Promoting organic growth through model farms – use of the Leader Approach in Ukraine Organic Eprints
Eisenring, Tobias.
Interesting growth potential starts developing through the presence of few actors that spearhead most commercial activities in a sector. Such actors are very innovative but do not necessarily have all the necessary know-how. The Leader approach has a strong business development focus with the objective to strengthen such pioneers and spread the experience among small- and medium enterprises in order to enter the sector and contribute to growth.

Environmental Policy, Education and Growth: A Reappraisal when Lifetime Is Finite AgEcon
Pautrel, Xavier.
This article demonstrates that when finite lifetime is introduced in a Lucas (1988) growth model, the environmental policy may enhance growth both in the short- and the long-run, while pollution does not influence educational activities, labor supply is not elastic and human capital does not enter the utility function. This is because finite lifetime and the appearance of newborns at each date creates a turnover of generations which disconnects the aggregate consumption growth to the interest rate. We show that the shorter is the horizon, the greater the effect of the environmental policy on growth, because the higher the...

Relationship between Trade Liberalisation, Growth and Balance of Payments in Developing Countries: An Econometric Study AgEcon
Parikh, Ashok.
The objectives of this paper are to study the impact of liberalisation on trade deficits and current accounts of developing countries. It is expected that trade liberalisation would promote economic growth from the supply side by leading to a more efficient use of resources, by encouraging competition, and by increasing the flow of ideas and knowledge across national boundaries. Trade liberalisation could lead to faster import growth than export growth and hence the supply side benefits may be offset by the unsustainable balance of payments position. This study uses panel data of 42 countries (both time-series and cross-section dimension) to estimate the...

Productivity Growth in Indonesian Agriculture, 1961-2000 AgEcon
Fuglie, Keith O..
We use an index number approach to measure total factor productivity (TFP) growth in Indonesian crop and livestock agriculture between 1961-2000. A Tornqvist index is developed to minimize biases that may result from relative price changes in factor and output weights. The results indicate that agricultural TFP growth accelerated in the 1970s but was halted in the late 1990s. Agricultural productivity growth was not limited to rice but also extended to other food and horticultural crops.

TESTS OF MONETARY NEUTRALITY ON FARM OUTPUT AgEcon
Devadoss, Stephen.
According to the monetary neutrality hypothesis, only the unanticipated money supply growth has impacts on real economic variables, and the anticipated money supply growth has no real impacts. The monetary neutrality hypothesis is tested on real farm output. The test procedure involves joint estimation of farm output and the money growth equation. The empirical results show that the anticipated money supply growth does have significant effects on farm output and, thus, do not support the monetary neutrality hypothesis.

Accelerating Growth and Structural Transformation: Ghana’s Options for Reaching Middle-Income Country Status AgEcon
Breisinger, Clemens; Diao, Xinshen; Thurlow, James; Yu, Bingxin; Kolavalli, Shashidhara.
Ghana is an emerging success story in Africa and in a couple of years will become the first African country to achieve the first Millennium Development Goal of halving its national poverty rate. The government of Ghana has therefore extended its development vision and recently declared the goal of reaching middle-income-country (MIC) status by 2015. To analyze possible pathways and implications of achieving MIC status, this paper examines other countries’ experiences on their way to becoming MICs and emphasizes the important role of growth acceleration, export diversification, and economic structural change in the transformation process. The paper further analyzes Ghana’s growth options...

THE IMPACT OF SCENIC AMENITIES ON RURAL EMPLOYMENT GROWTH AgEcon
Henderson, Jason R.; McDaniel, Kendall.
Throughout the 1990s, scenic rural areas have experienced faster employment growth than their counterparts. But, rural employment growth relies on a much broader set of county characteristics than just scenic amenities. Analysis provides insight into the role of scenic amenities in rural employment growth, generally and at the sector level.

SOURCES OF GROWTH AND SUPPLY RESPONSE: A CROSS-COMMODITY ANALYSIS OF CHINA'S GRAIN SECTOR AgEcon
Colby, Hunter; Diao, Xinshen; Somwaru, Agapi.
A growth accounting method is used to analyze the sources of growth in China's rice, wheat, corn and soybeans, the four most important crops in China's grain sector, during 1978-97. A large TFP contribution to growth in grain production is found in the period immediately following China's rural economic reform (1978-85). In recent years the growth rate of TFP falls sharply, contributing less than 20 percent of growth in grain production, as increased use of inputs became the major engine of growth. If the current government policy environment remains...

DERIVING EMPIRICAL DEFINITIONS OF SPATIAL LABOR MARKETS: THE ROLES OF COMPETING VERSUS COMPLEMENTARY GROWTH AgEcon
Khan, Romana; Orazem, Peter F.; Otto, Daniel M..
Rural communities compete with each other for firms, but their residents often commute large distances to work. Consequently, rural communities can benefit from economic growth occurring as much as 50 miles away. Data on county population growth shows that counties benefit from growth one or two counties away.

Income Growth in Developing Countries Can Increase U.S. Agricultural Exports AgEcon
Meade, Birgit Gisela Saager; Muhammad, Andrew; Rada, Nicholas E..
Developing and middle-income countries are becoming increasingly important export markets for high-value agricultural products due to population, urbanization, and income growth. The U.S. agricultural export sector is well placed to meet the increasing demand for high-value food products, such as meat, dairy products, and prepared foods. In many developing countries, agricultural productivity growth is the strongest driver of income growth.

The End of an Era? The Medium- and Long-Term Effects of the Global Crisis on Growth in Low-Income Countries AgEcon
Berg, Andrew; Papageorgiou, Chris; Pattillo, Catherine; Spatafora, Nikola.
This paper investigates the medium- and long-term growth effects of the global financial crises on Low-Income Countries (LICs). Using several methodological approaches, including impulse response function analysis, growth spells techniques and panel regressions, we show that external demand (ED) shocks are not historically associated with sharp declines in output growth. Given existing evidence that LICs were primarily impacted by such a shock in the global financial crisis, our analysis provides some optimism on the chances that LICs will avoid a protracted period of slow growth. However, we also show that there seem to...

THE ROLE OF SMALL BUSINESS IN ECONOMIC GROWTH AND POVERTY ALLEVIATION IN WEST VIRGINIA: AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS AgEcon
Gebremariam, Gebremeskel H.; Gebremedhin, Tesfa G.; Jackson, Randall W..
In OLS and 2SLS regression analysis a positive relationship exists between small business and economic growth. A strong inverse relationship also exists between the incidence of poverty and small business and economic growth. Thus, the empirical result establishes the linkage between small business, economic growth and the incidence of poverty

On Endogenous Growth: The Implications of Environmental Externalities AgEcon
Elbasha, Elamin H.; Roe, Terry L..
This paper uses an endogenous growth model to examine the interaction between trade, economic growth, and the environment. We find that whether trade enhances or retards growth depends on the relation between factor intensities of exportable, importable, and R&D and the relative abundance of the factor R&D uses more intensively. Depending on the intertemporal elasticity of substitution, the long-run rate of economic growth changes with environmental externalities. Concerns about the environment can explain a significant part of cross-country difference in growth rates. For the...

Role of inputs, institutions, and technical innovations in stimulating growth in Chinese agriculture AgEcon
Fan, Shenggen; Pardey, Philip G..
Recent attempts to quantify the sources of growth in Chinese agriculture have attributed an exceptionally large share of this growth to the contemporary institutional and market reforms within China. To analyze this important issue we use a newly constructed panel data set that includes an agricultural research or stock-of-knowledge variable. Our results suggest that while still a significant source of growth, the direct growth promoting consequence of institutional change and market reforms have been overstated by these earlier studies, even during the early stages of reforms that included the rapid introduction of the...

QUALITY IMPROVEMENT AND SUSTAINABLE GROWTH IN JAPANESE AGRICULTURE AgEcon
Oniki, Shunji.
As modern agricultural growth has been attained through increasing use of material input, it is discussed whether agricultural growth can be sustained in the long run within the limit of environmental tolerance. In order to investigate the possibility of growth, this study applies Aghion and Howittfs Schumpeterian growth model, and conducts empirical analyses using rice production panel data from eight regions in Japan for the period 1984 to 1999. Estimation of the translog cost function, which incorporates quality improvement effects, as well as the growth accounting estimation,...
