Currently an internet- based platform for organic farming research in Germany and Europe is established as part of the German internet portal for organic farming. This portal is financed by the German Ministry of Consumer Protection, Food And Agriculture within the federal scheme for organic agriculture. An important part of the research platform is a database, containing all relevant results and projects. This database was developed by the Danish Research Centre for Organic Agriculture (DARCOF) and should now become a European database with scientific information related to organic agriculture. |

In this chapter, the 2017 data on the organic sector in Europe and the European Union are summarized. In 2017, the development of the organic sector in Europe was characterized by two trends. On the one hand, the market showed a double-digit growth rate again (10.5 percent in Europe; 10.9 percent in the European Union). On the other hand, organic farmland growth continued to be slower than that of the market, but it was considerably faster than in the first years of the previous decade, increasing by 7.9 percent in Europe and 6.4 percent in the European Union. The trend of the market growing at a faster rate than the area has been occurring for several years, showing that production is still not keeping pace with consumer demand. However, the total... |

Organic farming research has been developed over 4 stages: i) Pioneer farmers and scientists, ii) pioneer private research institutes, iii) organic farming chairs at universities and finally iv) organic farming projects and institutes at state research institutions. Today, organic agriculture has become finally accepted within agriculture and food research. The main key players in organic research in Europe are mentioned in the text. Mainly in Europe, public funded research has shifted towards organic farming, whereas the research resources for conventional farming have been cut down considerably. The paper gives an overview of the current status and the future prospects of organic farming research in Europe. |

This report is a product of a partnership funded by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) between the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL), the International Institute of Sustainable Development (IISD) and the International Trade Centre (ITC). It offers a pathway for formalizing the reporting process with a view to making data on sustainable markets more accessible to all; and provides a market data survey on Voluntary Sustainability Standards (VSS). Section one gives an overview of the VSS surveyed with a short description and key data; section two includes the production related data for key global sustainability standards across nine commodity sectors, bananas, cocoa, coffee, cotton, forestry, palm oil, soybeans, cane sugar... |

This deliverable is part work package 4 of the OK-Net Arable Horizon 2020 project, which started on 1 March 2015 and finished on 28 February 2018. The aim of OK-Net Arable is to promote and exchange knowledge among farmers, farm advisers and scientists with the objective to increase productivity and quality in organic arable cropping all over Europe. Within the 3-year project, a knowledge platform was created (farmknowledge.org) to provide access to a wide range of tools and resources, that can help to improve organic production. While, the platform was launched in October 2016, it was platform was continuously improved during the course of the project and tools were added until the end of the project. Setting up the farmknowledge platform was a success.... |

Organic agriculture continues to expand worldwide, despite the economic recession of 2008. This growth is driven by consumer demand in European and North American markets, as well as the potential of organic farming to address resource conservation, food security, and farm income issues in developing countries. Organic systems often build soil organic matter, which sequesters carbon to help mitigate greenhouse gas emissions (Niggli et al., 2007). Increasingly, horticultural crops, especially fruits and vegetables, are being promoted as a critical part of a healthy diet that can help avoid problems such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Not surprising, consumers interested in healthy diets are often also attracted to organic foods (Hartman Group,... |

This paper summarises the main findings and recommendations of the EISFOM project with respect to organic farm level data. At the EU level, the Farm Structure Survey and EU Reg. 2092/91 provide the most detailed data on production structures (crop areas and livestock numbers), and EU and national FADNs are becoming a useful source of financial data, but good quality data on output and prices of specific crop and livestock products are lacking. To improve the situation, more effort is needed on accurate iden-tification of organic holdings and individual crop and livestock products, including the harmonisation of classification systems and improved sample selection. The common nature of problems identified across different existing databases suggests an... |

The global organic market develops dynamically. Organic 3.0 postulates further growth, inclusiveness and rientation towards a more differentiated sustainability products market. At this session, the market information from the IFOAM – Organics International/FiBL statistics book was deepened to reflect about trends and strategic market positioning. |
