: 1. The economic situation of the farms, price and the lack of a suitable schemes to reward high quality milk production. 2. R&D support of ODF, how research topics and research methods are chosen, and the communication between researchers, advisors and farmers. 3. The power...
