Osmotic priming methodologies in relation to the physiological performance of rangpur lime seeds (Citrus limonia Osbeck) Rev. bras. sementes
Dantas,Ísis Barreto; Guimarães,Renato Mendes; Pinho,Édila Vilela de Rezende Von; Carvalho,Maria Laene Moreira de.
Several mechanisms have been used to promote rapid germination of citrus seeds and uniform seedling emergence. We evaluated the effects of osmotic priming on the physiological performance of Rangpur lime seeds (Citrus limonia Osbeck). Seeds were treated with 30 g of Captan and 10 g of Tecto 600 in 20-litre batches and stored, without drying, at 10 ºC and 50% relative humidity for periods of 3, 6 and 9 months. After each period, seeds were primed at 25 ºC, in the light, by immersion in Poliethylenoglicol (PEG 6000), potassium nitrate (KNO3) and 70% PEG 6000 plus 30% KNO3, all at an osmotic potential of -1.1MPa, for priming periods of 3, 6, 9 and 12 days. Percentage germination, tray emergence and the emergence rate index (ERI) were evaluated. Priming in PEG...

Alterations in the lipid and soluble sugar content of melanoxylon brauna seeds during natural and accelerated ageing Rev. bras. sementes
Corte,Viviana Borges; Borges,Eduardo Euclydes de Lima e; Gonçalves,José Francisco de Carvalho; Silva,Mirian Sousa.
The decay of seeds is irreversible and at best can only be delayed by applying techniques that reduce the velocity of the metabolic reactions involved. There is little information on the biochemistry of tropical forest tree seeds related to their storability. It was investigated the influence of the composition of lipids and soluble sugars of two storage compartments, the cotyledons and the embryonic axis, of Melanoxylon brauna Schot. (Leguminosae- Caesalpinioideae), a hardwood known as black brauna, seeds stored at 20 ºC for 0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months (natural ageing) and for 0, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours at 40 ºC (accelerated ageing). The levels of fatty acids and monosaccharides varied differentially in each of the embryo storage compartments. Changes in...

Lage,Moacir Evandro; Godoy,Helena Teixeira; Bolini,Helena Maria André; Oliveira,Raphael Rocha de; Rezende,Cíntia Silva Minafra e; Prado,Cristiano Sales.
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the occurrence of warmed-over flavour (WOF) in cooked tenderloin and the influence of alpha-tocopherol on its inhibition. A total of 24 animals were confined, 12 of which received 1200 mg/head/day of alpha-tocopherol acetate for 90 days. Longissimus dorsi muscle cuts (tenderloin) were obtained for sensory profile assessment by nine trained tasters. The tasters evaluated the taste of the meat based on four general and 18 specific attributes. The results of the evaluations were analysed with ANOVA, post-hoc tests of the means (Tukey tests), and principal component analysis (PCA). There was no significant difference in the WOF between the cuts of meat from the supplemented and non-supplemented animals....

Araújo,Alisson Vinicius de; Araújo,Eduardo Fontes; Amaro,Hugo Tiago Ribeiro; Santos,Ricardo Henrique Silva; Cecon,Paulo Roberto.
ABSTRACT Although used as green manure, one of the challenges the cultivation of Crotalaria juncea is the low availability of quality seeds in the market. The harvest at the right time contributes to the achievement of better quality seeds. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the storability and characterize the physical and physiological changes of the seeds harvested at different times. The statistical design was completely randomized with three replications. Treatments consisted of four harvest seasons and two storage periods (0 to 8 months). The samples were collected when the plants reached 40, 60, 80 and 100% of dried pods. The following characteristics were evaluated: time for drying, moisture content, dry matter accumulation, physical...

Approaches to the indirect evaluation of germination and vigour Scientia Agricola
Matthews,S..
In comparisons of six seed lots of different F1 hybrid cultivars of cauliflower with similarly high laboratory germinations (above 90%) separation in germination was achieved after controlled deterioration (C.D.) at 24% moisture content (m.c.) and 45 0C for 24 hours. This measure of vigour was related to the position of the lots on the seed survival curve and was highly predictive of the longevity of the lots when stored at 15% m.c. and 20 0C for 12 and 16 weeks. When each seed lot was deteriorated at 24% m.c. for increasing times (from 0 to 36 hours) a reduction in the subsequent percentage germination was seen, which, using probit transformed percentages, was significantly and linearly related to the leakage of electrolytes into seed soak water over 24...

Effect of harvesting time on seed physiological quality, chemical composition and storability of soybeans Scientia Agricola
Marcos-Filho,J.; Chamma,H.M.C.P.; Casagrande,J.R. R.; Marcos,E.A.; Regitano-d'arce,M.A.B..
Soybeans IAC-8 were harvested in the growth stages R7 and R8 commercial harvesting time and at two other subsequent times to compare their physiological and technological characteristics. Seeds were stored at two moisture levels, 12% and 15%, for 6 months. Germination and vigor (acelerated aging, electrical conductivity), oil and free fatty acids, peroxide and iodine values were evaluated periodically. As expected, the time of harvesting and seed moisture content affected seed performance, while oil content did not correlate to physiological quality as did acidity, peroxide value and iodine number.

Resilience of soil microbial activity and of amino acid dynamics to the removal of plant carbon inputs during winter Scientia Agricola
Avramides,Elizabeth J.; Christou,Matina; Jones,David L..
Many temperate agricultural soils have prolonged periods in the winter when plant carbon inputs to the soil are low. Soil maintained at low temperature in the absence of plants was used to simulate the conditions in a vineyard soil during winter. In a four month simulated overwintering period we showed that the concentration of dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen in soil solution slowly declined alongside heterotrophic soil respiration. Measurements of free amino acid concentrations and turnover indicated that the amino acid pool in soil was rapidly depleted but readily replenished throughout the four-month period. This indicates that the soil contained intrinsic reserves of labile C that was capable of supporting the soil microbial community in times of...

Shelf life of peaches treated with 1-methylcyclopropene Scientia Agricola
Kluge,Ricardo Alfredo; Jacomino,Angelo Pedro.
Peaches [Prunus persica (L.) Bastch] present reduced post-harvest shelf life, partially, due to their high respiratory rate and fast ripening. These processes are related to ethylene production, as well as its action. Peaches, cv. Aurora-1, were picked at two different ripening stages (mature green and ripe) and treated with 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), the ethylene's competitive antagonist, at concentrations of 0, 100, 300 and 900 nL L-1 for 12 hours at 25ºC. After treatment, the fruits were stored at room temperature (25ºC) for six days. Fruits treated with 1-MCP presented better firmness and less ground color loss than non-treated fruits. The 1-MCP antagonist reduced the development of fruit rot at the mature green stage, but not at the ripe one. The...

Storage is a major problem for foundation seed production. Occasionally, deterioration occurred before planting time and low germination was shown. The experiment on extending storability of foundation seed in hermatic condition was conducted in Phatthalung Rice Research Center between May 2011 – April 2014. The two varieties; Chiang Phatthalung and Phitsanulok 2 were used in this experiment. Seed moisture content of approximate 10 tons in each variety was reduced to 10.44 and 11.24% in Chiang Phatthalung and Phitsanulok 2, respectively. Seeds were then put in plastic bag and stored in hermatic condition (cocoon) compared to normal storage (control). It was found that Chiang Phatthalung and Phitsanulok 2 stored in cocoon showed 90 and 96% germination...

Nutrient solution salinity effect of greenhouse melon (Cucumis melon L. cv. Néctar) Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Da Silva Dias,Nildo; Dantas de Morais,Patricia Lígia; Abrantes Sarmento,José Darcio; Nogueira de Sousa Neto,Osvaldo; Palácio,Vilauba Sobreiro; de Freitas,Jair José Rabelo.
Abstract In Mossoró-RN, which is part of the semi-arid region of Brazil, a large part of the country’s melon production is concentrated, whose great potential is currently limited by water quality due to salt concentration. Therefore, the objective of this work was to investigate the use of saline nutritive solutions in the irrigation of greenhouse melon (Cucumis melo L. cv. Néctar) culture in coconut fiber. The experiment was carried out using a randomized block design with a 5 x 2 factorial arrangement, with four replications, where the treatments consisted of nutritive solutions with five salinity levels (1.25 - control, 1.43, 1.86; 2.96 and 4.86 dS m-1) and for two different times to evaluate fruit quality parameters (at harvest and after 12 days of...

Influence of packaging on the quality of Brazil nuts Acta Amazonica
LORINI,Alexandre; WOBETO,Carmen; ROSA,Claudineli Cássia Bueno da; HATEM,Tatiane Andressa; BOTELHO,Sílvia de Carvalho Campos.
ABSTRACT The Brazil nut is an important commodity that grows in the Amazon rainforest and is notable for its high nutritional value. However, the effect that packaging has on product shelf-life is unclear. This study evaluated the microbiological and nutritional quality of unshelled Brazil nuts packed in (a) nylon and polypropylene under vacuum, and (b) in polyethylene terephthalate and polyethylene aluminized films. The nuts were stored for nine months under natural environmental conditions. The most probable number of total and thermotolerant coliforms and Escherichia coli, and counting of molds and yeast were determined in the unshelled nuts shortly after collection and every three months during storage. Moisture, lipids, ash, neutral detergent fiber,...

Element storage in spores of Gigaspora margarita Becker & Hall measured by electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) Acta Botanica
Cruz,Andre Freire.
The storage structures of spores of Gigaspora margarita Becker & Hall, an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus, were analyzed by a transmission electronic microscope (TEM) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). The spores were hydrated, cryofixed using high pressure freezing, submitted to freeze substitution, embedded and prepared for TEM observations. The cryotechniques revealed that the storage structures in the spores are composed of lipids, electron dense granules (EDG), protein bodies and glycogen particles. The EELS detected the presence of nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) in these storage structures and in Bacteria-like organisms (BLO). Some amount of P was detected in the vacuoles and in BLO. The TEM and EELS techniques indicate the presence of...
