A Role of Eco-Efficiency in Farm Management? Case Study of Life Cycle Assessment of Australian Grains AgEcon
McGregor, Murray J.; Van Berkel, Rene; Narayanaswamy, Venke; Altham, Jim.
In the past agriculture has relied on the application of "end-of-pipe" or preventative solutions to environmental problems brought on by the management and production processes that it has adopted. This has led to outcomes and approaches that are single media and process or facility focused. The recent trends in the broader industrial sector have been towards the adoption of eco-efficiency approaches to environmental concerns that have a strong business focus on sustainability, look at multiple media and adopt a lifecycle and systems approach.

Evaluating the Efficiency of Crop Index Insurance Products AgEcon
Deng, Xiaohui; Barnett, Barry J.; Hoogenboom, Gerrit; Yu, Yingzhuo; Garcia, Axel.
Index crop insurance products can eliminate the asymmetric information problem inherent in farm-level multiple peril crop insurance. Purchasers of index insurance products are, however, exposed to basis risk. This study evaluates the efficiency of various index insurance products to reduce farm yield loss for representative corn farms in southern Georgia. Index insurance products considered are based on county yields, cooling degree days, and predicted yields from a crop simulation model.

Collaborative Masters Program in Agricultural and Applied Economics for Eastern, Central and Southern Africa AgEcon
Bashaasha, Bernard.
Program Genesis: Since the 1970s, African economies have under-performed and incomes have declined. Similarly, the agricultural sectors have malfunctioned and agricultural production shrunk despite over two-thirds of the population being dependent on agriculture for survival subjecting them to food insecurity, reduced incomes, massive poverty, unemployment and unsustainable resource utilisation. The decline in agricultural performance was brought about by numerous factors, including markets dynamics that tended to protect the agricultural products of developed nations at the expense of developing economies; persistent institutional weakness and market failures in Africa; poor linkage of policy results to policy making and implementation; poor understanding...

Effect of Income Diversification Strategies on food Insecurity Status of Farming Households in Africa: Result of Analysis from Nigeria AgEcon
Agbola, P.O.; Awotide, D.O.; IKPI, A.E.; Kormawa, P.M.; Okoruwa, Victor O.; Babalola, D.A..
This study links food insecurity status of farming households in the study area to their income diversification strategies. Data for the study were collected from 400 farming households in Osun State of the southwestern Nigeria. Households were classified into four categories based on how they obtain a living. Descriptive statistics, Cost of Calorie Function (COC) and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were used to analyze the data. Income diversification strategies of the households involved – combinations of crop production with livestock enterprises; crop production with off farm activities; off farm activities with livestock enterprises and crop production only; at 60.0%, 10.0%, 8.0%, and 22.0% of households respectively. Income diversification strategies...

OPTIMIZING THE ALLOCATION OF AGRICULTURAL R&D FUNDING: IS WIN-WIN TARGETING POSSIBLE? AgEcon
Roseboom, Johannes; Diederen, Paul; Kuyvenhoven, Arie.
Appeals for targeting agricultural R&D in developing countries more explicitly to the needs of poor smallholders in marginal areas are often countered by arguments of efficiency. Others, however, taking a political economy perspective, argue that there is a bias in the selection of agricultural R&D projects towards commercial farmers in the better agricultural areas. In this paper, we try to bring the two perspectives together and illustrate how they interact. We analyze R&D budget allocation assuming two distinct R&D opportunity curves – one for poor smallholders and one for large commercial farmers. We find that, in contrast to the actual allocation of research resources, an efficient allocation (i.e., equalizing the marginal rate of...

ANÁLISE DAS POLITICAS PÚBLICAS DE INCENTIVO À OVINOCULTURA AgEcon
Bitencourt, Mayra Batista; Sorio, Andre Macieira; Cruzetta, Eduardo.

Precision Irrigation in South Africa AgEcon
Dennis, H.J.; Nell, Wilhelm T..
The Republic of South Africa covers an area of 122 million hectare of which 18 million hectare is potential land for cultivation. Eight percent of the potential arable land are under irrigation, which accounts for nearly half of the water requirement in South Africa. With a population of 42 million and an estimated annual population growth of 1,7%, urbanisation and industrialisation will increase the pressure on the availability of water resources and the allocation thereof in South Africa. The purpose of the National Water Act, Act 36 of 1998, is to ensure that the nation's water resources are protected, developed, conserved, managed and controlled. Agricultural production under irrigation in South Africa retrieves water from water resources such as...

Determinants of World Demand for U.S. Corn Seeds: The Role of Trade Costs AgEcon
Jayasinghe, Sampath; Beghin, John C.; Moschini, GianCarlo.
The United States is a large net exporter of corn seeds. Seed trade, including corn, has been expanding but its determinants are not well understood. This paper econometrically investigates the determinants of world demand for U.S. corn seeds with a detailed analysis of trade costs impeding exports flows to various markets. Trade costs include costs associated with distance, tariffs, and sanitary-phytosanitary (SPS) regulations imposed by foreign countries on U.S. corn seed exports. SPS policy information comes from the Excerpt data base of USDA-APHIS. The analysis relies on a gravity-like model based on an explicit specification of derived demand for seed by foreign corn producers. A SPS count variable is incorporated as a shifter in the unit cost of...

Spatial Competition in Private Labels AgEcon
Richards, Timothy J.; Hamilton, Stephen F.; Patterson, Paul M..
Previous studies find that private labels increase retailers' bargaining power with manufacturers and allow retailers to price discriminate. We use a spatial discrete choice model to show that retailers also use store brands to create market power through store differentiation, but not as a means of building market share.

MEASURING THE EFFECT OF RURAL RESIDENCE ON INDIVIDUAL EMPLOYMENT OUTCOMES: IS RURAL RESIDENCE ENDOGENOUS? AgEcon
Fisher, Monica G.; Foster, Kenneth A..
This paper examines the relationship between annual hours worked and rural residence for a sample of working-age (18-64 years) householders using 1993 Panel Study of Income Dynamics data. The basic question we address is whether and to what extent failure to account for rural residential choice biases the measured effect of rural residence on labor market outcomes. Results from a single equation model that assumes rural residence is exogenous finds no statistically significant relationship between annual hours worked and living in a rural area. By contrast, a simultaneous model that accounts for the possibility that rural residence is a choice indicates that rural people worked 307 hours more than urban people, all else being equal. IMPACT OF SHELTERBELTS ON GROUNDNUT PRODUCTION IN THERILANDS: A DECOMPOSITION ANALYSIS. AgEcon
Narayanan, V. Venkat; Maynard, Leigh J..
In areas characterized by wind erosion and shifting sand dunes, shelterbelts can increase crop yields. Groundnut yields in southern India increased with the introduction and maturation of shelterbelts. Decomposition analysis attributed most of the yield increases to the shelterbelts themselves, with a small portion attributed to input use changes. While shelterbelt cost data are scarce, the estimated value of inputs saved due to shelterbelts suggested a net benefit stream that is initially negative but increasing into the indefinite future. Public investments in shelterbelts may be the most effective means of preventing land degradation.

HOW AN ONLINE COURSE COMPARES AgEcon
Wachenheim, Cheryl J..
Student satisfaction with and performance in an on-line agrisales course is compared with that of students enrolled in a simultaneously-taught classroom course. Assessment tools are developed for both sections. Online and classroom students were equally satisfied with the course and the instructor using most measures, but had different motivators for course enrollment. Overall student performance did not differ, but the composition of such was unique for each group. Results suggest instructors be well prepared to handle unique learner situations prior to marketing an online course.

The Doha Agricultural Market Access Negotiations: Remaining Conceptual, Practical, and Technical Issues AgEcon
Wainio, John; Podbury, Troy.
Before the World Trade Organization’'s (WTO) Doha round of multilateral trade negotiations can be concluded negotiators will need to agree on a host of market access issues, including the size of tariff cuts, a methodology for opening tariff quotas in the case of products exempted from applying full tariff cuts, and the amount of flexibility to be provided under special and differential treatment for developing countries. Each of these issues harbours a number of complex problems that will have to be addressed. How these are resolved could have significant impacts on the actual level of market access created by the final agreement. This paper analyses the extensive inventory of outstanding issues yet to be resolved if an effective outcome is to be reached.

ON THE OPTIMAL IMPLEMENTATION OF AGRICULTURAL POLICY REFORMS AgEcon
Femenia, Fabienne; Gohin, Alexandre.
Economic analyses of farm policies generally focus on the long run, steady state impacts while the transition dynamics are often overlooked. In this paper we develop a determinist dynamic computable general equilibrium analysis allowing agents to form imperfect versus pefect expectations. Using an illustrative CAP reform scenario, we simulate an abrupt versus a gradual implementation of this reform. Our results show that if economic agents are able to perfectly anticipate the impacts of the reform, then delaying its implementation is never optimal. On the other hand, if agents gradually learn from market developments, then we find some cases where a gradual implementation of this reform is welfare improving. Such gradual implementation allows minimizing...
