Seychelles tuna bulletin: Year 2009 OceanDocs
Data used to generate the tables and figures presented here are based on daily catch and effort forms (logbooks) returned from fishing vessels that are licensed to fish in the Seychelles EEZ and for purse seiners, as well as from data collected via the tuna sampling programme conducted during transshipment in Port Victoria. Sometimes there are delays in these being received at SFA, especially for longliners that often spend up to a year at sea, and for purse seiners the delays are usually during and just after the second quarter of the year when most vessels are fishing in the Mozambique Channel and are not necessarily using Port Victoria for transshipment.

Environment and Sustainable Development Issues and Policies OceanDocs
Souissi, A..
The Blue Plan scenarios, published in 19891, showed that the protection of the Mediterranean Sea, its shores and coastal regions, could not be achieved through action carried out on the sea or on the coastal regions alone. On the contrary, it depended mainly on the overall development, environment and physical planning policies followed by the Mediterranean countries at the national level. “ Decisions on the bulk of environmental protection will be made (or not) largely at the level of the state. Essential legislation and standards will have to be established at this level, as well as the necessary mechanisms and institutions with the financing and competence to apply them... ”. The Blue Plan then invited the neighbouring countries to change direction and...

Effects of water hyacinth on water quality of Winam Gulf, Lake Victoria OceanDocs
Osumo, W..
Lake Victoria is the second largest freshwater body in the world by surface area. It is important for the livelihood of people living in the area. The lake is currently facing many problems, one of which is macrophyte encroachment mainly the water hyacinth, Eicchornia crassipes. Winam Gulf is a large inlet from Lake Victoria that extends into Kenya. In order to study the effects of water hyacinth on water quality in the gulf, measurements of water properties were made in the north-eastern corner of the gulf, when the area was covered with hyacinth in March 2000. The hyacinth was then cut and dumped on the bottom during the period June to beginning of August when all water hyacinth had been removed with measurements being made again in July. Water...

The meeting of the Joint Steering Group for the IODE Ocean Data Portal and the WIGOS Pilot Project for JCOMM was held at the WMO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, from 18 to 19 September 2008. The goal of the meeting was to review the project plan, the draft implementation plan, discuss the business plan, capacity-building issues, and address the core deliverables of the WIGOS Pilot Project for JCOMM and the IODE Ocean Data Portal. In particular, the Meeting addressed interoperability issues between the ODP and the WIS, and between other ocean data systems and the WIS. The Meeting agreed that interoperability with the WIS would be mainly achieved through: (i) ocean data centres contributing to the ODP and (ii) ODP becoming fully interoperable with the...

A preliminary study of the aetiology, epizootiology and pathology of 'rusty-yellow' skin discolouration of tilapia species (Oreochromis niloticus and Tilapia zilli OceanDocs
Oladosu, H.A.; Ayinla, O.A.; Ajiboye, M.O.; Egbomuche, G.; Onuoha, G.C..
An upsurge in the prevalence of rusty-yellow discoloration of the skin of the two tilapia species, being cultured at the African Regional Aquaculture Centre (ARAC), gave a basis for an urgent clinical and epizootiological studies of the condition. The studies were therefore carried out along with the performance of some catfishes in polyculture with Oreochromis niloticus, under the integrated poultry cum fish farming system. It was observed that this condition affects the tilapia species only, and the antemortem, and postmortem examination revealed that the discolouration is restricted to the surface of the cutaneous tissue; affecting the underside of the exposed part of the scales, the fins and the skin flap covering the scale pockets, mostly in adult...

(Contribution to the biological study of blue shark (Prionace glauca) incidental catch by the Spanish surface longline fisheries for swordfish in the western Mediterranean). Blue shark (Prionace glauca) bycatches in the Spanish surface longline fisheries in the Mediterranean targeting swordfish (Xiphias gladius) from 1999 to 2001 represented 2% of the total catch. Information from onboard observers during 861 fishing sets in 26 longliners indicated that the highest catches were made in area 4-35000 (Alboran Sea) which represents 75.6% of the total observed catch of blue shark. The observed CPUE are from 5.5 to 34.1 kg/1000 hooks. Mean size at capture (LJFL) was 141.6 cm (SD=35.88). The proportion of females from the total was 0.5.

EUCARE Comoros 2002 OceanDocs
The EUCARE teams original proposal was to map the uncharted reefs of Belo sur Mer in western Madagascar, but due to the current political situation at the time, it would have been impossible for EUCARE to fulfil all objectives laid out before the expedition commenced. The team followed up their contingency plan to the Comoros archipelago1. The archipelago comprises of four isolated volcanic islands in the Western Indian Ocean, located to the east of Northern Mozambique and North West of Madagascar. The Marine Park of Moheli (PMM) is situated in the southern extremity of Moheli, the smallest and youngest of the Islands in the Comoros archipelago2,3 (see figure 1). It covers an area of 404 km2 along the south and west coasts of the island and extends from...
