Bebars, Mi; Lasserre, G; Hoai, Tl.
Annually exploited communities from the Nile delta and two nearby lagoons (Manzalah and Edkou) were monitored from 1962 to 1989. The changes in community structure were analysed as a function of two events: fishing pressure growth (motorized fishing vessels) which increased by a factor of 19 between 1952 and 1962; and the construction of the Aswan Dam, which was built between 1965 and 1969, reducing the flow of the Nile by 90 %. Before the construction of the dam, increased sea fishing pressure led to a decline in landings from 33,832 tons in 1962 to 8,522 tons in 1969, but with no structural change in the exploited community. However, following completion of the dam in 1969, the community structure changed and a significant correlation was detected...

Study of Wool Characteristics in the Aranese Ovine Breed International Journal of Morphology
Parés,P.M; Jordana,J; Pérezgrovas,R.
To date, no ethnological study on the wool characteristics of the Spanish Aranese ovine breed has been published. Fifty three animals belonging to this breed are tested as fleece samples. Each sample is analyzed for fleece type and length, yield by isoalcohol scouring, fiber length for each kind of fiber, variation in fiber diameter, and proportions of non-medullated and medullated or kemp fibers. Fiber length appears shorter than that previously reported for the breed by other authors. Fleeces of the Aranese sheep breed can be described as square, simple, "semi-open" and short with a relatively high yield by isoalcohol scouring and low medullation levels, thus indicating good potential quality and greater suitability for potential processing than other...

Population dynamics and damage caused by the leafminer Liriomyza huidobrensis blanchard (Diptera: Agromyzidae), on seven potato processing varieties grown in temperate environment Neotropical Entomology
López,R; Carmona,D; Vincini,A M; Monterubbianesi,G; Caldiz,D.
The leafminer Liriomyza huidobrensis Blanchard is considered a key pest for potatoes in Argentina. Population dynamics and leaf damage caused by the leafminer on seven selected potato processing varieties were assessed at Balcarce during the 2002 and 2003 growing seasons. Adult population dynamic was monitored using yellow sticky traps, while leaf damage (punctures and mines) was assessed using a damage index scale from low to severe. Liriomyza huidobrensis adults were present throughout the growing season and the population increased along crop development. The same was true for all varieties regarding larval damage, being low on early crop stages and severe late in the season. Varieties were grouped in two different categories according to damage scale...

Hansen, J.E.; Buratti, C.C.; Garciarena, A.D..
Advise on Biologically Allowable Catch (BAC) for Southern Argentine anchovy (Engraulis anchoita, 41° S-48° S) during 2012. To assess the evolution since 1990 and the current status of Argentine anchovy Southern stock, an Age Structured Population Model (ASPM) was used. Modeling of catches according to a four-month period pulses allowed to predict annual yields so as to get them close to the nominal catches officially recorded. Some independent indexes of stock abundance (eight acoustic estimates of total biomass and five estimates of spawning stock biomass obtained with the Daily Egg Production Method) and the proportion of individuals per age group assessed during the same cruises were used to calibrate the fitting. No stock-recruitment function but a...

OceanDocs
Bertolotti, M.I.; Hernandez, D.R.; Pagani, A.N.; Castañeda, M.F..
In order to better understand the behaviour of the trawler processing freezer fleet in the Argentine Sea, an analysis of yields and structural characteristics for the 1989-98 period was carried out. The relationship between structural variables and yield expressed in kilos per day was explained with a simplified asymptotic model. The fleet was divided into four homogeneous strata. Common hake is the target of stratum I and stratum II which are deeply affected by overfishing of the species. As of 1993, in stratum III, common hake was replaced by other pelagic and demersal species, mainly hoki. In fleet stratum IV southern blue whiting and hoki were caught. Catches of the latter increased during the last three years.

OceanDocs
Errazti, E.; Hernandez, D.R.; Bertolotti, M.I.; Buono, J.J..
This chapter includes an economic analysis of the small scale fleet of the Mar del Plata harbour, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. The original study was carried out at the request of the Skippers Fisheries Society to find out the relative efficacy and efficiency of homogeneous groups of associated vessels. Based on the information available, to tune the observed data, assess the relative efficacy and estimate the relative economic efficiency of the fleet, an ad hoc model was designed. Length, gross registered tonnage, engine power and number of crew members were considered and analyzed as structural variables for 1995, 1996 and 1997. No changes in variables for the period were observed so, the efficacy and efficiency analysis was carried out for the year...

Report of the INIDEP working group on assessment of hake (Merluccius hubbsi) north of 48° S (Southwest Atlantic Ocean) OceanDocs
Bezzi, S.I.; Cañete, G.R.; Pérez, M.; Renzi, M.A.; Lassen, H..
The assessment covers hake between 34° and 48°S (Argentina and Uruguay), excluding Golfo San Matías. Total international landings and Argentine catch-at-age and effort data available for the 1983-1991 period allowed an analytical assessment. Tunning of the VPA was made using Laurec-Shepherd analysis and Extended Survivor analysis. The results of these analysis are congruent with the information about the state of the stock. VPA biomass estimates are aound 2.1 and 2.7 mill. Tonnes, which are similar to those calculated through surveys. The Spawning Stock Biomass estimated for 1991 is considered to be within limits where the stock shows stable recruitment. At the present effort level, yield and Spawning Stock Biomass appear to remain stable. Management...

Bertolotti, M.I.; Pagani, A.N.; Hernandez, D.R.; Buono, J.J..
In order to increase knowledge about the ice chilling fleet and to explain the relationship between structural variables and yields, a simplified model was developed. The fleet was classified in three homogeneous strata. Stratum I includes the smallest ships, with a catch composition equal to that of the large coastal fishing vessels. The stratum yields decreased in 1997 and 1998. Strata II and III have common hake as the main target of catches. Yields of those strata showed a continuous decrease as of 1994/1995. Therefore, the species was replaced by other fish originally caught by other fleets. These two last strata are more vulnerable to overfishing of traditional coastal and demersal fisheries.

Ommastrephes bartramii: a potential target for the squid fishery in the Southwest Atlantic OceanDocs
Brunetti, N.E.; Ivanovic, M.L..
Six exploratory cruises on board of the Japanese RV "Shinko Maru N°3" were carried out between 1997 and 2002 to obtain data on red squid (Ommastrephes bartramii)in the oceanic area of the SW Atlantic off Argentina and Uruguay (33° S-42° S/43° W-55° W). Between 10 and 32 jigging stations were performed each year during the night at depths of 80-200 m. Positive catches were registered in the whole area investigated with yields ranging between 0.01 and 2.03 kg/ (hour*line)and 0.001-2.26 individuals/(hour*line). Total catches oscilated between 1,426 kg in 2002 and 2,825 kg in 2000 and sea surface temperature at the fishing stations between 7.5° C and 24.5° C. Yields higher than 1 individual/ (hour*line)were registered at surface temperatures of 22° C-24° C....

Cordo, H.D..
Catch per unit of effort (CPUE)analysis of the Argentine surimi fleet is a routine work to estimate abundance indices of southern blue whiting Micromesistius australis. Several analysis of this fishery suggest that, as of the years when intensive fishing by foreign and national fleets started, the resource has suffered a marked decline. When calculating the CPUE it is common practice to take into acount only trips and fishing operations with high catches of the target species fishing operations directed to other species are not considered to avoid underestimations. Therefore, in order to include a percentage of catch of the analyzed species higher than a subjective value, available data are filtered. However, because only operations with high yield are...

OceanDocs
Bezzi, S.I..
Hake (Merluccius hubbsi) stock assessments and management recommendations made as of 1986 for the Argentine Sea, are summarized. The surplus production models used allowed to diagnose an overdimensioned fleet and to establish that, as of 1983, population densities were lower than the optimum values. In 1990 it was mentioned that total landings exceeded the Maximum Sustainable Yield and that the fishing effort was above the optimum exploitation level. The Virtual Population Analysis was first applied in 1993 and, for the 1986-1991 period, a 25. increase in fishing mortality, significant reductions of total and reproductive biomasses and a first catch length of 25 cm were detected. Besides, proposals were made to enhance accuracy of future assessments. In...

Irusta, G.; Hernandez, D.R..
The status of hake (Merluccius hubbsi) resource south of 41°S in the Argentine Sea was evaluated with the Biomass Dynamic Model of Pella and Tomlinson. Results indicate that the population was overexploited and in a low biological production level (B99 BMSY1 because, as of 1998, catches always exceeded the surplus production corresponding to each year and the (MSY) Maximum Sustainable Yield. In 1993 increase of landings accelerated declination of biomass. For 1999 the MSY was estimated at 244,773 t and the replacement catch at 147,389 t. Landings corresponding to 1998 surpassed the MSY in 145,000 t and the replacement catch in 242,611 t.

Patagonian scallop (Zygochlamys patagonica King & Broderip, 1832): A new fishery in the Argentine continental shelf. Yield-per-recruit model was applied to the stock of castañeta (Cheilodactylus bergi)in the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (Southwest Atlantic, among 34° and 39°30' S), in order to estimate the range of F0.1 values resulting from the uncertainty in the parameters of the model. Simulations with variations in natural mortality and recruitment were carried out, in order to estimate the risk of overfishing associated with different fishing mortality levels. The criterion that spawning stock biomass be mantained over 35. of its unexploited level was adopted. For an optimum age of first capture of 4 years, the range of calculated F0.1...

Flota pesquera Argentina. Evolucion 1960-1998 con una actualizacion al 2000. OceanDocs
Bertolotti, M.I.; Verazay, G.A.; Pagani, A.N.; Errazti, E.; Buono, J.J..
The analysis of the Argentine fishing fleet (SW Atlantic) evolution as of 1960 allows to explain the major causes of expansion, the crisis in the fisheries and the structural changes of the fleet during the 90's. Different fleet classification criteria focused on fishing capacity, fish landing composition, yields and productivity indices are described. The expansion cycles were associated to the incorporation of fishing vessels, while the 1960-1989 crisis originated in domestic and international economic crisis and changes in the strategy pattern of the fishing countries. The latter was related to overfishing of traditional coastal and demersal fisheries and to the full exploitation of resources such as squid, blue whiting and toothfish incorporated to the...

OceanDocs
Cordo, H.D..
Two dynamic production models were applied to assess the status of ling Genypterus blacodes stock in the SW Atlantic. The simplest (biomass dynamic model)and a more complex one (structured production model) were fitted with commercial CPUEs as abundance indices. Ling is one of the most important demersal fishes in Argentine waters. It is a demersal fish found between 35°and 55°S that shows the highest concentration in summer, between 42°and 48°S. In winter, schools disperse over the whole range of distribution. Argentine ling fishery started developing in 1986 when catches surpassed 15000 mt/year to stabilize, in recent years, at around 23000 mt/year. The species is caught mainly as by-catch by trawlers with bottom net that direct their effort to hake...
