Phytotoxic potential of Drimys brasiliensis Miers for use in weed control Agronomy
Anese, Simoni; Gualtieri, Sonia Cristina Juliano; Grisi, Patrícia Umeda; Jatobá, Luciana de Jesus; Arduin, Marcos.
This study aims to evaluate the phytotoxicity potential of leaf and root extracts of Drimys brasiliensis on the germination and seedling growth of Panicum maximum and Euphorbia heterophylla and its influence on metaxylem cell size in the seedling roots of the latter specie. The leaf and root extracts were fractionated by partition chromatography, and the hexane and ethyl acetate fractions obtained from each organ were evaluated at different concentrations for phytotoxic activity in several bioassays. In seedling growth tests, we compared the effects of these fractions with the herbicide oxyfluorfen. The hexane fraction of the root extracts showed a higher inhibitory potential on the germination and growth of weeds and reduced the average size of the...

Horta, Andrea Carla Skraba; UEM; Santos, Humberto Silva; UEM; Scapim, Carlos Alberto; UEM; Callegari, Osni; UEM.
Beet root planting methods and the most appropriated type of trays for the production of beet-root seedlings, Beta vulgaris var. conditiva (Chenopodiaceae) are analyzed. Experiment evaluated characteristics of seedling growth and production. Treatments consisted of direct sowing, bare-root seedlings and seedlings grown on 128, 200 and 288-cell trays. Cells with the smallest substratum volumes showed an inferior performance in number of leaves and dry matter weight of the seedlings' aerial part. However, no effect of the substratum volume was reported in the root development. When all treatments were harvested at the same date, direct sowing resulted in larger total and commercial production. However, when the cycle was prolonged until the plants of each...

A sampling plan and spatial distribution for site-specific control of Sphenophorus levis in sugarcane Agronomy
Pavlu, Franz Arthur; Molin, José Paulo.
Sphenophorus levis has become a major pest of sugarcane plantations in Brazil, causing significant losses in productivity. Few studies have been conducted on the spatial distribution of this pest in the field, which is essential for the development of sampling plans. We aimed to characterize the spatial distribution of S. levis in sugarcane, defining a reliable, practical and feasible sampling plan, as well as generating application maps for production areas, allowing for comparison of the consumption of inputs in a conventional system with site-specific application. The study was conducted in areas around Piracicaba, Brazil. First, we conducted sampling to evaluate the best sampling density to characterize the spatial dependence. The results showed that...

Di-nitrogen fixation at the early and late growth stages of soybean Agronomy
Hamawaki, Raphael Lemes; Kantartzi, Stella K..
Soybean derives a significant portion of the required nitrogen (N) from the symbiosis with rhizobia bacteria. However, information on the available genetic variation for N2 fixation capacity in different growth stages of soybean is limited. The objective of this study was to investigate the N2 fixation capacity of 22 soybean lines compared with that of non-nodulating and supernodulating checks at the early and late growth stages and identify the most informative traits for selection. Two cycles of greenhouse experiments were carried out to estimate the percentage of N derived from the atmosphere (%Ndfa) as well as 10 different traits related to N2 fixation. The results showed that %Ndfa was significantly different among the lines at the early and late...

Gamma-ray computed tomography to evaluate changes in the structure of a clayey soil due to agricultural traffic - doi: 10.4025/actasciagron.v33i3.4727 Agronomy
Pires, Luiz Fernando; Universidade Estadual de Ponta Grossa.
A first generation gamma-ray computed tomography (CT) equipped with a 137Cs source was used to investigate changes in soil structure due to agricultural machinery traffic. Core samples with volume of 55 cm3 were collected at the surface (0-10 cm) of a Brazilian clayey soil. Significant alterations in soil structure occurred after two passages of tractor wheels, with important decreases in soil porosity. CT data allowed a continuous analysis of soil bulk density and also soil porosity distribution for 1.25 and 1.20 mm layers, which cannot be provided by traditional methods commonly used in soil physics.
