The Fifth EUMETSAT User Forum in Africa was organised in Dakar, Senegal, by EUMETSAT, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Ministry of Equipment and Transport of the Republic of Senegal. The Forum was held from 30 September to 4 October 2002 with over 160 participants representing most African and European countries. Representatives of the following African Intergovernmental Regional Associations were present: Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC) and Southern Africa Transport and Communications Commission (SATCC), Communauté Economique et Monétaire de l'Afrique Centrale (CEMAC), as well as representatives of the... |

From 281 females with fork lengths ranging from 43 to 73 cm and ripe ovaries, the batch fecundity of skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) from the western part of the Indian Ocean was studied. Gilson's fluid, used as a preservative and dissociative agent for oocytes, has a strong and fast action (5 days) on the shrinkage of these oocytes. Counts made with a Dollfus box on sub-samples of dissociated oocytes show that, within a single sexual maturity period (February), the fecundity of skipjack tuna is the same whatever the geographic area: Mozambique Channel and South of Seychelles Islands. On the other hand, although sexual activity is noted for skipjack tuna throughout the year, individual fecundity changes with the season within a single area. This... |

Based on histological analysis of gonads taken from 616 specimens of skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) in the western part of the equatorial Indian Ocean, a thorough description of all stages of maturity and cells is given at different stages of ovogenesis. Different phases of cell development were defined for each stage, and size of cells is given. A comparison of visual and histological determinations of maturity stages is made. Fish sizes and ages at which mass maturation is observed, sex ratio and its variation for different size groups in the area studied are suggested. Mass onset of maturity (50%) is observed when females reach 43 cm and males 40 cm in length and 1.5 years of age. Assessment of portioned fecundity is given. The spawning period of... |

This document attempts to develop an overview of the future needs for tuna research that should be recommended by the IOTC. Because of the spectacular increase of the tuna catches in the Indian Ocean during the last 15 years, it is necessary to conduct active research on the major stocks, giving a high priority to all research that will allow a reliable assessment of the stock status. A general problem in the tuna research conducted in the Indian Ocean is the lack of large-scale tagging programs. Such programs should be a priority in future Indian Ocean tuna research. Other research should also be conducted simultaneously upon various biological parameters which are fundamental to stock assessment. The fishery associated with artificial floating objects,... |

We analyzed the acoustic data obtained with a multibeam echosounder during an oceanographic survey abroad the “R/V Miguel Oliver” in january-february of 2010. The aim was mapping the sea floor of the continental slope of the uruguayan Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The acoustic data were processed with MB-System software, and then incorporated into a Geographic Information System (Quantum GIS). We obtained 3 m for 3 m grid files to describe small submarine structures (mounds and pockmarks), and also a topographic map of the entire area to describe large submarine structures (submarine canyons and landslides). When we analyzed the topography of the entire area we identified 4 submarine canyons and the beginning of a fifth in the south end. We also observed... |

Lake Victoria, the second largest lake in the world, has undergone successive dramatic changes since 1920's. Intensive non-selective fisheries, extreme changes in the drainage basin of vegetation, industrialization, agricultural developments, dams, introduction and invasion of exotic fish species that led to the destruction of the native and endemic components followed by a progressive build-up of physical and chemical changes in Lake Victoria have identified substantial increases in chlorophyll concentration and primary productivity as well as decreases in silica compared to values measured 30 years ago. Present sulphate concentration (0.1 mg/L) are lower than the lowest values reported from other large lakes in the... |

A proper understanding of inshore marine ecosystems cannot be obtained without a thorough knowledge of marine vegetation. This paper summarises our knowledge of species diversity patterns of marine macroalgae in Sub-Saharan Africa, highlighting gaps. In Tropical East Africa the seaweed floras of Somalia and Mozambique are not well known. In Tropical West Africa, only a small number of countries are well-collected, although recent advances, including web-based systems, are ensuring that the information which is available can be more easily accessed. South Africa and Namibia have quite well documented seaweed floras, although detailed collections, especially in the subtidal, or detailed studies of taxa, particularly using molecular methods, anywhere in the... |

Two experiments were accomplished in (P. argus) lobster juveniles, for evaluate unilateral and bilateral eyestalk ablation. First one with initial weight 120 g the juveniles reach (237 g and 146 g) in 180 days, survivals (75% and 72%), NBI (50.4 and 27), growth rates (0.731 g/day and 0.231 g/day), SGR (0.47%/day and 0.16%/day) respectively; significant differences were found between unilateral and bilateral ablation on final weights, SGR and NBI. On a second experiment, using unilateral ablation with initial weight of 30 g the juveniles reach 130 g in 154 days, survival 66.6%, NBI 58.7, growth rate 0.651 g/day and SGR 0.95%/day. Significant differences appear between final weight, SGR, and NBI with control. The unilateral ablation shows the best records... |

The effects of artificial diets were studied with different store times, between 1 week and 6.5 months in juveniles culture shrimps in fattening phase. The artificial diets were stored at environmental temperature. The quality of raw materials and finished products were controlled during the storage time with physical, chemical, organoleptical and entomological analysis also it was evaluated the growth, protein efficiency, the food conversion factor and the survival of the shrimps. The nutriments affected during storage were the proteins, lipids and the % of free fatty acids, due fundamentally to the contamination with acarids and insects. It was found that the growth and protein efficiency of juveniles shrimps decreased with the age of the feed, without... |

Fish genetics research conducted in two research centers and other institutions in Côte d’Ivoire is presented. Most of this research so far conducted focused on population genetics. In addition to electrophoresis characterization, morphometric and meristic characteristics were used to evaluate and describe fish population in Côte d’Ivoire. Recent genetic research tools, such as microsatellites, restriction fragment length polymorphism of mitochondrial DNA techniques have been used. Research activities dealt mainly with tilapias (Sarotherodon melanotheron, Oreochromis niloticus and O. aureus) and Siluriformes (Clarias gariepinus, C. anguillaris, Heterobranchus longifilis, H. bidorsalis and Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus) which were mostly used for their... |
