Wirtschaftlichkeit von Bioethanol – Produktion und Produktionskosten im nationalen und internationalen Vergleich AgEcon
Henniges, Oliver.
In this article the profitability of the bioethanol production in Germany is analysed under consideration of the international competition. Therefore, the production costs of bioethanol from wheat and beet in Germany as well as from sugar cane and corn in other representative countries are compared. Based on this, the competitiveness of imported as well as domestic bioethanol against gasoline on the German market are analyzed and the maximum payable feedstock price for sugar beet is calculated. The calculations lead to the result, that, despite the implemented mandatory blending, further cost reductions for the production of bioethanol in Germany are required in order to achieve competitiveness against imports, whereas the utilization of bioethanol is...

The furniture industry of the Metropolitan Region of Belém provides many jobs opportunities and help to reduce the environmental impacts of sawmill, given that the shavings and wood residues of these firms are used as raw material. Factorial analysis was used to estimate the index of competitive performance (ICP) and to determine the competitive position of the firms in the furniture industry. The results showed that most of the furniture firms were located in an intermediate competitive level, which is due to the limiting factors such as lack of workforce, low technological level, difficult access to credit and low level of horizontal and vertical integration in the supply chain. The final results showed that only one, among the furniture firms, achieved...

A taxonomy survey of decision support systems in agriculture AgEcon
Manos, Basil D.; Ciani, Adriano; Bournaris, Thomas; Vassiliadou, I.; Papathanasiou, J..
This paper presents the results of a research concerning the type, category and fields of applications of Decision Support Systems (DSS) and their contribution to decision-making in agriculture, mainly in the fields of planning and management of farms, farm regions and agricultural resources. More specifically, the paper includes a taxonomy survey that has been based on an analysis of all published works on applications of DSS from 1987 to 2001, as well as a categorized presentation of these applications. The relevant classification of DSS is made by treating subject (theoretical DSS or applicative), the source of publication (proceedings, scientific journal or dissertation), the type of DSS (Decision Support System, Expert System or Knowledge Based DSS),...

A Review of Environmental Valuation in Australia AgEcon
Sinden, Jack A..
Australian attempts to value the environment began at least 40 years ago. Since then, environmental protection and natural resource management have become major national issues. But have the methods of valuation kept pace with the importance of the issues that they are meant to resolve? Can environmental and resource values actually be measured? This paper chronicles, reviews, and assesses the valuations of 40 years and more than 100 Australian authors.

IMPACTS OF LIBERALIZING THE JAPANESE PORK MARKET AgEcon
Wahl, Thomas I.; Hayes, Dermot J.; Johnson, Stanley R..
The Japanese pork market is protected by a complex set of restrictions, including a variable levy and an import tariff. The combination of these policies distorts the quantity, price, and form of Japanese pork imports. An important issue relevant to the liberalization of the Japanese pork market is the accurate measurement of the price wedge between Japanese and world pork prices. The analysis indicates that the tariff equivalent of the price wedge over the 1986-88 period was 44%. If the tariff equivalent of the price wedge is reduced over a ten-year period, Japanese pork imports are projected to increase by over 39% initially and by over 215% compared to baseline projections by the year 2000. Producer welfare can be maintained by a deficiency payment...

Producer price and price transmission in a deregulated Ethiopian coffee market AgEcon
Worako, Tadesse Kumma; van Schalkwyk, Herman D.; Alemu, Zerihun Gudeta; Ayele, Gezahegn.
Coffee producers in Ethiopia have historically received a very small share of the export price of green coffee. Reasons that are often mentioned are heavy government intervention and high marketing and processing costs. Prior to 1992, government regulation of the domestic coffee market in the form of fixed producer prices and the monopoly power of the Ethiopian Coffee Marketing Corporation put a substantial wedge between the producer price and the world price of coffee by imposing an implicit tax on producers. The domestic coffee marketing system in Ethiopia was liberalised after 1992, which was envisaged to have a positive effect on producer prices and price transmission signals from world markets to producers. This paper, with the help of Cointegration...

The Demand for Food Away from Home: Do Other Preferences Compete with Our Desire to Eat Healthfully? AgEcon
Stewart, Hayden; Blisard, Noel; Jolliffe, Dean; Bhuyan, Sanjib.
Health-oriented government agencies have had limited success at encouraging Americans to eat a healthful diet. One reason may be that other preferences compete with our desire to eat healthfully. We explore the effect of consumer preferences on the demand for food away from home, including frequency of eating out and choice of outlet type. Preferences for convenience and ambience are found to influence behavior. Furthermore, omitting these variables from econometric models can bias the estimated effect of preferences for a healthful diet.

DERIVED DEMAND ELASTICITIES: MARKETING MARGIN METHODS VERSUS AN INVERSE DEMAND MODEL FOR CHOICE BEEF AgEcon
Marsh, John M..
Three methods of calculating the derived elasticity of demand for Choice slaughter beef are used: (a) a traditional marketing margin approach, (b) a modified marketing margin approach, and (c) an econometric, inverse demand model approach. The first method is more restrictive than the second but both tend to overestimate beef price flexibility and revenue changes. The econometric model, though an incomplete demand system, yields demand elasticities that are more consistent with marketing flexibility but are less pronounced than estimates of a complete system. An example using a two-year revenue forecast compares slaughter revenue adjustments based on the first margin method with those based on structural demand models.

UTILITY MEASUREMENT FOR THOSE WHO NEED TO KNOW AgEcon
Halter, A.N.; Mason, Robert.
A practical technique for estimating decision-makers’ utility functions by survey or group methods is explained and illustrated. Results from a survey of 44 Oregon farmers are reported. Risk attitudes of respondents are related to farm and decision-maker characteristics. Regression analysis found age, education, and percentage of land ownership, either separately or jointly, to be statistically significant variables related to risk attitude. Risk attitudes measured from the estimated utility functions were found to be uniformly distributed across risk aversion, neutral and preference. Even though further empirical work is needed, it appears that the distribution of risk attitude among the human population cannot be predicted from a single variable.

Ethnic marketing possibilities and its ethics issues AgEcon
Sas, Annamaria; Kozma, Agota.
This paper focuses on the possibilities of ethnic marketing and its ethic connections. The differences found in our face-to-face interviews and analysing questionnaire data will provide opportunities for Hungarian small enterprises. Targeting ethnic groups for marketing purposes results in ethical difficulties. In Hungary, ethnic marketing is yet an inexperienced concept. Based on these ideas the authors examine the ins and outs of using ethnic marketing in case of Germans in Hungary. Consumers with German ethnic attitude really want German products and brands. At the same time, enterprises have to emphasise the products’ “Germanness” and character in a better/stronger way because this can help for better consumer decision making.

Sensitivity of WTP Estimates to Definition of ‘Yes’: Reinterpreting Expressed Response Intensity AgEcon
Kobayashi, Mimako; Rollins, Kimberly S.; Evans, M.D.R..
Willingness to pay (WTP) estimation typically involves some strategy for mapping nondichotomous contingent valuation (CV) responses onto a dichotomous yes/no dependent variable. We propose a new approach to selecting which responses qualify as ‘yes.’ We apply the proposed method to polychotomous CV data for preventative land management programs in the Great Basin. We also estimate WTP using other methods of response recoding found in the literature. By contrasting the results under different approaches, we demonstrate how and why WTP point estimates vary across recoding methods and discuss the comparative advantages of our more generalized recoding approach that is based on predicted probabilities of ‘yes’ responses.

Das neue Gentechnikgesetz – ein Gentechnikverhinderungsgesetz? Eine umweltökonomische Analyse der haftungsrechtlichen Neuerungen im Gentechnikgesetz AgEcon
Becker, Alexander; Holm-Muller, Karin.
In this article, legal consequences of the new German genetic engineering act are analyzed. In addition environmental economic analysis is presented of those parts of the act that introduce new litigation regulation to farmers. The different kinds of external costs arising from genetic engineering of plants and their allocation to different actors are considered. The paper focuses on the costs resulting from the postulated coexistence of conventional/organic farms and users of biotechnology. Excessive liability of farmers can be avoided, if the producers of genetically modified seeds accept any litigation claims against farmers. Furthermore, negotiations between neighbouring farms can be an option to keep the costs of damage prevention at reasonable levels.

RISK PERCEPTION AND THE ANALYSIS OF RISK ATTITUDES AgEcon
Quiggin, John C..
Risk has long been recognised as an important feature of the environment facing farmers. In recent years the von Neumann-Morgenstern expected utility theory has been used to analyse decision making under risk. However, many people behave in a manner inconsistent with the expected utility theory. One widely suggested explanation is based on subjective probability distortion. A number of attempts to incorporate this phenomenon into utility theories have been made. In this paper, the problems of analysing subjective probability distortion are discussed. Evidence from a survey of farmers' risk attitudes undertaken in conjunction with the 1977 BAE Australian Agricultural and Grazing Industries Survey is analysed in the light of this discussion.

A análise das características empreendedoras versus premissas da escola da estratégia empreendedora: um estudo multicasos no setor de alimentação AgEcon
Barros, Francisco Savio de Oliveira; Forte, Sergio Henrique Arruda Cavalcante.
The managerial strategy thematic has been the object of a growing concern and studies in the academic literature, however few studies have been observed about the enterprising strategies. Thus, the main objective of this study is to identify the main characteristics of the process of strategy formation in companies of the enterprising context, relating them with the conceptual premises of the Enterprising Strategy School, as presented by Mintzberg et al (2000), using a field verification in small load companies in the food sector, with head offices in the city of Fortaleza. For this exploratory-descriptive study, accomplished during 2003, the primary data were collected through semistructured interviews with entrepreneurs and managers of the companies and...

THE PRICE COMPETITIVENESS OF HUNGARIAN WINES IN EUROPEAN UNION MARKETS AgEcon
Bozsik, Norbert.
In the case of homogeneous goods (corn, eggs, milk, etc.) the price differential between products is the strongest determinant of success in market competition. In these days, however, it is more and more the highly processed foodstuffs that land on the consumer’s table. Wine is one of these. This study appraises the price competitiveness of Hungarian wines on EU markets. The question is to what extent do price differences determine the competitiveness of wine on potential markets? Or does a lower price give a real advantage to a special product like wine? Or is the demand for a product due to factors other than price? Our findings show that most Hungarian wines, except bottled white quality wines, are compatible on EU markets as far as prices are...
