| Trends in french household consumption are globally analysed and studied over the eighties. Household consumption is described according to its main components (fresh, deep - frozen, processed, non - processed fish or others sea products). The diverging changes in household consumption at home (products, species) and in the catering sector is stressed. | 15% of the shellfish production in France comes from natural deposits and the other 85% from farming. Years 1980-1990 showed a slight decrease in the shellfish production then a resurgence from 1985 onwards, an increase in the oyster production and a strong decrease in mussel production at the beginning of the 1980's followed by a resurgence due to the increase of open sea activity. In France, the shellfish market represents 300,000 tons, divided between oysters (40%), mussels (30%) and scallops (15%). Importations of mussels and scallops in order to supply the domestic market are important. On the other hand, external trade flows are very low as far as oysters are concerned: France is the only important market for oysters in Europe. (unverified OCR) |

| Background The occurrence of a small brackish water bloom-forming dinoflagellate belonging to the genus Peridiniopsis is reported for the first time from the Shatt Al-Arab River in Iraq. Based on the study of cell morphology, this taxon was attributed to the recently described Peridiniopsis minima, recorded so far only from the Jiulongjiang River, China. Results The description of P. minima was extended to include some previously unreported details of the thecal surface, apical pore complex, and sulcus structure using light and scanning electron microscopy. | A brief survey of the sea-food markets for the northern Mediterranean countries is presented, i.e. for Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Turkey. Then a comparative study between the markets belonging to the European Union is completed. Three of these countries (France, Italy and Spain) are characterised by a huge deficit in their external sea-products trade. Greece is almost balanced, but Portugal has been importing increasingly more over the last few years. About 45% of the imports come from the European Union. | The landed prices of the four main demersal species (whiting, saithe, haddock, cod) in France vary based on the amount landed, the average weight of the fish, imports and seasonal factors. Adapting an econometric model to the period 1974-1983 makes it possible to differentiate the four species as regards the determination of prices. - Cod seems like the key species, around which the prices of the three other species are determined. The visible consumption of cod is the highest (around 60,000 tonnes per year, more than half of which is imported). | The development of the intensive method for producing Manila clams (Ruditapes philippinarum) in marshes is the result of five years of research at the Ifremer station in Bouin. The method developed here produces a clam of commercial size in 19 months instead of two to three years. Batches of intensively farmed clams are more homogenous than batches of extensively farmed clams.
