Relationship between environmental variables and growth of Pteria colymbus (Mollusca Bivalvia: Pteriidae), at three cultivation depths Boletín de Investigaciones
Freites,Luis Felipe; Guevara,Miguel; Márquez,Adrián; Revilla,Jormil; Narváez,Mariela; Lodeiros,César.
ABSTRACT We studied the influence of environmental variables associated with three water depths (2, 6 and 10 m) on shell growth, soft tissues dry mass (STDM) and survival of the Caribbean winged oyster Pteria colymbus (Roding, 1798). chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), dissolved oxygen, particulate organic matter (POM) and temperature were studied at each depth. Oysters were placed in 135 plastic baskets with five individuals in each basket. Three baskets at each depth were chosen at monthly intervals for measurements of biometric parameters, biofouling, and survival. At the end of the study, dry mass of the individuals grown at 10 m was significantly lower (Kruskal-Wallis non-parametric test KW, P < 0.05) with the highest values of STDM corresponding to oysters...

Association of Sea Surface Temperature and the abundance of the Brown Booby (Sula leucogaster) according to the state of development in the Gorgona National Natural Park Boletín de Investigaciones
Perlaza-Gamboa,Alejandro; Giraldo,Alan; Payán,Luis Fernando; Estela,Felipe A..
ABSTRACT Variation in the physicochemical conditions of the sea can influence the distribution and abundance of seabirds by affecting the trophic structure of the pelagic environment. For this reason, we aimed to evaluate the association between the abundance of three developmental stages (chicks, juveniles, and adults) of the Brown Booby (Sula leucogaster etesiaca) and the sea surface temperature (SST) and its thermal anomaly (ANOM) in Gorgona Island, Colombian Pacific. These trends were assessed by performing cross-correlations and generalized linear models. Each developmental stage showed a different abundance tendence linked to SST and ANOM variation. It is suggested that these trends are due to the fact that increased sea temperature may be associated...

Surviving probability indicators of landing juvenile magellanic penguins arriving along the southern Brazilian coast BABT
Rodrigues,Sandra Carvalho; Adornes,Andréa Corrado; Santos Filho,Euclydes Antônio dos; Silva Filho,Rodolfo Pinho; Colares,Elton Pinto.
The aim of this work was to monitor and study the hematocrit and weight of juvenile penguins, with and without oil cover, found alive along the southern coast of Brazil, after capture, as well as before eventual death or release. Released juvenile penguins showed higher weight and hematocrit (3.65 ± 0.06 kg and 44.63 ± 0.29%, respectively) than those that died (2.88 ± 0.08 kg and 34.42 ± 1.70%, respectively). Penguins with higher hematocrit and weight after capture had higher mean weight gain than their counterparts with smaller hematocrit and weight after the capture. Besides, juveniles with higher hematocrit and weight after the capture had higher survival rates, independent of the presence or absence of oil. The results suggested that juveniles covered...

Inadequate timing between corticosteroid and antibiotics applications increases mortality due to sepsis BJID
Fadel,Marcus Vinícius Telles; Repka,João Carlos; Cunha,Cláudio Leinig Pereira da; Leão,Maria Terezinha C..
This study tested the hypothesis that the use of corticosteroids prior to antibiotics can lower the mortality rate in severe infections by S. aureus or Gram-negative bacilli, using an animal model. This study was a prospective and controlled study, placed in a university laboratory. Seven hundred and sixty mice distributed into three groups (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae infected). The interventions in each group were: I) infection control (intra-peritoneal); II) treatment solely with antibiotics (teicoplanin or amikacin); III) antibiotics administered prior to the corticosteroid (methylprednisolone); IV) antibiotics administered after the corticosteroid. Mortality in the E. coli group, subgroup I: 100%; subgroup II: 55%...

Matida,Luiza Harunari; Marcopito,Luiz Francisco; Succi,Regina Celia de Menezes; Marques,Heloisa Helena de Souza; Della Negra,Marinella; Grangeiro,Alexandre; Hearst,Norman.
Brazil was the first developing country to provide free, universal access to antiretroviral treatment for AIDS patients. The Brazilian experience thus provides the first evidence regarding the impact of such treatment on the survival of perinatally acquired AIDS cases in the developing world. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used medical record reviews to examine characteristics and trends in the survival of a representative sample of 914 perinatally acquired AIDS cases in 10 Brazilian cities diagnosed between 1983 and 1998. RESULTS: Survival time increased steadily and substantially. Whereas half of the children died within 20 months of diagnosis at the beginning of the epidemic, 75% of children diagnosed in 1997 and 1998 were still...

Survival of AIDS patients and characteristics of those who died over eight years of highly active antiretroviral therapy, at a referral center in northeast Brazil BJID
Melo,Ladjane Santos Wolmer de; Lacerda,Heloisa Ramos; Campelo,Eduardo; Moraes,Emanuel; Ximenes,Ricardo Arraes de Alencar.
Introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy has resulted in a significant reduction in morbimortality and significant changes in the causes of death among HIV/AIDS patients. For this reason, it has become essential to monitor survival and causes of death. We constructed a survival curve based on 597 adult patients notified as AIDS cases between 1997 and 2004, at the Hospital das Clínicas, Federal University of Pernambuco, Recife, Brazil. Among those patients, 150 (25%) progressed to death by December, 2005. Of these, 119 were studied in detail. The data were collected from notification files of the State Health Department and the State Mortality Information System, and were complemented by analysis of medical records. These 597 patients had a...

Enteroparasitosis prevalence and parasitism influence in clinical outcomes of tuberculosis patients with or without HIV co-infection in a reference hospital in Rio de Janeiro (2000-2006) BJID
Neto,Luanda M.S.; Oliveira,Raquel de Vasconcellos Carvalhaes de; Totino,Paulo Renato; Sant'Anna,Flavia Marinho; Coelho,Viviane de Oliveira; Rolla,Valeria Cavalcanti; Zanini,Graziela M..
Tuberculosis and intestinal parasites affect primarily low social and economic level populations, living clustered in precarious habitational settings. One of the interesting aspects of this interaction is the parasitism influence in cellular response to tuberculosis. In the present study, we evaluated the prevalence of enteroparasitosis in tuberculosis patients, HIV-infected and non HIV infected, and we observed the influence of helminth presence in the response to tuberculin skin test (TST) and tuberculosis clinical outcomes. From 607 clinical records reviewed, 327 individuals met the study inclusion criteria and did not present any exclusion criteria. The prevalence of enteroparasites observed was 19.6%. There was no significant association among TST...

Quick adaptation of Ralstonia Solanacearum to copper stress to recover culturability and growth in water and soil BJM
Ascarrunz,Sergio Daniel Moreira; Natsuaki,Tomohide; Honjo,Hitoshi; Fukui,Ryo.
Cells of Ralstonia solanacearum were exposed to Cu in distilled water, and the resulting Cu-stressed non-culturable cells were inoculated to natural (non-pasteurized) and pasteurized soils in order to examine their culturability and recovery. Exposing the cells to 20 µM CuSO4 produced transitory non-culturable cells, which exhibited a remarkable recovery in culturability after incubation in the solution for 36 h, reaching a density near the initial level by 108 h. To determine whether such non-culturable cells actually "resuscitated" or multiplied after adapting to Cu toxicity, growth curves were constructed in order to contrast the rates of increase in culturable cell numbers between Cu-stressed or non-stressed inocula. Additionally, fresh non-stressed...

Survival of Listeria monocytogenes in low acid italian sausage produced under brazilian conditions BJM
Degenhardt,Roberto; Sant'Anna,Ernani S.
Dry sausages have been considered ready-to-eat products with low risk of causing listeriosis due to the hurdles created during the manufacturing process such as low pH and a w, high salt concentration and presence of lactic acid bacteria (LAB). However, several studies have detected survival of Listeria monocytogenes in these products and also shown that process parameters, LAB and L. monocytogenes strains directly influence the results. In this work, survival of the pathogen in sausages prepared with three different formulations (one standard formulation, one formulation added of Lactobacillus plantarum and one added of 2% sodium lactate), using the manufacturing process usually employed in Brazil, was evaluated. Naturally contaminated sausages presented...
