This work concerns the modeling of the phosphogypsum dispersion emitted by the chemical industries in the gulf of Gabès. The CORMIX model based on the dimensional analysis theory is used for this study. An analysis of the sensitivity of the model parameters was initially made; eight simulations were then carried out to determine the space extent of pollution on the level of the gulf. For each condition of tide, we carried out four simulations, two concerns the high tide and two concerns the low tide. Simulations showed that pollution by phosphogypsum is spread out in space over a surface of about 60 km2.

IODE data flow (National Oceanographic Programmes (NOPs) and Cruise Summary Reports (CSRs)) OceanDocs
Rickards, Lesley.
In the late 1960s IODE started the system of the National Oceanographic Programmes (NOPs) and Cruise Summary Reports (CSRs, formerly ROSCOPs) as a way to share information on planned research cruises as well as to report on the results of research cruises. For many years the NOP information was managed by the IODE Secretariat. However, at IODE-XV (1995) an offer was made by the University of Delaware to take on this task as part of OCEANIC (www.cms.udel.edu). The IODE Committee accepted this kind offer and Oceanic managed the service for well over ten years. At IODE-XVI, IODE decided to cease the mailing of paper copies of NOPs by the Secretariat, requested NODCs to mail NOPs directly to OCEANIC, and recommended that NOP information be made available...

The study of larvae nutritional condition allows to assess the physiologic state that reflects the environmental situation they were exposed to. It represents a useful instrument to determine favourable nursery areas, provides tools for the management of a population subject to fishing and furnishes information to establish appropriate closed areas and periods. The material analyzed derived from three cruises carried out to assess Argentine anchovy Northern stock during the 2003, 2004 and 2006 reproductive peak (SW Atlantic Ocean, Argentine Sea). The objective of this work was to study the nutritional status of Argentine anchovy first feeding larvae caught in the coastal and mid-shelf of the Río de la Plata River maritime front in relation to the...

The coastal zone and oceanic problems of Sub-Saharan Africa OceanDocs
Ibe, A.C..
The coastal zone and oceans surrounding Sub-Saharan Africa, with their vast resources of food, energy, and minerals, not only are composed of various fragile ecosystems, but are scenes of a variety of often conflicting uses. At present, the uncontrolled development of the coastal zone and ocean and the almost haphazard exploitation of their natural resources threaten to turn the promise of economic prosperity into an environmental nightmare that portends great dangers for present and future generations. There is the urgent need to put in place national management policies that address the environmental controls and procedures to be applied in pursuit of economic development. However, the oceans have no physical boundaries corresponding to national...

Land Based Activities and Sources of Pollution to the Marine, Coastal and Associated Fresh Water Ecosystems in the Western Indian Ocean Region OceanDocs
Francis, J.; Mmochi, A.J..
The lack of infrastructure and treatment facilities for the large quantities of domestic sewage generated by expanding coastal urban populations, and an increasing number of visiting tourists, represents the greatest threat to public health, coastal habitats and economic development in each state of the region. Other priorities requiring action include the effects of siltation related to agricultural activity and the dumping of solid domestic waste in the coastal areas leading to the degradation of coastal habitats, with implications for fish stocks and catches. Furthermore, laws and policies regardinng waste disposal and quality of effluents need to be enacted and reinforced Although eutrophication and algal blooms associated with agricultural, industrial...

Economics of Coral Reef Restoration OceanDocs
Spurgeon, J.P.G.; Lindahl, U..
This chapter provides an introduction to the economics of coral reef restoration. A comparison of coral restoration schemes from four countries indicates that costs can vary from some US$ 13,000 per ha to over a hundred million US$ per ha. However, it also reveals that cost estimates in the literature are not readily comparable, and that many cost components of restoration are ignored. Little work has been conducted into the potential benefits of coral restoration. This issue is briefly considered with reference to the case studies. The chapter suggests that a benefit–cost analysis approach should be used more often to help assess the justification for coral reef restoration and to improve the efficiency of any such expenditure. It is clear that a greater...
