The research project "Organic Revision" is part of the 6th Framework Program of the EU and tries to support the European Commission improving the regulation 2092/91 about organic farming. As part of one work package organic farmers have been con-sulted about their ethical values concerning organic farming. This work has been done as whole in five countries. Here are presented the results of Austria only. Different focus groups discussed according to a guideline and filled in some question-naires. The mentioned values have been classified. Organic farmers are aware of their ethical values for their life and their profession. The ethic of farming, the social and ecological communities and the respect of others (e.g. lower developed countries) are important... |

A risk-based inspection system might improve the efficiency of the organic farming certification system and ultimately provide a basis for increased competitiveness of this sector. This requires the definition of an effective inspection procedure that allows statistical evaluation of critical risk factors for noncompliance. In this article, we present a study based on data from selected control bodies in five European countries that is aimed at determining the feasibility of risk-based inspections in the organic sector according to the data that are currently routinely recorded. Bayesian networks are used for identification of the factors that can affect the risk of noncompliance. The results show that previous/concurrent noncompliant behavior explains... |

Odborná monografie se zabývá problematikou kontroly a certifikace v ekologickém zemědělství. Nejprve pojednává o systému inspekce v Evropské unii. Následuje rozbor certifikačního systému v České republice. Popsány jsou druhy kontrol a vlastní průběh certifikace. V textu je dále uveden systém certifikace bioprodukce a nastíněn stručný vývoj certifikačních procesů. V přílohách pak čtenář nalezne výtahy z nejdůležitějších právních norem. |

For the 7th consecutive year a session on organic certification of out-of-home operations was held at the BioFach in Nuremberg, February 2010. The focus on organic catering in Europe is a growing movement. A number of standards and statements are presented thus adding to the sharing of information, experiences and inspiration across borders and organisations. It is hoped that this exchange will facilitate beneficial contacts between those involved in the setting up and development of national and private catering certification standards. The mass catering sector is growing and therefore attracts increasing attention at pan‐European level; The EU regulation for organic food and farming (EC No 834/2007) which came into force on January 1st, 2009, obliges... |

With the continuous growth of the organic sector and the challenges and opportunities that come with that growth, the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements, IFOAM, came to the conclusion that the basic values, the fundamental underpinning for organic agriculture, needed reflec-tion and discussion. From 2003 to September 2005, IFOAM and its membership were engaged in a partiapcatory process to articlulate the Principles of Organic Agriculture. The process received its finishing touch during the Federation’s General Assembly, September 2005. The Principles serve to both inspire the organic movement in its full diversity, and to articulate the meaning of Organic Agriculture to the world at large. In this paper the process and the result is... |

Organic farming shares many characteristics with other new social movements that emerged in the late twentieth century concerned with environmental conservation and animal rights. In common with these, organic farming has to confront the issues of incorporation and integration that arise when seeking mainstream political support. In the UK, the Organic Conversion Information Scheme (OCIS) and the Organic Farming Scheme are examples of the incorporation and integration of the organic farming movement into government policy. Delivery of the first phase of the Organic Conversion Information Scheme in Wales between 1996 and 2001, involved the setting up and development of a database of all farmers in Wales who requested advice and information under the scheme.... |

There is currently no common understanding of how to measure sustainability in the food sector. To close this gap, the FAO has developed Guidelines for Sustainability Assessments of Food and Agriculture Systems (SAFA), which were published as a test version in June 2012. The Guidelines describe about 60 sustainability objectives, which are classified into 20 themes and four dimensions: Good governance, Environmental integrity, Economic resilience, Social well-being, as well as assessment procedures. This paper presents an approach for the sustainability assessments of enterprises in the food and agriculture sector in full compliance with the SAFA Guidelines. We developed an indicator-based tool (“SMART”), which is applicable at all food supply chain... |

This study uses qualitative and quantitative data as well as household panel data regarding actual purchases of organic food in order to examine organic consumer profiles and recent developments of organic demand in Denmark. Six different segments of Danish households are identified, of which three are either indifferent or negative towards organic foods. Three distinct positively minded segments are also identified. These positively minded segments hold a very high share of all organic food sales on the Danish market and are also driving demand forward. This market can thus be said to be highly polarised. It can also be said to have matured insofar as positively oriented segments that differ in their food involvement, shopping behaviour and levels of... |

The FP7 CERTCOST project has the overall objective to give recommendations to the public authorities and private actors in the whole organic certification chain on how to improve the organic food certification systems in terms of efficiency, transparency and cost effectiveness. According to the project description (the Description of Work, or DoW) this will be done based on a scientific economic in depth analysis of the certification systems from the farmer to the consumer in 5 EU countries (the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom), plus Switzerland and the candidate country, Turkey. To safeguard that the CERTCOST objectives, work plan and methodology is in line with the expectations of key stakeholders from all levels of the... |
