Characterization of the physical and chemical parameters of Ubatuba Bay, Northern Coast of São Paulo State, Brazil BJB
MANTELATTO,F. L. M.; FRANSOZO,A..
The objective of the present study is to characterize the physical and chemical environmental parameters of Ubatuba Bay (SP), as a subsidy for studies of the composition and distribution of benthic crustaceans which live on the non-consolidated sublittoral bottom of this area. Depth, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, organic content and granulometric composition of the sediments were measured monthly from September/95 to August/96 in eight subareas of the bay. The bay presents an average depth of 9.3 m and is characterized by the following annual mean values for the hydrologic factors: temperature 23.8 ºC, salinity 33.2‰ and dissolved oxygen 5.11 mg/l. The annual mean for the organic matter content of the bay bottom sediments was 11.8% and most...

Electrofishing as a sampling technique for coastal stream fish populations and communities in the Southeast of Brazil BJB
MAZZONI,R.; FENERICH-VERANI,N.; CARAMASCHI,E. P..
Electrofishing adequacy was tested as a technique to obtain quantitative data of coastal stream fish populations and communities in the Southeast of Brazil. Seven field trips, between July/94 and July/95, were done in 5 localities of the Ubatiba fluvial system (Maricá, RJ). Seventeen species, among the 22 collected, had their numbers estimated through the Zipping method, the model used to test the sampling methodology. At each field trip, three removals with electrofishing were done in each locality and, according to the number of obtained species at each locality/field trip, we analysed 315 cases. Nineteen cases, among 315, showed failure condition. Estimates were significant (p < 0.01) in 96% of the studied cases. Non-significant cases were obtained...

Loss of weight and concentration of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus during decomposition of Eichhornia azurea in the floodplain of the upper Paraná river, Brazil BJB
PAGIORO,T. A.; THOMAZ,S. M..
Leaf packs of the aquatic macrophyte Eichhornia azurea were used to experimentally evaluate changes in mass, carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus concentrations, and C:N ratios during initial stages of decomposition in two different environments, the Paraná River and Garças Lake. Analysis of weight loss showed relatively slow decomposition rates in both environments (0.0047 d-1 and 0.0048 d-1 respectively). Over a 45-day period we observed significant changes (p < 0.05) in concentrations of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus, but only carbon differed between the environments (F = 10.479; p = 0.03). Therefore we concluded that detritus behaved similarly during decomposition, since intrinsic characteristics of the environments affected only the carbon...

Morphological changes in the vaginal epithelium during the oestrous cycle of Calomys callosus (Rodentia, Cricetidae) BJB
RODRIGUES,JEAN FÁBIO TORRES; FERRO,ELOISA AMÁLIA VIEIRA.
This study describes changes in the pattern of microridges, keratinization, desquamation, secretion, leukocyte infiltration as well as the increasing number of mitotic cells in the vaginal epithelium of Calomys callosus during the oestrous cycle. In proestrus, the epithelium is squamous and stratified with a fine layer of keratin and it is overlain by secretory prismatic cells. In oestrous, the epithelium is squamous, stratified and keratinized. In metoestrus, the epithelium is squamous and stratified with loss of the keratin layer. A leukocyte infiltration, extending from the base to the surface of the epithelial layer is also present. At the end of this phase, the surface cells start to become PAS-positive. In dioestrus, the epithelium is stratified. The...

Comparative analysis of cranial suture complexity in the genus Caiman (Crocodylia, alligatoridae) BJB
MONTEIRO,L. R.; LESSA,L. G..
The variation in degrees of interdigitation (complexity) in cranial sutures among species of Caiman in different skull regions was studied by fractal analysis. Our findings show that there is a small species effect in the fractal dimension of cranial sutures, but most variation is accounted for by regional differentiation within the skull. There is also a significant interaction between species and cranial regions. The braincase sutures show higher fractal dimension than the facial skull sutures for all three species. The fractal dimension of nasal-maxilla suture is larger in Caiman latirostris than in the other species. The braincase sutures show higher fractal dimensions in C. sclerops than in the other species. The results suggest that different regions...

Comparative study of the zooplankton composition of six lacustrine ecosystems in Central Brazil during the dry season BJB
STARLING,F. L. do R. M..
Zooplankton community from six lacustrine ecosystems located in Federal District (Central Brazil) was studied based on samples collected during the dry season (July to September). A total of 71 taxa were recorded: 44 rotifers, 17 cladocerans and 10 copepods. The highest number of zooplankton species was recorded in oligotrophic Bonita Pond (32 species) and the lowest number in hypertrophic waste stabilisation ponds (7 species). This tendency of decreasing the diversity with increasing trophic level was consistent with a cluster analysis of the samples based on Sorensen index of similarity. From the overall similarity dendrogram, two groups of ecosystems were distinguished: one containing the natural ponds Bonita and Formosa and the other comprising the...

Morphometrical aspects of adults of Gratiana spadicea (Klug) Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae) from Southern Uruguay BJB
PONCE DE LEÓN,R.; FAILLA,G.; MORELLI,E..
Morphometrical data of pronotum, elytra, and total length of adult males and females of a Gratiana spadicea population from southern Uruguay are given. Descriptions and illustrations of aedeagus and spermatheca are provided for the first time. Females were significatively larger than males in total length. The coefficient of variation of the aedeagus measures ranged from 3.7% to 7.7%, and those of the spermatheca from 4.1% to 11.2%. The best value for the coefficient of determination was obtained for the reciprocal regression (1/Y = a + bX) of the total length of the aedeagus versus the length from the apex to the basal region of the median lobe.

Ultrastructure of ovarian follicular epithelium of the Amazonian fish Pseudotylosurus microps (Teleostei: Belonidae): morphological and histochemical characterization of the intercellular deposits BJB
CRUZ-LANDIM,C.; CRUZ-HÖFLING,M. A..
The present paper reports the presence of great quantities of electrondense intercellular material in the follicular epithelium of P. microps. The material apparently is uptaken from circulation and enter the follicle through the intercellular spaces accumulating in the epithelial median-apical intercellular spaces and in perioocytic space. The accumulation starts in the early growth of the primary oocyte and proceed until vitellogenesis. The possible chemical nature and function of the deposits are discussed.
